Guest guest
Hi , Can you tell if his cry is pain or just mad? I noticed with Ava she would wake in the night with her casts on with the first doc due to pain she would cry so hard then pass out from pain. It was horrible! Then we switched docs and she would wake once or twice but she had an angry cry and would drift back of to sleep. It was as if she was just expressing her dislike to them. I know when we see Dr. Ponseti he will recast her and I wonder if she will react diffrently due to be older and just getting use to the DBB and having the casts put back on. Guest guest
Hi , 's sleep became more disturbed when she started the casting again too. Since her tenotomy, it's been REALLY bad. I finally had her weaned from nursing in th middle of the night but now we are back to nursing 2-3 times every night because I can't listen to her crying either Uggh, the mommy guilt! I am excited to get her cast off on Monday but am also VERY worried about how she will readjust to the DBB. Don't think I was much help but I wanted to empathize! Guest guest
, Sometimes I fold up a baby blanket or put a thin pillow under Collin's cast while he sleeps I think the elevation seems to make him more comfortable. I hope this helps a little. Michele Collin 8-24-
Guest guest
Your son has the same birthday as my daughter. I can't believe how fast she is growing. Anyway…are you putting a blanket or rolled towel under his knees? Sometimes that helps. I would let him cry for 5 minutes then go in and console him. The next time he gets up let him cry for 7 minutes ect. How many times a night is he waking up? DD has never been a great sleeper and sleeps from 9-6 but gets up a couple of times in between. When she gets up before 6 I let her cry a few minutes then get up and giver her a pacifier. Does he take a pacifier? You could also try to just give water in the bottle so you don't start any bad habits of needing the formula in the night for when the cast come back off. HTH. Guest guest
Ive been meaning to ask a somewhat related question to the group. Was Christian given any type of pain reliever for casting? We were giving Tylenol w/ Codeine for Elijah to be given one hour before casting if needed. He's 5 months old and has never really slept thru the night. A normal night starts w/ him taking a power nap at 7PM, then hes up for a couple hours, screams til midnight or 1AM. Then hes up at 0300, 0500, 0700 and between 0900 and 1000. Its not been until the last four nights that we've gotten any sleep at all and I only managed to sleep then b/c Ive given him his pain meds before bed. Its the first time in over 7 months that Ive gotten 6 hours of straight sleep. As you can see, I have no advice to offer (outside of giving him a pain reliever to help w/ discomfort) b/c we're dealing w/ a similiar issue. How many parents have been given a Rx pain reliever for their children for pain management? Lori and Elijah 3.26.04 RCF (Plantaris) Serial casting, surgery tomorrow. > Christian was a great sleeper until three weeks ago when he started waking > up 2 times a night (which by the way is when he started being casted again)! > I know he isn't hungry because he takes a sip of formula and drifts back to > sleep in moments. Guest guest
forgot to mention in my last post.... Ive tried letting him cry it out and it works during the day for nap times. However, at night, I swear he could cry for 3 hours and still have enough wind for the rest of the night. Lori and Elijah 3.26.04 RCF (plantaris) serial casting pending surgery tomorrow. Guest guest
Lori, Tylenol w/ codiene is a pretty strong pain reliever. We never gave any medication (nor did she need any) for the casting sessions. They weren't painful at all and she was never fussy. The only time we gave her pain medication was for the tenotomy procedure, and then we just gave her 2 doses of regular infant tylenol, one before and one after the procedure as a precautionary measure. I don't remember her being particularly fussy after that procedure either. Does your doctor prescribe Tylenol w/ codiene for all her clubfoot patients or just for Elijah? Just my 2 cents, but it seems a little strong. But then, I'm not sure what kind of manipulations she's using at each casting session for him either-perhaps it's causing more discomfort than the traditional Ponseti method techniques. Best wishes for a successful surgery tomorrow. Please keep us posted. & (3-16-00)

Guest guest
it sounds like maybe there is too much manipulation. I wouldn't recommend giving that strong of a drug either, it sounds way too strong for a little one. If the casting is done correctly it shouldn't hurt that much to begin with. Guest guest
Well, here's the thing, I am not sure if it is his cast. He sleeps great for naps and in the morning he wakes up singing. Tonight I will try and put a blanket under his knees to elevate them. When he wakes up, I will give him water and I am not going to run in when he starts crying. We'll see where that gets me. My son can't stay up past 7pm and then he's out until about 1 or 2. After that he'll get up at 4:30 or 5:00 and then I can get him to sleep again until 6:30. I was under the impression that the manipulation and casting were painless but now I am wondering. I thought that his discomfort was deriving from the inability to move about freely, flex his foot and/or lift that heavy cast. I could be VERY wrong. Guest guest
As for lack of sleep and a screaming baby all night all I know to say is that for the first 4 months of Everett's life all he did was scream. All day. Every day. No matter what. There was a 2 week stretch where I never saw my own bed, no lie. I'd be up on the sofa with him all night, walking the floors, whatever, night after bloody night after bloody night my God it was the worst time of my life and my dh would find me asleep in some of the weirdest positions where I crashed holding on to the baby and there he'd be, still crying and me asleep holding him for a moment. Sometimes if I turned on my breast pump the gentle sound of it's motor would lull him to sleep a while, other times the swing worked, but mostly he didn't sleep, he screamed until we all cried with him. We went to doctors for him, " what is wrong? " and they'd tell us, " he's a baby " ......... He turns a year old in a few days, and it seems like he cannot be a year old. Basically we lost those first 4 months, we didn't get a baby until he was 4 months old if that makes sense. He still wakes up a lot at night, but it's nothing like it used to be. s. All day. He still wakes up a lot at night, but it's nothing like it used to be. s. Re: Sleeping with the cast Lori, Tylenol w/ codiene is a pretty strong pain reliever. Guest guest
We never had pain issues with Dr Ponseti casts but lots of pain issues with non-ponseti method casting. s. Re: Re: Sleeping with the cast it sounds like maybe there is too much manipulation. I wouldn't recommend giving that strong of a drug either, it sounds way too strong for a little one. If the casting is done correctly it shouldn't hurt that much to begin with. Sorry you guys are having such a hard time, hopefully it will get better soon! I am excited to get her cast off on Monday but am also VERY worried about how she will readjust to the DBB. Don't think I was much help but I wanted to empathize!
