It is always such a good feeling to know that I am not alone! Kaitlin is almost 5 months old and she does the same thing in regards to waking up through the night. Usually around midnight and then 4 am. She only needs to be comforted/nursed for a moment around midnight, but at 4 am if I don't put her in bed with us and nurse her until she is sound asleep and content, she will scream her head off. It amazes my husband and I, she can nurse constantly from 4-7am. If I pull away from her she will wake up and cry. Sometimes she will suck 3 times in 5 minutes just so I won't try to pull away...I know she is asleep, but only until I try to pull away. I didn't know that it was such a common thing for babies to do that. I just figured that she likes running me out of the bed and the midnight wake up was an attempt to get in bed with me sooner than 4 am. I love to cuddle her, but she runs me out of bed. Usually my head, chest and knees are the only things that fit on the bed. My husband laughs about it and says that " she's just making sure Daddy has enough room, " Personally, I find it uncomfortable to sleep with my butt hanging over the edge of the bed. If there were room enough in our bed for EVERYONE to be comfortable, I'd be more than happy to just leave Owen in our bed for the night...but that is not the case! At the young ages I only stopped for a minute or two, at older ages the session was over once the teeth touched me. I would say " No, no biting. Now you are dones because you bit me " You have to be VERY consistent with this - you have to do it EVERY time so there is no question about what is going on. I'll take an accident, but when it's deliberate I flick him on the forehead and tell him NO! (yes, even little babies can play trick on you deliberately!) He'll ball up and blubber a moment then go back to nursing. I figure I'm only a couple months away from my year-long goal of nursing so I'll stick it out. s. We are getting through it, I have stunned her a bit when she does it, by using a deep voice and she lets go. I know a lot of moms who wean when they start to bite, if they can't get them to stop. I would immediately take him off and tell him " NO BITING " in a very stern voice. He would sometimes cry at my reaction but he got the message. I would let him get back on right away and if he bit again, take him off and repeat the message. Three strikes was my limit....if he did it a third time during one nursing session, I would take him off and put him down and then make him wait at least a half hour. During the night when he wasn't so aware of what he was doing, I would rub teething gel (anbesol/orajel) over his gums and that would usually help also. Daiga > > Yes. I haven't had a lot of time on the computer this week so I'm a little behind on the posts again. I hope the off-topic posts are okay Anyway, for those of you who nursed past 12 months, how did you do it? Maintain your supply that is? I nursed my twins (no formula at all) for almost 13 months but supply was NEVER an issue with them. I was still leaking 2 weeks after weaning! With , I feel (forgive the term) like saggy, baggy elephant already! I just successfully got her to stop nursing in the middle of the night 5 nights ago. I wouldn't have stopped except she was going back to every 2 hours and I was having a hard time functioning during the day on such broken sleep. Now she nurses 4 times during the day regularly but I indulge her whenever she wants it. It just seems like I never have that *full* feeling anymore. Is that just age? I can't remember this stage with my older two...only that they were down to twice a day. I want to go past a year with . Hopefully 18 months. Also, did any of you get pregnant while nursing? I think we are going for #4 (the last one if we do it) and I already have difficulties getting pregnant. Just wondering if anyone has any tips if it's even more difficult while nursing. Kai came along when I was still nursing my then 8 month old DD and right after a gyn told me there was little chance I would get pregnant because my cycles were too screwy. Long term nursing tends to do this I think. Also, you'll letdown when you don't think they're full, as long as you consume enough water. Water is essential for me, and more so during the second or third year of nursing than even at first to maintain supply. I had milk when I was pg with Darbi, and weaned at 11wpg without even a tiny bit of engorgement. It just seems that they're not working because they don't act like post partum breasts with the full feeling and leaking or engorgement. But if you don't dehydrate yourself or limit nursing it'll be there forever. Probably the reason you didn't notice it with your twins was because you were making twice the milk that you are now, and they were your firsts. Night time is the worst for me, she nurses 4 or 5 times during the day and to sleep and sometimes if she has a nursing crisis - meaning she wants to nurse more in the evening I don't have enough to get her to sleep. Or if I don't drink enough water. I have to drink at LEAST the equivalent of 4 8oz glasses of water per day to not be feeling all deflated and her nursing, and nursing, and nursing but not getting enough to let me unlatch. Especially when it's hot, you're chasing 3 kids around, you've got other stresses. My first decided she was through nursing at 8 months. I was not and thought maybe she was just being stubborn and pushing my buttons(takes one to know one) so I pumped for about 2 months and offered her the breast all the time. Anyway, I finally gave in. Jonah, on the other hand, still loves to nurse at 13 months. I do find though that my supply decreases if I am under any kind of stress, if I let my blood sugar get low or if I don't drink enough water. At this point, he doesn't have the patience to nurse and nurse and nurse to help get the supply back up. So I do end up pumping some(I really like the Avent Isis pump) and I have a friend who just adopted a baby who is just tickled to get to give her kid good mama's milk.(It amazes me how creamy this stuff is, all nice and buttery yellow, how come I'm not shedding pounds???) There are herbs said to help too: fenugreek, some specialty teas--ask at a local health-food store. As for getting pregnant while nursing. I believe my mother was nursing at least one of us each time she got pregnant--well, except for me since I came first(of 6). In fact, she knew something was up when one day I started to nurse then spit the milk back out. Allegedly being pregnant changes the taste. She had a very easy time getting pregnant though, didn't have a period for 9 years, would just turn up pregnant as soon as she started ovulating again. I can hardly imagine... LOL! I'm leaning towards staying knocked up for nine years! hahah s. Re: Re: Weaning I'm definitely with Kori on this needing to keep hydrated to keep supply up. Especially when it's hot, you're chasing 3 kids around, you've got other stresses. My first decided she was through nursing at 8 months. I was not and thought maybe she was just being stubborn and pushing my buttons(takes one to know one) so I pumped for about 2 months and offered her the breast all the time. Anyway, I finally gave in. Jonah, on the other hand, still loves to nurse at 13 months. I do find though that my supply decreases if I am under any kind of stress, if I let my blood sugar get low or if I don't drink enough water. At this point, he doesn't have the patience to nurse and nurse and nurse to help get the supply back up. So I do end up pumping some(I really like the Avent Isis pump) and I have a friend who just adopted a baby who is just tickled to get to give her kid good mama's milk.(It amazes me how creamy this stuff is, all nice and buttery yellow, how come I'm not shedding pounds???) There are herbs said to help too: fenugreek, some specialty teas--ask at a local health-food store. As for getting pregnant while nursing. I believe my mother was nursing at least one of us each time she got pregnant--well, except for me since I came first(of 6). In fact, she knew something was up when one day I started to nurse then spit the milk back out. Allegedly being pregnant changes the taste. That is all I drink ever so I know there are some days when my tastebuds get bored and I don't drink enough! What's stress??? Is that the drowning feeling I have from rearrangeing my life to accomodate 's trips to Baltimore? LOL! Definitely stressed the past few weeks. I know we have all been there at one point or another. My date book is starting to look more like an appt book at a doc's office. Between Baltimore, the cardiologist, her regular pediatrician checkups and seeing a geneticist, she has 10 doc appts in the next 6 weeks! My Dh is gone for 8 days straight in August and school starts for my older two (Kindergarten!!) on 8/24. UUGGHHH -- so I am whining a bit, sorry. I have the Avent Pump too and I do like it but am not having much success pumping in between regular nursings. I don't get anything sometimes and hardly ever get a let-down when using it. LOL about your mom. Sounds like heaven to me! Okay well maybe not the 6 kids, don't think I could handle that many!!
