ON the topic of moons...

I worked pretty hard yesterday on my nails. I wet and softened the cuticle area and then “gently” pushed and pushed until I SAW the LIGHT! Ok, well I saw the MOON!

I don’t wear makeup or color my hair or do any “girly stuff” so I am cosmetically retarded but --- I am wondering — could lack of moons ALSO be contributed to poor nail care?

I am guessing that if I were to keep this up I may no longer be moonless..

Any thoughts on this anyone?

I'm cosmetically retarded and I've heard that poor nail care has to do with the moons too. Lack of b vitamins? I think? Which, if you think on it, since we're low on b's because of this thyroid deal we got going on, this could make sense with the moon theory.Spiff ( wranglers and a teeshirt )JustYourTypeDTP wrote: ON the topic of moons...I worked pretty hard yesterday on my nails. Hmmm, I'm not sure about that. From what I read it has more to do with the speed that the nails grow. Apparently your fingernails grow faster on your dominant hand and so if you only have a few moons, you're likely to see them there. My daughter and I only have traces on two fingers of our right hand (interesting) and of course the thumbs. My hubby bites his nails and so they probably grow faster and he has all his moons. The moons are new cells and that's why they're whiter, so if they grow fast enough, you'll see the new growth, and if they don't you won't. That's what I took away from all my reading anyway. It could be like hair, in that if you trim them more often, they may grow a little faster, so in that sense regular nail care might do it. I'll do an experiment. I'll go trim mine now, and then I'll try to remember to trim them once a week by putting it on my calendar and then I'll report back in a month. What the heck, I have way too much time on my hands anyway... Judy

I am wondering — could lack of moons ALSO be contributed to poor nail care?

Warm hands and moons? Could it be that little t3 addition?

~E:)

The warm hands, yes — but the moons took a lot of pushing and softening and my cuticle area is very sore... Did I mention I am stubborn?

I do take a good sublingual b complex and my b12 showed good on my bloodwork.

I also eat “right.”

I am thinking it’s something as “simple” as having the patience to work at the nail area with the softening cream, the pushing back and even cutting away some cuticle..i think some nail places do that for money don’t they?

So let’s say I get my moons to surface that way — does that mean it is just a nail care “problem” then and not b hypo related? I can see my moons now but it did hurt to get there... But I can see they exist...

Judy: Well the theory goes that the circulation and lack of oxygyn actually gets VERY low when hypo. If you are hypo for long...the moons eventually disappear as the circulation decreases. My endo was saying also that big ASS moons mean blown out hyper (sometimes). The question gets to be...once you are moonless...or moon challenged, do you ever get them back? Right now I've got four pale moons...(two big toes and two thumbs). My fingers and hands are still not (with it) in a properly functional way...so I'm guessing things with my fingers will have to get better overall.:) I'll be watching to see what develops. ~E:) Judy P wrote: Yes, we did figure that out, oxygenation and circulation, what we can't figure out is why the heck we don't have any!... I think it has to do with nail care... Cuticles grow OVER the moons. I am loosening mine up now and moons are appearing.

The moons should appear past the cuticle. Cuticles really shouldn't be cut since they are 'gateways' into the body and prevent us from getting different nasty bugs...it's ok to soften and push them back some, but you shouldn't cut them. They're kinda like gaskets and meant to seal up our innards from the outside world.

My understanding and experience is that once you loose your moons, they're gone for good...I don't know if this is true or not. On my wls groups, the main reason people loose 'em is a B-vit deficiency and even after they pulled the levels up the moons stayed gone...

I guess people do things they shouldn't everyday!! ;-)

My info comes from a doc when I had fake nails and almost lost a nail cuz of 'em, and also my cousin who's a licensed beautician...

It makes sense in my mind...the cuticles have to be there for a reason or why would we have them??? They're really easy to push back with an orange stick or rubber piece once they've been soaked and softened...I myself see no need to cut them. I do have some of those scissors, but I just use them to trim the stray bits of dried skin to either side of my nails...
