Guest guest
There might be a glazed ham that's OK but I can't name it. You need to get a regular ham (it can be spiral cut, just not glazed) and glaze it yourself. Very easy to do. richard --- cph_cdh wrote: > I thought that I read on this board that spiral ham > like Honeybaked is > not gluten free. Guest guest
It seems like all the spiral cut hams are already pre-glazed. Maybe I need to keep looking. Anybody have a good glaze recipe? > > > I thought that I read on this board that spiral ham > > like Honeybaked is > > not gluten free. Guest guest
I just heavily coat my hams with a mixture of corn syrup (or honey, depending on my mood and what I have handy) mixed with ground cloves and garlic powder. I don't measure, I just use whatever seems good. I would estimate that for a 10lb ham I use 2 cups corn syrup with 1 tbsp ground cloves and 1 tbsp garlic powder. Use more or less depending on your personal taste. Trudy in NH > > > > > I thought that I read on this board that spiral ham > > > like Honeybaked is > > > not gluten free. Guest guest
Thanks Trudy. We never had the glazed ham growing up, so I don't know anything about " home made " glazed ham. After you put the glaze on you bake the ham for a while, right? You can see I am really clueless without Honeybaked!! > > > > > > > I thought that I read on this board that spiral ham > > > > like Honeybaked is > > > > not gluten free. Guest guest
I didn't have ham growing up either. It makes me and my dad sick but the rest of my family (mom, brother, husband, kids and step- kids) all love it so I cook it on occasion (big meals where there's lots of food so there's something else for me). Most hams have a cooking guide written on the wrapper that show how long to cook per pound. If it doesn't, I look it up in my Betty Crocker cookbook. If I remember correctly it's 20 minutes per pound at 375, but I'd look it up if I was you. I baste periodically and I'll sometimes throw a can of crushed pineapple on top before cooking as well. I really to a lot of winging-it type cooking. Trudy in NH > > > > > > > > > I thought that I read on this board that spiral ham > > > > > like Honeybaked is > > > > > not gluten free. Guest guest
We have used a few of our own glazes over the years. I've included our favorite 2 recipes. One is just mixing a can of pineapple juice (those small maybe 5 oz cans) and some brown sugar and brush that mixture over top, and baste while cooking. We will sometimes use those canned pineapple slices on the ham too (held on by toothpicks), with this glaze. Another glaze - which is probably our favorite - (tastes good mixed with the sweet potatoes too!) - NOT for the diabetics on the list! 1 cup light syrup (can use dark syrup instead.) 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 3 Tablespoons prepared (yellow) mustard 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger dash ground cloves Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat; stirring constantly. Let boil 5 minutes. Brush on ham every 5-8 minutes during the last 30 minutes of baking. I make another " batch " and put in my mini crock pot (I think it's for dips) to keep it warm for the table. It tends to thicken as it cools. Then, at the table we have " fresh dip " for the ham. Guest guest
Oh Margie! That second recipe sounds delightful! Thanks for the cooking instructions too. I've never baked a ham -- my mom boiled them -- so I guess I'll have to figure out how long a small ham needs to bake. This will be a new tradition for us! > > We have used a few of our own glazes over the years. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice, Trudy. I guess I thought most hams you buy these days are already cooked. Guest guest
I know there are some Kroger and field spiral hams that are not pre-glazed. Some have a glaze packet but the glaze is not on the ham. richard --- cph_cdh wrote: > It seems like all the spiral cut hams are already > pre-glazed. Maybe > I need to keep looking.
