Guest guest
Glad to see you posting more, Kathlean !!!!! I recently had my goal weight ~ I was afraid it would be really low -- but at 5'1" -- he set it at 175 !!!!! I was really SHOCKED !!!!!! After I get there (WHENEVER) I do plan to go a bit lower -- course, gotta get there first !!! Hugs, Randie Weight Goals Melody, Let me see if I'm reading this right. You are thinking of stopping somewhere just under 200? I've read some regarding "get real" weights for people who have been very overweight. I am one of those people and wonder just how low I can reasonably expect to get without killing myself with effort and frustration. Please let me know what your ideas are on this. I haven't had my doctor set my goal yet. We have left it up in the air for now. We all know where the stupid insurance mortality charts say we should be...but give me a break. How realistic are those?Getting under 200 pounds would be such a head rush! Let's go girl! I'll race ya there to be under 200!Naw. Just kidding. Bye! Guest guest
LOL - I set my current goal of 175 with the doctor....HE wanted to set it at 190 (sounded kinda low from someone who used to weigh 135-140)....so I rationalized that if that's what I weighed when I got married (ha! at the ripe young age of 16) then I figured 175 sounded pretty doeable. However, now that I've been in TOPS for a while and have seen all the different weights and sizes - I'll stick to the 175 for now, but I'm open to change it up or down depending on how I look and feel as that goal gets closer LOL......did any of that make any sense?? Guest guest
BTW, I was MUCH older than you were when I got married! I had been 17 for a whole week when I got married - - and I weighed 120 pounds!! Even after I had two kids I only weighed 135 - - - then in 1963 when I started birth control pills (sorry & Eloy), I zoomed up to 180, then gradually climbed over 200 - - and when I joined TOPS in 1978, I was up to 210. From there I lost and gained - and lost and gained - for the next 25 years I went up & down - would get within ten pounds of my goal, and would quit going to my TOPS meetings for one reason or another (working long hours - going to college - - bowling on meeting nights), and I would gain right back up to the 200 mark. When I would hit 200, I'd get panicky and get back on track and lose 20 or so pounds - - then I'd get lax and start gaining again - usually rocking back and forth around the 180# mark - - But in January of 2004 I told myself that I was being totally "foolish" - - (and I'm really sorry they took that word out of the TOPS pledge, because it is soooooooo true), and if I would just lose another 20 pounds to reach goal - and THEN rock back & forth, I could be KOPS and could be proud of myself! So with the help of the South Beach Diet, which is the easiest thing I've ever done - - I reached goal on May 6, and it was such a great feeling to reach goal, be able to buy my size 12 clothes (which was really my goal), to experience the awesome feeling of graduating - - - I can only be sorry that it took me 25 years to get my head on straight and DO IT!!! AND BELIEVE ME, IT IS 99% "IN YOUR HEAD & MINDSET"!!! Well, I didn't intend to preach another TOPS sermon today, but there it is - - - I only wish I could pour some "TOPS DETERMINATION" into EVERYBODY!!! (((HUGS))) Clara Clara as long as I have known you I had no idea you had ever weighed that! When I joined TOPS in the 60's I weighed over 200, on my then 5' 1/2" frame I would have rolled real well. I had always had a weight problem from the time I was 12 or 13. Got it off before 18 then married and had two children close together, went up for the next 15 years then after my third son was born I zoomed to 220. A new TOPS club was formed out at Midkiff, TX I joinned, moved to town and transferred. After several years I had to stop going as my husband and my Mother became ill. They both passed away in the 80"s. Life after that was very busy just surviving and didn't go back to TOPS tell in the 90's, a few years after I had remarried. Was just under 200. Was determined that I was going to be at goal by the time I was 70 made it but due to circumstances beyond my control I lost it in 6 months. Its devistating to work so hard for something and then loose it. Kinda went haywire. I know me better now and know I'm not perfect, I know I can achieve it, what is bothering me is can I keep it. That's where a good support system like this is so important. What Clara said is what makes her a good leader and area captain. She lives and breaths TOPS and always there to help. Guest guest
How did your doctor arrive at your goal weight? Do you know? I've talked to several doctors and they can "only" refer to the standard weight chart. Sigh. Whenever I mention a "get real" weight, they have no clue what that is. Well, I'm thinking 175 sounds pretty good to me too! If it's good enough for you at 5'1" and is good enough for Melody who is taller than I am, it might just be good enough for me, whatever height I am now! LOL.Kathleen In my case my DR. got her palm pilot out and figured it, then told me I should weigh 140 for my height and age, 5' and 75. I argued with her telling her why the other DR I had had set it higher than that, she would not budge. Real upset at her for a bit but got to thinking about it. I had wanted to go there anyway so why not. So I will try for five below goal when ever I get there. Betty
Guest guest
Thanks, Melody. I have really been wrestling with the question of what to do about a weight goal. Go by the standard weight charts or " get real " . Thanks. I think I'll go with the " get real " and not be so frustrated trying to get impossibly thin. I weighed 120 and was 5' 6 " when I married. I won't ever see that again! Neither the weight or height! I've shrunk in height over the years and broadened. I like Clara's idea of fitting into a certain size dress. I look forward to the day I don't have to shop in the plus sizes! Guest guest
While you're pouring in "understanding" into my thick skull, pour in a little mindset about doing exercise, please. I talked to a lady at church Sunday. I overheard the end of their conversation and boldly started asking her questions. We don't know each other. I had heard her say that every morning she gets up, gets dressed and goes walking no matter what. I asked her how she made herself do that. She stammered and stuttered and spluttered for a little while and was unable to say exactly what it is that makes her do it. I N-E-E-D to know that...feel that...do that...faithfully. I'm just not there yet. I agree with Clara. As for exercise, imagine yourself as you want to be, block out what you look like now. As you get into the exercise it gets to be a habit, a very good habit. Life just isn't the same when you don't do it. Most days since the contest started I have added in two more exerciase sessions. Today I haven't had time I just don't feel right. And know that I'm a bit depressed because I didn't. Back to square one tomorrow. Think positive tell yourself I'll get that exercise today and I look like what I imagine I look like. Try it it can't hurt might be just what you need. Keep telling yourself you are at goal weight. Guest guest
Your "flexible" weight goal makes perfect sense to me, Melody! Like I told you, by the time you get to the 200 mark, you'll know more about where you want to set your goal. Guest guest
Kathleen, we must be "twinsies" - - - I was 5'6" and weighed 120# when I got married, too - - - but the last time I was measured at the doctor's office, I was 5'5" - - - so I guess we are both shrinking, huh? My husband kept telling me that I was getting shorter (he is 6'2"), but I didn't believe him! Yep, I think choosing a certain dress size and working toward that takes off some of the pressure of just losing "POUNDS". I have a friend who bought a size 12 pant suit and hung it out where she could see it every day - and now she is even smaller! Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Vernie. I would like to hear more on the subject of setting one goal and sitting there for a while to adjust, then lowering our goal. Would that help our metabolisms adjust? Guest guest
Clara, I totally agree with you about taking out the word " foolish " . That's exactly what I've been. I was in TOPS in the mid 1970's. I still remember the pledge from back then. Over the years I'd repeat it to myself. I kept on gaining, but I remembered the pledge and what it meant to me. I wish they'd put it back in. I didn't think it demeaned anyone. Certainly not me! Now...about this being 99% in our head and mindset. Please tell us more. I am trying to get that into my head and need some help. Maybe you (who has been there, done that) can drill a hole in my head and pour in some understanding?????????? I promise to keep reading the digests to " hear " your answer. Or anyone else that wants to jump in and answer it. While you're pouring in " understanding " into my thick skull, pour in a little mindset about doing exercise, please. Guest guest
Made great sense to me. You are right Melody, you don't want to set it too low. Remember you still have the 7 lbs under you want to go. Love ya Melody Moris wrote: LOL - I set my current goal of 175 with the doctor....HE wanted to set it at 190 (sounded kinda low from someone who used to weigh 135-140)....so I rationalized that if that's what I weighed when I got married (ha! at the ripe young age of 16) then I figured 175 sounded pretty doeable. However, now that I've been in TOPS for a while and have seen all the different weights and sizes - I'll stick to the 175 for now, but I'm open to change it up or down depending on how I look and feel as that goal gets closer LOL......did any of that make any sense?? You are thinking of stopping somewhere just under 200? I've read some regarding "get real" weights for people who have been very overweight. I am one of those people and wonder just how low I can reasonably expect to get without killing myself with effort and frustration. Please let me know what your ideas are on this. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I was never one to exercise on my own. I would always say I was going to get out and walk but, I didn't do it regularily. After I rejoined Tops last April, I started doing stretches, using small hand weights and walking to the end of my driveway, walking was difficult since I weighed close to 300lbs. But! After PeggySue joined our chapter we got aquainted and decided to start walking together. I needed the push and so did she, then W joined us. Now we all look forward to our walk and exercise at the firehouse gym. I don't think I would be exercising as much as I do now if it were not for my 2 buddies. The point of my story is....get yourself an exercise buddy. You can motivate each other. Just get moving girl! Heart, Head and Mind...all go together!!! Hugs, in Fritch -- Re: Weight Goals Clara,I totally agree with you about taking out the word "foolish". That's exactly what I've been. I was in TOPS in the mid 1970's.
