Guest guest
Hi, My son is 10 1/2 months old (BL, DBB 16hr) and he's still in the same shoes. He has been in the DBB since March. I was just curious to know the average time that it takes to get new shoes. His shoes are the Markell boots and they're still in good condition, but his toes are at the end. How do you know when to get new shoes? Thanks Callie
Guest guest
Callie, My son is 6 months and we just got him new shoes last week. He seems so much more comfortable in the new shoes. Guest guest
Ah man, Darbi has fast growing feet and I am never getting a half size up again! Only whole sizes for us from now on. She got some 2's last September. By March I knew she needed new ones but they ordered 2.5's. They took over 2mo to come in (forgot to actually *get* ordered by the brace shop) so by the time they got here her feet were grown to the point where I'd think I needed to get a pair on order for her normally. So a few weeks go by and I ask for new shoes. He ordered a 3 and 3.5 just in case. Well, he gave me the 3's instead of the 3.5's like I asked and I was on the way home before I realized it. So... I went ahead and put them on last week. Ugh! They were ok last week and this week her toe is about 1mm from the edge of the inside sole pad already! I am NOT getting 3.5's. She's getting 4's for sure. I do not like the toes rubbing on the floors when she crawls because it makes her socks dirty on her non-CF because the foot isn't rotated out as far as her CF. So once her toes hit the edge of the inside sole I want new ones. It might be a different story if I had to pay for them - Darbi is treated at Shriners so they're free and they're fine with her getting new ones when her toes reach the edge. It's not like I want to waste their $, they just keep ordering her half sizes up and she can't wear them very long! So whole sizes up for us from now on. Another thing I've done to keep the sock clean is to use a bandaid or piece of moleskin and tape it right over where her non-CF rubs the floor when she crawls and that helps protect the sock. It is said, they don't need new shoes till their toes are over the edge of the last. And theoretically that's right, but that works better for bilateral than it does for unilateral for the above described reasons (toe rubbing floors). I noticed that when you print the PDF from Markell with the sizing chart on it you have to make sure you're printing at 100% or it won't be right. I got one of the printed brochures in the mail recently and when I put her foot on it it tells me she needs 4's and then says to add 1/4 " for growth! ack!! Guest guest
I was told not to let the ball of his foot go over the end of the leather part of the shoe and that the toes can hang out of the shoe. Just don't let the ball of the foot go past the end of the leather. My son is 10 months and he went into his first pair on April 1st and now since the first part of June he went into his second pair. Although he started in a triple zero shoe. Christi and 9-27-03 BCF DBB 12hrs/day callie_13 callie_13@...> wrote: Hi, My son is 10 1/2 months old (BL, DBB 16hr) and he's still in the same shoes. Guest guest
Callie, I don't know if my experience will help, but I'll share it anyway. My son Jakob (now 6 1/2) wore the DBB for 3 1/2 years (he's been out nearly 3 years). We had 5 pairs of the shoes in that time (sizes 00, 1, 4, 6 & 71/2). As for the " average " time that it takes to get new shoes, that varies on how fast the feet grow, how far you went up in sizes from the last pair, etc. Our size 00 lasted from Apr. - Sept. 1998; size 1 from Sept. 1998 - Mar. 1999; size 4 from Mar. 1999 - Feb. 2000; size 6 from Feb. - Dec. 2000; and size 7 1/2 from Dec. 2000 - Sept. 2001 when he finished with the DBB. I hope this helps. callie_13 wrote: > Hi, > My son is 10 1/2 months old (BL, DBB 16hr) and he's still in the same > shoes. He has been in the DBB since March. Guest guest
That just seems crazy to me. Was it an orthotist that told you that? starts getting uncomfortable in his shoes consistently (over the last several pairs of shoes) when the tips of his toes reach the end of the leather. He pulls his feet out of the shoes in the early hours of the morning when this starts happening. I can't imagine having a pair of open toed shoes with the ball of my foot sitting on the edge of it. I wonder what Markell's recommendation is for this? Anybody know? Did tolerate the shoes like that? Guest guest
I honestly think the recommendation has more to do with the insurance companies than anything else. I think they're trying to get as much use out of the shoes as possible so the insurance companies will pay for it and so it won't cost you as much if the insurance won't cover it, or if you don't have insurance. We got another pair of shoes for our son once his feet were big enough to go into the straight last shoes and our insurance denied the charge. We actually have to have the doctor send them a letter stating that he needed them, even if he only needed a larger size! It'll be $71.00 for them if the insurance company still refuses to pay for them. and BCF 03/25/2004 DBB 23/7 Re: how often do you get new shoes > That just seems crazy to me. Guest guest
We were also advised that it was fine to let the toes hang out the end of the shoes. We were told that as soon as he could wrap his toes around the end that he'd need new ones. It seems unbelieveable in retrospect, but Evan only had 3 pairs until he quit wearing them (too early!) at age 2.
