Guest guest
It is definately a matter of choice as to whether or not it's worth the " extra work " (you didn't even mention the chores you may have assigned at the RMH). We still stay there for just one appointment because we stay two nights (at least!). We drive through the night to get there and to get home, so for the one-visit trips we still stay overnight on both sides of the appointment. With a 20+ hour drive on each side it's nice to get a full night's sleep and some extra " down time " and to have a " home away from home " . We make a point of living minimally when there, like making no dishes and all sleeping in the same bed. But, it is sort of a drag when you know you have a long drive ahead of you but first you have to change the sheets, clean the bathtub, vaccum the floor, etc. before you can hit the road. Because we leave in the evening towards the baby's bedtime, it's nice to have stayed at the RMH because most hotels won't let you check out late afternoon/early evening. So far there hasn't been anyone waiting for our room so we feel relaxed about hanging around the RMH on the day we're leaving. If they had people wait-listed I'm sure we'd get out to free up the room. It could also be worth the stay if you were flying in because they provide so many things you can't take on a plane, like bouncy-seats, high chairs, etc. We had a blast carting Devlin around in a little red wagon the last time we were there---that's something we wouldn't have brought with us, even in the car! Another thing that was wonderful when were were there the first two times is we made friends with a mother/daughter combination staying there and they LOVED to watch Devlin. On our first visit, I think Rick and I got to eat a meal--together---with 2 utensils for the first time since the baby was born! We don't have much by the way of babysitting support around here so it was a real treat. But, these types of relationships probably don't form during an overnight visit. So, it has its pros and cons. If we had never stayed for so long the first time (2 weeks) we probably wouldn't feel like it was a " home " and we'd be more comfortable in a hotel. It is a trade-off and a personal decision... Good luck to those bound for Iowa City soon! > Dear All, > > I am planning to visit Dr. Ponseti by next week for karen foot as her > doctor is sure that she doesn't have atypical clubfoot however Dr. > Ponseti is doubting that she might have it. Guest guest
Ditto on the lack of baby sitting support - I have none around here either. The volunteers at the house always loved taking my kid(s) off to play a game or something, the volunteers there are generally college students who really throw their heart in to their work providing games, activities, cookie baking parties, crafts, etc. Like I said, i can't say enough good about the place all in all, and I have no complaints - maybe I'm just lazy and dont want to " clean house " before we head out on a 10 hour drive home. s. Guest guest
Considering the length of your travel, yes I can see the advantages of staying there. It's one of those deals where it's different for everyone, but anyone who hasn't been there before and is thinking about staying wouldn't know about the cleaning your room, etc. stuff that may conflict with their plans. That's all I was trying to point out. s. Guest guest
We've been to Iowa 6 times now and we agree with you. The RMH is a WONDERFUL place to stay and I am so glad it is available, but we've only used it twice. We have driven 5 times from Pennsylvania. The 6th time we flew to Chicago and drove the rest of the way. Most times, we have only been in Iowa City for one night. We got there early evening the night before and had Olivia's appointment in the morning. We usually head for home right after her appointment. The two times we stayed at the RMH, we got in late enough that we didn't get to meet many other parents and there was only a skeleton staff because it was Sunday evening. Paying a little extra to stay at a hotel was just worth it for us. The Red Roof Inn has very nice pool that the kids love to swim in after being cooped up in the car all day. They also have a discounted hospital rate. And I'm not one that enjoys doing housework at home, so it was no treat for me to do it at the RMH. I can definitely see how the RMH would be blessing for extended stays! But for our quick jogs into town we prefer a hotel. Just wanted to let you know that I know where you're coming from!! Jen & Livie (10-18-01 severe left clubfoot) Mc House As nice as the Iowa City RMD house is, I will add this for people who have not stayed t here before, and it's just my two cents worth but here goes: If you are only staying for one night it's almost not worth it. Sure it's only $15 a night, but there is a lot of time involved in the registration, parking permit, key deposit, the tours, getting the speech about the rules of conduct, etc. and if you've driven very far with a child you're probably just ready to flop in a bed and stop vibrating a while instead of going through all that. Then in the morning you have to clean your bathroom, strip you bed, put on the clean sheets, make sure it's all spotless for the next resident, wash any dishes you used for breakfast, tidy your kitchen....... and sometimes that's a lot to manage if you're on your way to an early appt. so you can drive home right after the dr. visit. For us, traveling with two kids we find it easier to spend $40 on a sleep cheap motel that we can just get up and leave from in the morning....no washing or cleaning, the kids have a TV to watch cartoons while we get our showers and load up the car(there's no T V in the RMD house rooms) then we, grab a fast breakfast from Burger King or where ever so there's no kitchen duty...., hit the doctor, then hit the road home. Just something to consider for new people going to Iowa. For longer stays I cannot say enough about the BENEFITS of the RMD house, but for over nighters......we opts to do the less fuss approach to the trip. The extra $45 we spend is worth it for the convienience. s.
Guest guest
Do you have the ph # for the Red Roof Inn handy? I bet the boys would LOVE having a pool to play in the night we roll in. I could call ahead and book us a room for our next appt. on Aug. 20th. If you don' thave it I'll find it, just thought I'd ask. s.
