lyn,

I had my surgery in 1990. They removed 23 nodes during the surgery. I wish I

could answer your question but I can't. Maybe one of the other ladies can. I

will keep you in my prayers.

Chemo first and nodes

I am recovering from my last chemo (AC+T, 6 rounds) and have surgery on

November 27th.

I have a question about the nodes. My nodes were a bit swollen right

before chemo started but not before that. Nothing showed up on the MRI

in the nodes.

How does chemo first affect that removal of the nodes. Can they see if

cancer was there and not now? If so do they remove those or just those

with active cancer?

Thanks

lyn

I just had surgery after 4 rounds AC, and the surgeon did remove

lymph nodes on the side with cancer (3 showed positive on MRI, one

positive at removal). I am under the impression that those of us

who have chemo before surgery have more advanced and/or more

aggressive tumors, so I would guess they would remove the nodes.

But of course, ask your surgeon.

lyn, I spoke to my family doctor about why I would have more

lymph node surgery after chemo. He explained that due to the

question of the number of lymph nodes positive in the sentinel node

biopsy they wanted to check again. They will be able to tell if

there are any dead cancer cells or any still active. This will help

to determine if my radiation will cover a larger area. My

oncologist doesn't take time to talk a lot.

Write down questions you have an ask them each time you go. If I

don't I never remember what I wanted to ask.(Chemo brain...maybe???)

Hi, lyn -

I had chemo first, then surgery (mastectomy and lymph node removal). They

found 15 nodes, with cancer traces in 5 of those.

My surgeon said that after chemo it's harder for them to tell if the traces

are active or dead cancer cells; which is why I then had radiation, more

chemo, and Arimidex - hit any stray nasties with everything we've got, just

to make sure!

I always thought that removing nodes would be like picking pips from a

grape; but my surgeon said no, they needed a microscope to spot them ... so

he removed the whole section of my armpit which would contain nodes, and

sent that lump to the lab.

Good luck on the 27th - you'll be glad once it's over <G>.

Love,

Margery.

I don't think node removal is equivalent to staging.

I believe they try to remove those with active cancer and get the

rest with radiation.

The surgerical goal is to remove as much of the cancer as possible

with the cleanup job to radiation, I believe.
