Hi all,

Had a blood test on Monday morning and the doctor phoned me last night to say he is increasing my thyroxine from 100mcg to 200mcg!

What is the maximum of thyroxine a person should take?

I think I must have been pretty low because when I started I was on 50mcg, then he started me on 100mcg around three months ago and all of a sudden I am on 200mcg!

Hopefully I will start to feel much better pretty soon! I am a bit fed up of feeling tired!! And fed up of hoovering then needing to sleep for ages!

: Before a doc goes jacking your med around, it would be in your best interest to get a hard copy of those blood test results. I would NEVER just blindly trust anyone in the medical profession with this disease. That sounds like a rediculous jump, and irresponsible increase that is likely to send you into a world of pain.. There is no maximum...but it is important for you to know that most folks take between 100 and 150 or so, after titrating slowly upward to where they get symptom relief. ~E:) GwraigMel@... wrote: Hi all, Had a blood test on Monday morning and the doctor phoned me last night to say he is increasing my thyroxine from 100mcg to 200mcg! , I took 200mcg Levo at one point but I don't remember the circumstances. Over the years, I ended up back on 100mcg, but I didn't have any problems at either dose. Just make sure you know the signs of getting too much and then call the docs office if there is a problem. They should be on your drug store insert. Doctor's are not especially known for overmedicating, so I'm sure you need it. I've heard of people on 300mcg. It really depends on how much your own thyroid is still working. I hope you feel better soon too... Judy

My 1 cent:

I think doubling T4 is a HECK of a lot as well --- but it could be the numbers warrant it.

Plus I think they go by body weight as well...

I missed the first post, probably a yahoo burp....

a 100 mcg jump is too much.. plain and simple. Your body probably won't react to it at first.. but a few weeks down the road you may be getting symptoms of hyper cuz your body isn't going to be able to handle the jump in T3 as the increase T4 builds and conversion starts increasing. Even if your body will need 200 mcg eventually you really shouldn't increase by more than 25 mcg at a time, should have labs done 4 to 6 weeks later, and then increase again, if needed, by another 25 mcg.

You might be a lucky one that can handle larger jumps... but you still won't know if 200 mcg is the right amount for you.. .and if it's too much... it's weeks of backsliding while you drop the dosage back down to allow your body to use up the excess and readjust.. and then start working up the dosage slowly, as it should have been done in the first place.

As far as how much a person should take... there are several variables involved.

How much gland function you have.

Your total body weight

How well your body is able to break down and absorb synthetic T4

How well you body is able to convert T4 (storage hormone) to T3 (active hormone)

The 'general rule of thumb' is 1 mcg of synthetic T4 per pound of body weight for full replacement dosage... with labs to determine how your body is responding as you adjust meds slowly up to that point. It's important to check the levels of the Frees (T4 and T3) to determine how your body is adjusting to the dosage and increases.

A person who's system is able to easily process the synthetic T4 and is a good converter can do well on a lower dose than a person of a smaller body weight that is not as efficient with the replacement hormone.

How long have you been on the 100 mcg dose?

Did the doc give you your numbers so that you could see what they are?

What is your original diagnosis, the reason that you need replacement hormone?

How are you taking your dose? (how and when you take it, in relation to meals and supplements, affects how well your body is able to break it down to usable form for storage).

I REALLY sucks to have to take things slowly... I've been there, I know.. but it's MUCH MUCH worse to start having problems from increasing by too much at an increase, or to short a period of time between increases and have to go back and start over. I relate it to that little thing about getting farther taking baby steps forward verses taking three giant steps forward and then falling two steps back.... or the tortoise and the hare... the hare got off to a great start and go way out in the lead.. but because he screwed up that slow little tortoise won the race.

Hopefully now...she'll see this

post and feel more inspired to question the doc and get a copy of her bloods so she can better understand the goals of her care. HE could be totally dead-on-balls-correct or just another whackey doc. Lets hope its the former.:) ~E::) It could TOTAL-Thyroidectomy 26 months post-op.

Hello again . You've had a lot of varied opinions about your dose increase and I'm wondering how you feel about it yourself. When I first got my Armour, the NP ordered 2.5 grains as a starting dose. From what I had been reading, it seemed like too much, so I phoned the doc's office and had them give me a smaller starting dose. I'm one who likes to partner with my doctor, so I didn't tell them they were wrong; I just said I was nervous starting at that dose. If you're uncomfortable about the double amount, can you phone them to ask what it was in your labs that warranted such an increase? Before I switched to Armour, I had just gone from 100mcg to 150mcg with no problems at all. They will probably be quite willing to let you take 150mcg for a few weeks before moving up, if that would make you more comfortable. It already sounds like he's given you gentle increases up to now, so I'm curious too about the big jump. Let us know what you decide and what the doc has to say if you talk to him… Judy
