We just got our son's helmet -- how long does it take for him to get used to it?

We just got our 5 month-old son Henry's helmet and are starting to

ease him into it a over the next week. He's only been wearing it a few

hours today and yesterday and I can already tell that he's NOT happy

in it -- he cries/screams a lot and has been a happy baby up until

now. He also has a red mark on his forehead that goes away about 30 -

45 minutes after I take the helmet off.

Is the crying and redness usual? Do they get used to it? If so, how

long does it take? Any advice would be appreciated! It's hard enough

seeing him in a big blue helmet, but watching him cry while he's

wearing it really breaks my heart!

Hi Cressy

Most babies adjust right away to their new band, although, some do

take a bit longer..especially brachy babies sometimes have a harder

time sleeping in their bands.

Does the band seem to fit him ok? They say redness that fades w/i 1

hr of the band being off is ok, so that's good his is fading in that

time span...but it's common to need some fine tuning to new

bands..so I'd encourage you to call his orthotist even Fri morning

to get in to make sure it's fitting ok before the weekend.

Sometimes even the smallest adjustment makes all the diff. in the

world.

Do you have any pics of him in his new band you could post??

Our daughter just got her new DOC Band last Tuesday and she had a few

red spots that did go away within the hour the first couple days.

The good thing is she adjusted to it but we noticed that she started

rubbing her eye and the red spots, even though were still going away,

they were bright red right when we took her helmet off.

To make long story short, we took her two times the first week to

have her DOC band adjusted. After that, she has not rubbed her eye,

bothered with her face and she has no red spots!!!. She has been

very happy and her last adjustment was done on Friday before the

weekend.

poor guy, hope he adjusts soon, sorry tried to pick at his docband at first and was a bit upset first time sleeping in the car but after that he didnt notice. our biggest problem right now is after we take it off he goes to the tub where he SCREAMS, never had one do that

Sorry to say but we have decided to abandon 's helmet. It has been the biggest pain in the bum, quite frankly. If he had been a bit unsettled for the first few days, ok - but he wasn't. He has been upset and agitated everytime we have put it on since 27th July. We have been back several times to get it adjusted. Unfortunately its not a quick trip as we live over 2 hours away from the clinic. So last week we decided enough is enough, and we are making the most of tummy time, bumbo and physio exercises. If he hasn't recovered enough of his head shape, we will just have to live with that and accept that we had at least tried an aggressive therapy.

How red? Henry may need an adjustment. There will be spots where

the pressure spots hold but they shouldn't be red. Our son took

right to the band. He was the same happy baby. I would be certain

that there aren't other factors unrelated to the band (teething,

etc.) Good luck.

I am so sorry to hear that has not taken to the band. I

would definitely make sure you've ruled out other possibilities (ie.

illness, teething, etc.) before getting rid of the band. I just put

this in there for new people reading your post...most babies do

adjust to the band and are the same as they were without the band.

Good luck with aggressive repositioning...how old is ?

Hi Angie and ,

is 5 1/2mos old. The Clinic that we used was called the London

Orthotic Centre http://www.londonorthotics.co.uk/ They do use a

scanner rather than the traditional casting technique. We tried, but

he was miserable, and quite honestly I would rather have him happy

any day of the week. I have 4 children, 7 yr old twins, a 21 month

old and . Both and his sister have a craniofacial syndrome,

which until 's birth we believed was a one off. She has been in

and out of hospital since birth 7 yrs ago, near death several times.

Knowing that will hopefully never have to experience the awful

things his sister has had done, we felt that persevering with a

helmet that was making him miserable was not a memory that we wanted

to cherish from his babyhood.

Thank you ladies for your kind words of support. I must stress that

I do think that helmets work, otherwise we wouldn't have gone down

this road in the first place!!
