You know, if you don't think you need it, why get the government involved in

your life? I dont' think club feet babies need anything out of the ordinary

and I wouldn't want a bunch of snoops in my house, kwim? I have bad feelings

about " welfare ladies " .

Early Intervention Anyone?

My caseworker recommended getting in touch with the Early

Intervention persons in my county to see if needs anything.

Has anyone else done this? I know it is free of all costs, but I am

unclear what it is really about. I know basically they come to your

home to look at your childs case to see if they need special

rehabilitaion before they go to school (eventually). Please give me

any feedback if know anything about it.

We live in NJ and AJ had early intervention from age 9 months to

three years and it was a great experience. Here the Early

Intervention services are outsourced. The first visit a caseworker

who is also a nurse came out and took a history. Then a team of

therapists came out to evaluate AJ to see if he qualified for

services. The team included a physical therapist, occupational

therapist, speech therapist and special education teacher. AJ also

has other issues besides his clubfeet so he did qualify for

services. The therapists who came to our home were professional and

dedicated. We cried when AJ transitioned from EI to preschool which

meant we would no loger be seeing them. We still keep in touch with

some of the therapists. For us there was no question AJ needed EI.

I belong to several other boards and most of the kids there received

EI at some point. Very few have had a negative experience. The

object of EI is to give kids who may need some extra help get to the

point where they are on level with their peers and won't need help

when they get to school. What happens in early intervention stays in

early intervention, the records do not follow to the school system

unless you request it. In my opinion, go for it, if doesn't

qualify, then you really haven't lost anything except some time and

you have the peace of mind of knowing everythings OK.

My daughter is in EI, they come in for an eval, to see what she needs, in

Savannahs case she needs a little help with gross motor (she doesnt walk yet)

she scores high in everything else. Her PT comes once a week and stretches her

feet and does exercizes with her to get her to walk and stand. I like it better

than a drs office b./c they use things that we have at home so i can do the

things too.

they do a re-eval every 6 mo. and there is a playgroup kinda thing for kids 18

mo and up.

its something you may want to look into. it may help.

When my son was going through PT (long story), I made up two exercises that my

PT really liked and ended up using at her clinic.

One was my vacuum sweeper's on/off switch was the type you press with your foot.

thought it great fun to stand there pressing that with one foot, then the

other (unplugged of course). It made him stand on one foot and assist in

learning balance.

The other was to strengthen his arches: I used Kix cereal and put it between his

big toe and next toe. He had to wiggle the toes to get it out, thus working the

arch muscles. I can't take complete credit here - years ago in the Air Force

they made my dad pick up marbles with his toes to cure his flat footedness and

as a child I had to do this exercise myself.

Thought I'd share, things you can do at home with imagination.
