RE: Eating Out Core Plan

I second Anne -- there is so much hidden fat and sugar in restaurant

cooking that you have to be vigilant. The portions also tend to be

large. If I eat out, I stick to plain grilled fish, baked potato,

steamed veggies or a salad with chicken or grilled ahi tuna on top.

ly, I eat out only if I have to because I can eat much more

exciting food at home :) I almost never eat plain grilled fish at home

because I have so many easy (or not so easy) recipes. Even if I'm

having a baked potato, I jazz up the topping with fresh herbs and

spices.

I thought I'd jump into this conversation about eating out... One of the

things I adore about the WW program and especially about the Flex plan is

that you CAN eat out and lose weight too. I'm living proof of that. Every

single Friday night at our house is Pizza Night, plus we eat out on Saturday

mornings and again Saturday night and sometimes Sunday night too. A while

back I proclaimed " Bette does not cook on weekends " !!! LOL... Anyway, the

beauty of Flex is that losing weight--regularly--can translate to " normal "

life, including eating out.

Helen,

My son, whom I am breastfeeding is allergic to soy and eggs. He had a

reaction several weeks ago. Well I had eaten out at three places that day

(lunch, dinner and an ice cream place). I asked questions, and thought I

had made great choices. Well I didn't. We broke out with his eczema (try

explaining to a 6 month old to not scratch). After calling all three places

I found out my not so innocent steamed vegies in my rice bowl had soy sauce

in it! GRRRR Comes that way to the restaraunt. Just like that innocent

chicken breast isn't. How else to you think they keep it moist? OIL! Same

problem with my lunch at Wahoos Fish Tacos, the vegies are sauted in oil.

Its all over the grill. Unless they didn't use oil on any of their food,

there is no way to avoid it.

Needless to say, one of the best restaraunts I have dealt with is Red Robin.

They are awesome and know exactly what is in their food from their

suppliers. For example we went there with my IL's. I forgot my salad

dressing. I explained my dilema to the waitress, who went and got the

Manager. He made my dressing from scratch!

So if you do eat out, whether on Core or Flex, be careful. I have had to

learn the hard way.

Ann - You're preaching to the converted :) I assume that any restaurant

is going to be cooking food with mysterious ingredients like oil and

sugar because it is the easiest way to make something taste good to

most Americans -- The stuff regarding food allergies is down right

scary although I don't have any.

I think everyone has to find the best path -- for me, 1 cup of Chinese

food just isn't going to do it :) I'm much happier with a normal

portion of grilled fish, a baked potato and steamed veggies -- but

that's why I love Core so much since it basically is just WW finally

coming around to the diet plan I instinctively found 20 years ago :)

If I want Chinese, Thai, Italian, French or Mexican cuisine I can cook

it at home with less fat and calories.

Stroll down the calorie/fat count of the restaurant foods and it's

truly eye opening. Even if you are prepared for it somewhat, it's still

stunning :)

But, what do you eat when you eat out? Is pizza on

the core plan? Or, would that come out of your 35

extra points?

Pizza isn't Core so it would come out of WAP's.

I eat Core food when I eat out and perhaps use a few points for a piece

of bread; some wine or whatever.

Debra,

I'm not sure, but I think you were asking me if pizza is on the core plan.

I'm quite sure it's not on Core....but I do the Flex Plan. What I love

about the Flex Plan is that anything I want is on that plan. But I do

believe the Core plan is good for some people....just not me.

When I eat out, I have Mexican food (small tostada with beans, lettuce and

salsa plus chips and salsa), I sometimes have Chinese food (carefully

measured and counted and journaled--always journaled!!), sometimes

Applebee's wonderful choices plus dessert, sometimes Outback with a grilled

chicken breast, baked potato and salad with my own dressing that I bring

with me. For Pizza Night we order in from a local pizza restaurant and I

always save enough points for two large slices plus a salad and a WW

smoothie. For Saturday breakfasts out we often go to Denny's and I order

one of the following: either a Grand Slam, with Cary's Sugar-Free syrup and

the one egg poached (the other egg I give to my daughter) and I order all

bacon, which I take home and later have on a BLT sandwich.... OR, I order a

" Senior Starter " which is 1 poached egg, a 1/2-cup of applesauce and an

english muffin dry, for which I bring my own whipped cream cheese. So....

is THAT dieting? LOL....no way. It's a lifestyle!!!

Pizza is not on Core, so you would have to use your 35 points. Personally when

I eat out I normally get a grilled chicken salad, even before core. I have also

gone to a Mexican place (Don Pablos, they have nutritional information online)

and eat the Skinny Mom's enchiladas (4 points each) no beans or rice (don't care

for them), 6 chips (these are half tortillas) and salsa (3 1/2 points), and

instead of guacamole I ask for slices of avocado. I have always eaten this when

we go there so I don't feel deprived at all. It is possible to eat out, you

just have to plan.

I actually eat out quite often. Before I go I look on www.dwlz.com and

see if I can find the points for the restaurant. I'll also look to see

if the restaurant has a website so I can get nutrition information. I

also carry my Palm Pilot with me. I've downloaded the restaurant count

pages from the dwlz website so I can check points on the fly.

If I go to someplace not on the list I ask for modifications. I was

nervous at first about that, fearing they'd be unhappy or spit on my

food or call me names or poke me in the eye. So far no eye poking has

occurred. In fact, they've been great about it. I tell them I'm

allergic to oil (I truly cannot have much of it due to my pancreatic

issues), sauces are always on the side. I stick to whole foods as best

I can. If they use oil on the veggies I ask for raw or for a side

salad. I even carry my own dressing. When I go to someplace that has

nonfat dressing packets I ask for an extra (pay for it, of course) and

then just pop it in my purse. Heck, sometimes I'll eat salad without

dressing if there isn't another option (lemon slices are a good one).

I just add pepper and a little salt and it's amazing how good fresh,

raw vegetables can taste.

There are a few places we frequent: Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory,

's, etc. (By frequent, I mean maybe once a month.) I know the

points for those and have favorite meals I eat at each of them.

Cheesecake Factory, for example, will cook anything to order. So I can

have fish tacos with no fat and no sauce, salad instead of rice, and

then split a piece of key lime cheesecake (9 points for half).

I don't avoid restaurants because I know that I'll be going to them

all my life. So instead I save poitns for the weekends and feel free

to use them.

IMO, if you're lifestyle dictates that you eat out a lot (business meeting,

lunches, whatnot) then core would likely be VERY difficult and frustrating for

you to maintain, and likely you would benefit by remaining with a flex plan so

you can adjust your other meals to allow you points for eating out. Not saying

that it COULDN'T be done, but I think you'd have to pay WAY to much attention

and thought to what you would be ordering!! I mean, I know we should be paying

good attention to what we eat and all...but there's a limit! LOL

I don't have any problems eating out on Core. I don't go to fast food

restaurants but I never did.

I get chicken, filet mignon or fish grilled without oil and no sauce,

steamed veggies and a baked potato. I also order a salad with either

grilled chicken or ahi tuna. If I want something that isn't Core --

glass of wine, roll etc., I count the points.
