Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Why would anyone want to be responsible for shipping costs when they are giving away a gluten free product? Gee we pay through the nose as it is to buy these products, the least i would expect is that the person wanting accept the item pay for shipping cost. Mimi Melonie Katz wrote: Hello Yaks, I wanted to let everyone know about a new site I have set up to help with our "GlutenFreeStyle Lifestyle!" Everyone has bought some gluten-free goodies that did not meet your taste bud's expectations or turned out to be "not quite what you were looking for." Or, maybe you bought a bunch of stuff on sale and can't use it all before the expiration date, or maybe you bought something by accident, or maybe you have made it through a food jag and your taste buds are currently tired of a particular item. Whatever the case may be, you should try to pass them along to someone else who may like those items. Well, everyone hates to throw out stuff... so I've set up a website through Yahoo groups that will enable us to pass along our gluten-free treasures to someone else. It is called GlutenFreebies™ You can learn more about the site by going to the home page at www.groups.yahoo.com/group/GlutenFreebies I am currently the only member and everyone is welcome to join. over the next few days, I will be posting some GlutenFreebies of my own to offer for the taking. If you're curious as to how this will work, visit the homepage. Once you become a member, you will receive a Welcome Letter than explains the details of how the GlutenFreebies service works. You can request to join if you'd like. Every new member will be moderated until each particular member has an "OFFER". Once you make an offer, you are no longer moderated and are free to use the site within the guidelines. Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 It sounds like an interesting idea to me, and if you don't agree, then you don't have to join. Please don't snap at Melonie, who does many things for all of our benefit, even though she doesn't get anything out of it. Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 I just joined and i think it's a great idea, i'm excited to see if anyone can use the items my son suddenly won't eat that have cost me a fortune, i'd much rather do this than donate to a food pantry for these special items. i've many times been iso products that are not in my area if i extend the branch maybe i'll luck out someday and get a little help along the way. I've considered offering this when we've seen a post with someone who is financially strapped and is having a hard time adjusting to the diet, i didn't do it the last time since the gal got off to a very rough start on the board and she just didn't motivate me to go out of my way for her. Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Mimi, That is how I chose to set it up. You are not required to join that group if you don't like how I set it up. If the reciever has to pay for the items... then you get into exchanges of money, having to set up PayPal accounts (or equivalent), etc. It is set up on the basics of how FreeCycle works... and it is also set up so that if it were to run " perfectly, " then if you pay to ship something to someone else... then someone else will eventually pay to ship items to you. I must also add here... that many of our SillyYak members have taken it upon themselves (especially me) to respond offline to SillyYak members in need and have sent countless GF care packages to others at our own expense.... just to be nice. There are still some of us out there who do like to be nice (at our own expense). Heck, if I read about a gluten-free family in need (or newly diagnosed) online or through the various newspapers around the US, I am very apt to sending that family a care package. It's just something I do and have been doing for several years now.. and I don't expect anything in return. So, for those of you who may be bothered by having to pay for the shipping costs, then joining GlutenFreebies would not be for you. I can pay a little extra to ship something to someone who may be able to use it.... or I can toss it in the trash.... More than likely, I'll opt to send it to someone who may actually want it. Hope this helps explain it a bit more. Melonie > > > Hello Yaks, > > > > I wanted to let everyone know about a new site I have set up to help > > with our " GlutenFreeStyle Lifestyle! Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Melonie, I think it's a wonderful idea! I'm with you on shipping it to someone that can use it verses chucking it, and adding to the landfills!! One question (just out of curiosity) will the poster be able to list locally as the free-cyclers do? Do they have that option? For example ...."Offer: Bob's Red Mill Tapioca Starch for local P.U. in Central FL" this way people closest to them can benefit from those closest to them OR mail it to who ever they want? I really hope this is all making sense? I've learned lately ... just cause it makes sense in "my" brain, doesn't mean it makes sense at all, LOL!! Anyway ... I personally love the idea. I'm not meaning to step on any toes, but was just curious about the "Local" option. Thanks for all you do Melonie! Your groups are AWESOME!! TGIF, Marisol. Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 When I read Melonie's post, I thought, "hmm, I guess if you live in the same area that would work..sort of like Freecycle. But people are all over the place on this site!" Ultimately, wouldn't it be best to take that stuff to your local Celiac chapter meetings? since shipping *could* be quite high? I guess if you don't have a group, that knocks that idea off. I think it is a good option for those that would not mind paying for shipping, if they aren't close to others that are GF. To each his own! Guest guest Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 Lori, LOL, I HAD to laugh! I DID actually throw out most of a bag of Kinnikinnick donuts! I *did not* like them! Of course, that was just months after going GF and I had not aquired a taste for most GF (replacement) foods. I tried some at Wild Oats the other day (they had samples that night) and hmm, they were good! They were the chocolate glazed ones. Oh well, I won't likely be buying them though, as they really aren't good for me! I eat enough other stuff that isn't the 'best' for me~ (who is thinking about making those pop tarts....and some dough to freeze...) Message 3 From: "Lori" buffy5674@... Guest guest Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 , Yeah, it is the same sort of idea as FreeCycle.... but we do all live ALL over. However,a lot of folks on our board do not attend support group meetings, or may not have one close by. We are our own supoprt group here, so I also thought it would build some more comraderie among us. Guest guest Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 It's kind of funny what we find acceptable once we've been without for a while. I don't think it's settling either, some of the substitutes are really good. I think that a lot of the regular foods we ate before may just dampen the appreciation of other, different things. Guest guest Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Margie, Thanks! I appreciate your kind words. I know this idea (GlutenFreebies) isn't for everyone... but for some of our yak members, it may work out well. We'll see how it goes... Nothing is perfect. We may find that it works great, or it may turn out to be a flop.
