Our daughter Lexi who will be 2 next month was casted in August. She underwent general anesthesia, which is with intubation. You would have to talk with Dr. D'Astous of course about your son and his vocal cord situation. I think there is a child who is older on the board who was casted without anesthesia. I am only guessing, but maybe it is an age thing. I know Lexi would have flipped and wigged out in that operating room without it and would have never cooperated! Like I said though.....that is just my guess. Best of Luck!! Guest guest Posted October 18, 2005 Report Share Posted October 18, 2005 I think our daughter was " intubated " without the tubes actually going down her throat--it was a piece that covered her mouth and placed a small tube on her tongue leading back, but not actually in her throat? Ask for a anesthesiologist consult as I am sure they can come up with a safe sedation. Her first and only intubation took almost an HOUR. While they were able to maintain her airway they did need a fiber optic scope in the end. I got a copy of all her medical records and sent them to Salt Lake. I have spoken to the Drs there MANY MANY times now over what they will do. They said she DOES have to be intubated, PERIOD. There is no way around it (tho I have tried a million different suggestions) We will have the normal ppl in the room, but they are also calling in an ENT to be there during the procedure. We actually have scheduled her first casting around the ENTs schedule. We will be traveling to Salt Lake Nov 28th. Good luck to you in finding a solution. We will just have to wait and see how the casting goes. We may have to simply put our daughter in TLSO and wait until she grows enough for surgery. She is currently 26 months and 18.6 lbs. She is wearing 9 or 12 month clothes. So while she is older she hasn't had any huge grown spurts normal children have. I have some pictures of them doing it, but they look scarier that what it actually was. He fussed for a few moments and then was given his nuk, once he had that he could have cared less about what was going on. He wasn't extremely happy about it, but it only took 10 minutes and as soon as they lifted the plaster from his head he stopped fussing. It really wasn't that bad...he actually fusses more during immunizations at well visits. It will be over with before you know it. He is on his fourth day with the band and is doing great. My son wasn't interested in taking a paci or bottle during the procedure, but I'm sure it helps with some little ones. I think it was harder for him because he's older and didn't like being held down. He screamed the entire time - from the time they put the stocking over his head until they had removed the entire thing. He wanted a bottle, but as soon as they put the stocking over his head he wanted nothing to do with it. The screaming was really no worse than the screaming fits that he has during some diaper changes, it's just that diaper changes are only two minutes and this was ten. So for us it was pretty awful, but he did recover fairly quickly.
