Come to think of it, I would swap her for a non-responsive, non-interactive, pre-adolescent, stroppy DD1 if you wanted.... Guest guest
Hi all Ruth - Bluewater would take a while to get to. Last week I did a TOUR of shopping places. First I went to Gallaria (Hatfield) and then to Lakeside. I then came home (to Lightwater, Surrey) via Southern part of M25. It took rather a long time... but at least I did manage to get (he'll be 7 on Saturday) a Birthday present. I went to Bluewater last year - I don't expect it's changed much since then. I have to say I prefer Bluewater to Lakeside... or any of the other places that I've been... though the Outlet Centre near Swindon is also quite good if you like Outlet Centres rather than Malls. Guest guest
Well, it all depends on the traffic. The M25 is the quickest method really, but you know what that's like for traffic. I would say that it is a Day trip really. It will take a couple of hours to get there I would expect - and you will want to spend a few hours there - and then a couple of hours back again. I found it was quite easy to travel around in mid afternoon, returning late evening. That's not very practical for most people - but the M25 is so much clearer past 9pm! Nick. Guest guest
>Well - as Bluewater is 'round the M25 it would take longer (and involve the dartford tunnel) From the North side, it's the Bridge crossing... Tunnel is on the way back. At least the cost at the tolls is cheaper than at the Seven Bridge. Seven Bridge is almost up to £5 a car now. Dartford was just over a £1. Nick. Guest guest
Sorry, catching up late after hols. Ruthie, I've only been to Brent Cross once and that was um er over 15 yrs ago, but Bluewater is heaven! The reason? Beautifully laid out; nice ; brilliant cosmetics department in House of Fraser; Jerry's Home Store; SPACE NK!!!!!!!! (cosmetic junkie here...) other cute little shops you often don't find in malls... LK Bennet for shoes.... If they built a hotel there, my sister and I will go for a holiday! THere's a cinema too for bored DHs and DKs and the food outlets are nice. My only complaint is the creche is only for kids older than mine and there wasn't anywhere for tiny toddlers to run riot (really could have done with a soft play area place for under twos). Guest guest
You make it sound heavenly Anneliese; but my problem is that Brent Cross is five mns away and Bluewater is hours away! what would YOU do in the circumstances! If I feel like a change I go to the Harlequin Centre in Watford (horrible, I hate the parking arrangements, makes me feel so claustrophobic, and why should we have to pay for parking at a mall?) or the Galleria in Hatfield which isn't really a mall, more a collection of factory outlets, but it does have TK Maxx and a discount Dressing. Those are both within 20 mns drive of me, Bluewater would take me far longer to get to, wouldn't it? You make it sound more like a day trip, and I don't know whether a shopping mall comes under the heading of suitable destinations for day trips! Ruthie > > Last week I did a TOUR of shopping places. I then came home (to Lightwater, Surrey) Nick me old mate - where have you been! I assume you are busy working rather than chatting to us lot LOL! Weirdly i was going to mention the Galleria as one shopping mall that doesn't work! It was conceived as a 'Quality shopping centre' - you know the sort - full of specialist shops. Anyway it opened with great publicity and was a TOTAL flop - coincided with the recession I suppose - so the shops started to be replaced with outlet shops and eventually becomes an outlet centre... Problem was that the Centre (down the road in Welwyn) was allowed to be built at the same time because it was having proper chain stores - and the Galleria wouldn't be a threat as the original...of course this changed when Galleria became an outlet centre and the Centre suffered - so the HC sued Welwyn hatfield council for something like 50 million pounds - and won!!! So for many years the people of hatfield and welwyn have suffered with terrible services because of the b****y Galleria! ( the council had to pay it all themselves - couldn't claim from the government or anything). I won't go to the shops on principle - although i must admit to using the macdonalds today!!! Dartford was just over a £1. Yes - we discovered this at the weekend - I was scrabbling around at the bottom of my purse to find the 4.60 required! Poor bloke at the tolls had a massive pile of 2ps etc to count out. We went to the Day at the Dean Forest Railway. Oh and visited the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre - now that is a nice centre too. Guest guest
The Galleria - yuck! I don't like it at all. I work at the university right near at (Herts) and have had the misfortune of ending in up the galleria with the aim of shopping...rarely have I had any luck! Now when I go on my occasional lunchbreak shopping sprees I drive to Welwyn which I find nicer ( , most of the chains etc.) Interesting to find out the history Caroline. I've worked there at the university for two and a half years but never knew all this, I guess it is because I commute from North London and so don't know the 'locals'! > Nick me old mate - where have you been! > I assume you are busy working rather than chatting to us lot LOL! > Weirdly i was going to mention the Galleria as one shopping > mall that doesn't work! There is no way on earth you would get me to attempt that car park - it has everything that could possibly go wrong - especially the spiral concrete road to go up the different floors - about as bad as the one in Coventry. or the Galleria in Hatfield which isn't really a mall, more a > collection of factory outlets, but it does have TK Maxx and a discount > Dressing. Guest guest
Like Ruthie, I am in North London, and though I am not right next to BX it is just round the North Circ from me (wood green). BUT - all this talk of Bluewater is making me desperate to visit it! And I'm impressed with it having a Space NK, haven't seen that shop since I had to give up the crowded tube journey with baby & pushchair to Covent Garden. Seems to me a perfectly legitimate destination for a day trip! ---------- > Ruthie, I've only been to Brent Cross once and that was um er over 15 yrs > ago, but Bluewater is heaven! The reason? I am in St Albans - but often in Asda etc - must meet up one day for lunch. DH did his Bsc in Computer Science there many moons ago - i was at Herts College of Art and Design in St Albans - which is now merged into the Uni as well. I must admit to feeling sorry for students who end up at the Uni - it's hardly the same nightlife as Nottingham (where I ended up) is it? Unless you like getting mugged in Hilltop or getting knifed at that pub in the town centre. Dh said the highlight of his nights out in Hatfield was a take away at the Curry House in Old Hatfield. Sad man. Caroline
Guest guest
We never have trouble at the Dartford crossing but maybe that's because we go at less busy (I won't say 'quiet') times, around 11am or noon. Bluewater is definitely worth a visit, much classier than Lakeside! Guest guest
> You've seen my comment on this! > Caroline Yes, noted. And every time I go to the harlequin I wonder why, when I am on that nightmarish concrete spiral, and when I try and remember which of the nightmarish car parks I have left my car in, and where that carpark is, and try to pay for it in a machine which more often than not isnt working... I dont even know why I like TK Maxx tbh. I used to find things in the larger sized ladies wear dept, but now I find it's all horrible and tacky and difficult to sort through. I never find anything in TK Maxx any more. The most successful shopping I do, is in Israel (where I am a frequent visitor adn which has some lovely malls) and my recent trip to NYC which really caters for my type of need. Guest guest
Nick, Ruthie - it takes me 1.5 hrs max to get to Bluewater via A31, A3, M25 (and that was coming home leaving Bluewater at 5.15 pm!!!!) so it shouldn't be more than an hour's drive for Ruthie!
