Guest guest
There are others on the board who are more familiar with how Shriner's works -- hopefully they'll post a response soon! Here is the link to the Shriners Hospitals website: http://www.shrinershq.org/hospitals/geninfo.html At the bottom of the page (in yellow), it says, " If you know of a child Shriners Hospitals might be able to help, please call our toll- free patient referral line: In the U.S.: 1-. In Canada: 1- . " Perhaps you could just call them and find out what is involved. I'm just so glad that you are going to give the Ponseti Method a try! Please let us know what Dr. Ponseti says. He should be able to let you know if there are any qualified doctors in Maine. If not, he'll give you a referral to a qualified doctor that he trusts will be able to complete your sons correction. Of course, he is always willing to do the correction himself in Iowa! Have faith and lean on us for support. We're all here to help in any way that we can! Guest guest
Income doesn't matter for Shriners. My husband and I both work, etc....We took our son to the Shriners in Philadelphia however we stopped because they don't use the ponsieti method there. But even though we had good health insurance they never charged us. Certain items were billed through our health insurance such as braces, shoes, etc...but Shriners picked up all deductibles and copays for us. They were very nice and a great place just didn't work out because of the method at that particular one. Guest guest
We go to Shriner's in St. Louis. We live in Ky. It's about a four hour drive. This was the closest Ponseti qualified Dr. to us plus we didn't have to worry about out of network costs, etc. If I remember correctly we received our application through a case worker at the hospital and then I called and spoke to and faxed it directly to the hospital. And called them back to verify they received it. We heard back from them in about 3-4 days. Then we changed our appt to the Ponseti Dr. We originally were not set up with him. I just knew there was one at the hospital and that's why we wanted to go there. I was thinking well if he uses it surely the rest of them do--Ha! I went with my gut and called his nurse spoke with her about it and changed to the Ponseti qualified (Dr. Dobbs). We had to wait like an additional week, but I felt like it was worth it. And it was! They took our insurance information but said it would just be used if they had to refer us to anyone outside the hospital. That's interesting I read in another post where someone's insurance was billed for braces, etc. I wonder if that's different in in different Shriner's hospitals? They said they don't even have a billing dept. I wonder if they try it different ways to see if it's worth all the cost of paying staff to bill, keep up with accts, for the amount of reimbursment they receive? Hmmmm... I just thought that was interesting. Maybe Dr. Ponseti would have an idea if the Dr. at Shriner's would be capable of correcting the feet of a nine month old? I'm so glad your going for the second opinion.....things will be better before you know it! Good luck! Guest guest
Pam, Just wondering about your experience -- we are preparing to meet w/ Dr. Dobbs for the first time, and our son will be treated by him when he is born (due Sept. 30). I know Dobbs practices at both Shriner's and Children's Hospital -- I'm wondering how people get to see him at Shriner's (free) instead of Children's (where you would have to pay all insurance co-pays, etc.). Do you have any idea? Anyone else who has had a similar experience? Thanks, > > There's a Shriner's Hospital in Boston with a qualified (I think) > > Ponseti dr. Guest guest
Jonah is treated at the Northern California Shriner's hospital. Not only do we receive care at no cost, our local Shrine also reimburses our gas(some 600 miles round-trip) and covers our stay at the Mc House. The folks at the hospital are always sweet to Jonah and to our 3 year old. The RMCDH is amazing and we always leave with books and toys they have given the kids(our last trip down I brought along a bunch of toys we never play with and left them there). We have never had to pay for shoes or the bar. The brace shop is very accomodating about just sending us new shoes so we don't have to make another trip. By all means, get in touch with this doctor--and with Dr Ponseti. I'm sure you won't be sorry if you do. Guest guest
Shriners has been a true blessing for us. They don't bill my insurance at all, in fact... I don't think they even know she's got CF. The way it works here is that should some kind of service need to be provided outside of the Shriner's hospital they will pay for any percentages or co-pays or whatever is left over. All services within Shriners are totally free. They didn't even ask us how much we make. The application process was one piece of paper to fill out with generic information and that was it. No waiting, just fill it out and hand it in. They are now my favorite charity... (like I had one before LOL!) Who is this Dr.? Is he/she on Dr. Ponseti's list? I had a post penned to you basically saying the same things everyone else did, but I didn't send it. The girls here did a bang up job helping you already! I'm so glad you decided not to have the surgery yet. Hindsight is always 20/20... we're your spectacles so you won't need hindsight :~} Glad to have you! Guest guest
Do you realize that you are close enough that you could get to Montreal Canada to be treated for free by a Ponseti Dr. there? His name is Dr. Beneroch. He is the first Dr. to treat my daughter Shalom. I have used the Montreal Shriners hospital for 5 and a half years. I met more parents from the United States then who were from Canada. Just because they are in Canada does not mean you will be charged as an outsider to the system. It is still free. Same application process as the others mentioned applies. Personal info on who you are and where you live sort of thing. You need to contact the 1-800 number on their web site. They will refer you to the closest Shriners Temple who will help you. OR you can contact the Montreal Shriners direct and ask for Family Services. Then tell them you want to see Dr. Beneroch as he has been recommended because of his club foot treatment and how do you get an appointment. This route may be more direct as the 1-800 number might sqwauk at being told you want to see a specific Dr who is not as close as the possible " nearest " Shriners Hospital. I think they prefer to be closer if at all possible. If you have any questions about a specific name of a staff there let me know and I'll find it for you. and Shalom onemorebb tristan2@...> wrote: > I just looked up the Shriners Hospital in Boston and > it appears to me that they are a burn only hospital. > They do not have any information about orthopeadics. > I think that Children's hospital is the correct one to > look into. > > Please let me know if you find different information. > I am very interested in what you find out.
