Guest guest
HI I have a question about the bar in the DBB. Our bar is an adjustable gold bar - basically a FLAT 9 inch long, half inch wide piece of steel or aluminium (not sure which) with notches at each inch marking from 6 to 9. My question is about dorsifexion - shouldn't the bar have a bend in it to dorsiflex the feet? Also, our babe's feet came out of each cast quite chubby and sort of rectangular, I wasn't sure if this is from swelling or the way the foot has grown in casts and if they will change shape during brace wear, also the big toes are quite distinct on the feet, not totally cuddled up to the other toes. I am assuming this is all because the feet have been totally twisted around from their talipes shape to a more practical foot shape. It is very cool having his little feet to play with, I am just asking out of curiosity about talipes baby feet. How do other feet respond to casting and shoes over time? I am pretty sure it says 15 degrees in the Global World Health publication (is that what it's called? I'm confused! Faith just sent a note from Dr. Ponseti that has the link to the PDF in there though). You can bend the bar yourself, use a protractor and a vice to do it. I wouldn't want that bar personally, although you can get the shoes of it easy like the gold non-adjustable bar. The thought of the ends sticking out poking me is scary! I don't get why they don't make a bar like the red Fillauer one with mountings like the gold non-adjustable. It is about STUPID there have been no improvements to the basic DBB/FAB package in so long. >Also, our babe's feet came out of each cast quite chubby and sort of >rectangular, I wasn't >sure if this is from swelling or the way the foot has grown in casts and >if they will change >shape during brace wear, also the big toes are quite distinct on the feet, >not totally >cuddled up to the other toes. The clubfoot is usually more *square* looking than a normal foot. But sometimes a very chubby very square foot needs more attention. Faith actually sent me pictures of Gabe's foot last week and I noticed they didn't look 100% right, and apparently Dr. P. thinks he's got atypical CF. If you want to know if things are good, take pics (standing bearing weight from front and back, dorsiflex the foot as far as you can and take a profile shot to show how far it dorsiflexes, and one of the soles of the feet) and send to Dr. P. Can't hurt! Oh, and there are some pics of atypical CF on the CFPics group photos section. I moved them to the atypical CF folder today. We do need some pics of nicely corrected feet. Anyone got any pics of corrected feet just out of casts for parents to look at? Kori Mama of Kenton 6/98 Merek 3/00 Darbi 3/03 - Rt. Guest guest
thanks Kori, > yup. 10-15 degrees IIRC. I am pretty sure it says 15 degrees Zoran bent the bar the other day after receiving a lovely email from Markell and Jasper seems happier in the DBB (although he is still pretty cross at having to wear anything - we have upped the hours in the brace and the times he has off he wriggles all over - he does wriggle the bar but is generally pretty miserable at the moment - not much sleep for any of us). I know what you mean about the ends sticking out - we wanted the adjustable bar so that we could get the distance right as they only stock the gold bars here and even these they don't seem to have many sizes in stock. We are planning to file off the ends an inch or so so that they don't stick out too much but still allow for adjustments. > If you want to know if things are good, take pics (standing bearing > weight from front and back, dorsiflex the foot as far as you can and take a > profile shot to show how far it dorsiflexes, and one of the soles of the > feet) and send to Dr. P. Can't hurt! I have pics of each cast change but not weight bearing - with try to do that this afternoon - would it be best to make a new album and upload these - what size works well? > > Oh, and there are some pics of atypical CF on the CFPics group photos > section.
