Guest guest
My son began wearing his Starband last week. He is older than most babies (he turns 1 in two weeks) who first start a helmet because our pediatrician kept telling us that we should " wait and see if it rounds out " . I am amazed at what a trooper he is being about the whole thing, I was so worried, but emotionally he seems to be adjusting just fine (though I am having a hard time with it). Physically, however, is a different story. He sweats profusely. So much that I have to remove it every few hours to let his head and the band dry. When he wakes up from a nap or in the morning, there are pools of sweat on the sheets. I dress him in just a onesie and it doesn't seem to matter. But my biggest concern is that yesterday he developed a horrendous rash all over his head. At first I thought it was just a heat rash and removed the helmet last night to let his head breathe and hopefully heal. Today the rash was much lighter, but the red spots seem to be turning pimple-like with white puss and everything! And he is going crazy itching his head. I took him to his Helmet doctor (not sure what they are called)and he told me to leave the helmet off until it got better, but that he had never seen a reaction quite like that and suggested I take him to the pediatrician. I am making an appt tomorrow, but has anyone else seen anything like this as a reaction to a helmet?? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you,
Guest guest
some babies are allergic to the starband. there are two types of foam they can use. The hypoallergenic one is called something like alliplast. Ask your ortho if your band is made with that one. Fewer babies seem to be allergic to the DOCband (cranial tech) but I have heard of babies that can't wear that either. Hopefully it isn't an allergy so you can get started again soon. I'm really not sure what it might be. My daughter had minor heat rash, but it was just in a few spots. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > My son began wearing his Starband last week. Guest guest
Sometimes babies can be allergic to the foam in starband... and I have heard of Starband making a new band for free with hypoallergenic foam. Talk to the ortho about that possibility... unless your ped says it is something else. This is my sons 2nd helmet & the first time in weeks we have had any sort of problem Good luck with your son the sweating part does get better. Guest guest
, I am so sorry you and your son are going through this! My daughter experienced the same thing for a couple of months. It was horrible, and I couldn't find anyone who had the same (or similar) experience. Here is my post from four months ago... My seven month old daughter, Gracie, has been in her Hanger helmet for > two months. The first month she had no red marks, and I thought the > process was going to be " smooth sailin' " . For the last month, though, > she has developed a heat rash in various places (mostly the holding > spots) on her head. I am getting pretty discouraged because she was > making alot of progress in the beginning, and I don't want to lose > ground, or give up, because of a rash. Obviously, she is not wearing > the helmet during flare ups (which is most of the time right now). > Hanger is working with us to do whatever can be done. > > I am wondering if anyone else (no matter what type of band) has > experienced severe heat rash. When I say severe, I mean a bubbly, > oozy, itchy, and all around yucky mess (sorry to be so graphic). My > pediatrician said Gracie's head needs to " breathe " more. We have been > using methods to help it heal, but it comes right back. Eventually, the rash did not only attack the holding spots. On two occasions it covered her head. The rash would turn into crusty spots with peeling skin until it healed (usually took about 8 days). My ped suggested a mix of 1% hydrocortizone and Aquaphor (half and half). This seemed to help with the itching, but I am not sure it healed faster. I still use the same solution on her eczema. My kiddo " runs really hot " also. I don't think we ever had wet sheets, but it was winter time. Our answer was the Starlight band by Orthoamerica. There is no padding, and it looks kind of funny because it is clear. Her head stays cooler, though, and it is not such an ordeal to take it off, wipe her head and the helmet, and stick it back on when she is hot(no drying time on the helmet). Our orthotist at Hanger told me she is really happy we perservered and didn't give up on the banding process. This made me feel really good because I know we will see the process through to the end, but it would have been really easy to give up there for a while. Of course you need to talk to your pediatrician and to your orthotist, but I would suggest removing the helmet until his head is completely healed. Try it again, and if he continues to break out, see if you can try the Starlight. I know it is rough, but don't be discouraged. It's going to work out. Guest guest
we had a small heat rash the first week but nothing with puss and pimple looking marks. This sounds more serious. Check with the ped but he may be alergic to the foam. Keep us informed and best of luck. I would keep it off until it is fully gone and try again if it comes back you might have to try a different band or manufacturer. Sorry that that sounds so silly but if the band you are using isnt working a new brand may be better.
