On one of my dining adventures to Bugabook Creek Steakhouse, I was glutened. I've had conflicting answers from Bugaboo Steakhouse Corporate, the various head cooks, and the various managers about whether or not the marinades and spices at Bugaboo Creek are GF or not. In any case, I had one meal there which I would have sworn was GF. I could detect no marinade, spice or anything. The cook said it was a clean pan. There should have been no cause for glutening. And yet, I was glutened. Perhaps I got a piece from a recently grain-fed cow? I have no idea. But it sure is a curious possibility and would explain why I was so sick and yet no one could offer an explanation as to why I would have become sick. I now tend to stick to chicken and seafood in restaurants. And I rarely eat beef at home. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the heads-up. Guest guest
That’s fascinating…I’m so glad that someone with cattle raising experience brought this up! I have tried to buy only naturally-fed meat sources since going gf just for the sake of giving my body the purest foods that are therefore easier to digest. But here’s the important question. Do you sell your nearly-organic beef to fellow celiacs and where are you??? J Laurie lbilyeu@... From: SillyYaks [mailto:SillyYaks ] On Behalf Of javamammmma Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2006 12:29 AM To: SillyYaks Subject: Has anyone ever experienced gluten related intolerance to meat? My family recently experienced a strange phenomena. I wanted to share it with the members to see if anyone else had a similar symptoms. Several of my husbands family members are Celiac and casein intolerant. We raise (nearly) organic beef cattle. My mother in law is also Multiple Chemical sensitive. Therefore, we don't use any chemicals near or on our farm. To clarify this picture, we eat as pure foods as we can grow or raise. My mother in law is VERY sensitive, much more than my husband. The year before last was a BAD corn year. My husband finished off our beef cattle with a higher quanity of grains than corn because of it. Later that year, my mother in law had a beef butchered and became sick with gluten symptoms every time she ate the beef. ??? We began to make the connection but found it strange that the feed could affect the meat like this... So, I calle da scientist I know from Canada and he told me i t is POSSIBLE for the meat to remain " contaminated " if they fed grain shortly before slaughter. So, we fed one cow nothing but hay and corn for 2 months and my mother in law never got sick from the beef again. Since we learned this, we always finsh raising our cows GLUTEN free for our use with very good results. I have met a young mother of 2 little girls who also had symtptoms of Glutten when eating store bought beef. With ours, they are symptom free. Anyone else have a similat experience?? Thanks Tammy
Guest guest
I certainly know the feeling. I cannot digest pork at all (not sure why) and have difficulty with " supermarket meats " where I always immediatly get sick from eating it. I found a source for organic meat locally (costly, but I don't eat meat every day) and have not had aproblem since. I avoid restaurant meat (except GF menue ones where I don't seem to have a problem). Your quite lucky to have your cattle....care to share? in South Florida > > My family recently experienced a strange phenomena. Guest guest
I never had any kind of gluten reaction from eating meat as a child, although it seemed that I had some kind of Turkey intolerance. No matter how " gluten free " the turkey was supposed to be, I still had a bad reaction. Weird, huh? So we had cornish game hens every thanksgiving. I haven't eaten meat for about 10 years though for personal reasons, so for all I know they're basting the meat with gluten before they pack it now. My son has a hard time digesting most meat, and even just the smell of turkey makes him retch, but as his problems with meat are different from his gluten reactions, I hadn't made a connection. I'm not sure there is a connection for him, but I will certainly start looking into his meat reactions more closely in the future. Guest guest
I was hoping this information might shed some light on this problem for others. I intend to get this theory tested at a university. Thank you for your reply. Tammy > > > > ...
