Been there, done that ! The first time I went to WW I was in high school and I

remember -

making skim milk from powder because all that was sold in supernarkets was whole

milk

eating 4 hot dogs for dinner as the 4 ounces of protein

boiling down tomato juice to make sauce since we weren't allowed to have real

sauce

not being allowed to have potatoes, noodles or rice but we could have white

bread !

Mixing Alba choc shake mix with a little water and rice crispies and freezing it

to make " candy bars "

and how about that spaghetti squash LOL !

I also remember when they first allowed us to cook with our fat allowance.

Before that we had to eat it on something or in something.

And when you reached goal you got a gold plated WW pin with a rhinestone for

each 10 lbs that you lost. I still have mine : )

But no matter how the plan changed over the years It always worked.

We've come a long way thank goodness !

If you think it can be hard to stay OP, just imagine what it was

like long ago. I found this site with WW recipe cards from 1974. I

haven't laughed this hard in a long, long time. Anyone who lost

weight having to eat those certainly deserved it!!!

Ah, the good old days! Those recipes took me back to my troubled

youth.

Our Mom was on WW in the 60's and 70's!

It took me 20 years into adulthood to be willing to eat fish of any

kind, but I finally, I like it. But one thing was ruined for me

forever: Liver! How I hated Friday night: Liver night! Why in the

world Mom had to eat the same menu each week, I do not understand, but

at least it was predictable, and you can bet I was looking for friends

to invite me over for dinner on Fridays!

You would not believe the different ways to cook liver; all of them

unpalatable, at least for a child! The " Delicious Liver " recipe was

Mom's favorite..nice name, but it didn't fool me one bit!

My own children are almost grown and out of the house, and I am proud

to say, I've never served them liver.never will! Sorry, Mom!

I remember my sister and I entered a talent contest at elementary school

in the late sixties. We sang an old Dennis the Menace song I remember

like it was yesterday:

I Haaaate liver, warm liver leaves me cold.

I HATE liver, I'll never eat it when I get old.

It's oooky and floppy like custard, and liver tastes UGH, even with

mustard.

So I repeat, I never will eat that " eat up, it's good for you " meat!

It's good to be a grown-up!

call me weird, but I love spaghetti squash (actually, I like all

squash). I heat it with the tiniest bit of low fat marg, a

sprinkiling of cheese and lots of garlic and paprika...

But then again, I love brussel sprouts too. :)

That's really interesting that WW had set menus. My Dad's family wasn't

on WW, but they also had " cow tongue " night and " pea soup " night. Not

to sound too naïve, but was it more popular in the 50s and 60s to have a

specific dinner food for a certain day of the week?

We never did. My Mom cooked whatever she felt like cooking.

WW didn't have required menus but we had to follow a meal plan. We had to have

liver once a week and fish 5 times. We had to have 3 meals a day and specific

types of food for each meal - like 2 oz protein a bread and a veg for lunch and

4oz protien, a bread, a veg for dinner and 2 milks, 3 fats, 4 fruits etc. We

got to choose which foods we would eat to fulfill the requirements for each

meal.

It was TONS more restrictive than it is now. Thinking back I don't know how we

ever stuck with it. It was virtually impossible to eat out on program back then

!

Oh man! That was hilarious! =) Thank goodness I'll never have to

prepare Liver Pate En Masque. It looks like... Well, um... Yeah. =)
