I never posted before to any group- but after reading many of the

other posts everyone seems to be caring. My husband is in total

denial and insists that I do not have cancer- the doctor called it

pre-cancerous.I was just diagnoiaed with DCIS-intermediate grade at

the beginning of the month. Surgery is this Monday. The doctors all

said that I am a classic case of early detection- this showed up on a

yearly mamo. The area is on the top right side of my right breast and

so small that two opinions said that all I would need is removal of

the area which would be not much more than a surgical biopsy.

Radiation and medication would be determined from the pathology

reports. After reading the posts- I am now wondering did I make the

right choice for a lumptectomy or should I go for more removal?

Everyone thinks that I am making a mountain out of a moe hill- but I

don't want this thing returning. I am going to tell the doctor to

take out as much as he need to for clean margins- but I am scared of

what is down the road. I can't even tell my parents who are elderly

for fear that it would make them sick- I am an only child, but I am

52. I do have friends for support, but they never had this. I lost

two friends form cancer. There is no history of breast cancer in my

family but I got my period at 10 and still get it monthly (lucky me)

The last time I had surgery was for c-sections. Thanks for letting me

vent.

Hi Eileen,

It sounds like you have made the right decision. After they do the lumpectomy

you will have a lot more information than you do right now. You've taken the

simplest and most conservative step first. If the new information suggests

another course of action, you'll make those decisions then. That is certainly

what I had to do. When I had my lumpectomy and rads I did not know I was BRCA2

positive. When I discovered that I spent several months considering what my next

step should be. Take your time and trust your instincts. You'll do very well.

Regards,

Maya

I had a lumpectomy 10 years ago that was stage 1

and I can remember DCIS means Ductal Carcinoma in situ

(sleeping cancer in Latin) which some people call

stage 0. In any case I can remember wishing the

pathology report said DCIS. In any case I had

the little lumpectomy which was remarkably painless

and went back to work in 1 week. Since it was

stage 1 I needed radiation and chemo and was

lucky enough to tolerate them so well I worked through

them.

I took took tamoxifen for 5 years and had a little

papalomatosis (pre stage 0 and in some cases does

not turn into cancer) on the other side.

This was treated with another little lumpectomy

but no radiation or chemo.

I think you made the right choice.

Hope this helps and welcome to the group.

& Eileen;

There is a book out by a breast cancer husband (I

think his name is Mark Silver) that looks like it might

be pretty good - I don't know if either of your husbands

would be interested, but it's a thought. Mine called

Cancer Treatment Center of America's hotline in the

middle of the night right after I was diagnosed (I was

sound asleep : ) and talked to them. They were

very helpful and have called to check on us several

times since even though I did not seek my

treatments there.

Breast cancer seems to be another of " someone

else's crisis " like car wrecks and lightening strikes

(you just never think it's going to be you until...) Don't

you wish it worked this way with the lottery???

- Jen : )

Stage 1c, Grade 3, ER- HER2+

Lumpectomy, SLNB, Mastectomy

Diagnosed: 7/2006 (1st Mammo)

I had to send this note because I too have a husband who works very

hard but who expects me to handle things like this by myself. My

husband has his own farming business so that means that if he didn't

have to sleep, he would work 24/7. We have been married for six

years. I had a lumpectomy in August and have the second appt. with

the oncologist on Monday.

cancer usually doesnt hurt..then the biopsy came back benign but they

opted to take the lump out and guess what???? invasive ductal

carcinoma yayy for me huh...stage 11 because it was2 cm no lymph node

involvement...I was on a rollercoaster ride and my husband left the

building so to speak (mindwise) He didnt go with me to any of the

appts. or surgeries he threw himself more into his work these past

months ( nothing really new but he is a good man) ive learned to do

things alone...i got the lumpectomy and lymph node removal (sentinel

node and a few more ) margins were clear but not enough so opted to

go back in for reexcision for a bit more and no residual cancer so i

didnt do a maschectomy after getting 3 doctors opinions...my lymph

nodes were negative..after the reexcision i got a terrible infection

but it cleared up...go step by step and see

ITS HARD TO WALK THAT ROAD ALONE - IT HELPS TO HAVE OUR LOVE ONE BY OUR SIDE AS

WE GO THRU THE WAITING AND ANXIETY. TO BE THERE FOR ENCOURAGEMENT. BUT NO MATTER

WHAT - WHEN ITS TIME FOR THE TESTS OR THE OPERATION WE DO WALK IT ALONE HUMANLY

BUT WITH OUR LORD HOLDING OUR HAND. YOU LADIES ARE TRULY STRONG AND I ADMIRE

THAT - I HOPE THAT I CAN BE THAT WAY IF NEED TO.

THE CALL JUST CAME AND IT IS INVASIVE DUCTAL - 1 CENTIMETER HAVE TO HAVE

SURGERY AND HAVE MY LYMPH NODES CHECKED AND CHEST EXRAY I PRAY THAT IT HAS NOT

SPREAD OUTSIDE OF MY BREAST AND THAT NO LYMPH NODES ARE INVOLVED GOSH I AM SO

SCARED

Dee,

I had infiltrating ductal carcinoma with one bad node and its been 16 yr since

my surgery. They have more chemo drugs and combinations plus new antinausea

drugs then they did back in 1990. Hang in there and try not to panic. Take it

day by day or hour by hr if need be. We are all here for you. You are in my

prayers.

Hugs

I don't understand this non-support from some of our husbands. Mine too

threw himself harder into his work and didn't go with me to any

treatments, etc. Is it pure denial? or another one of those things

" mom " is supposed to just take care of herself? Why don't they

understand how frightening this is?

I am so lucky! My husband is more worried about my BC than I am; he looks

after me all the time, and even learned to cook (a bit <G>) and did some of

the washing and ironing, and he has come with me to all of my appointments

except for the daily radiation which I had to tell him were easy and I could

manage on my own.

He has his own health problems, and I do what I can to help with those, but

he has done so much more for me ...

It's another case of " everyone's different " , I suppose, and I got one of the

good ones. <G>.

I'm also one of the lucky ones whose husband is very involved in

everything! I didn't really appreciate it as much as I should have,

I guess - after reading some posts - I guess I should show him some

more appreciation. Won't HE be delighted! (smiles) If it weren't

for menopause, he might " appreciate " the " appreciations " more. Poor

guy - good thing he is patient too.

Hugs to all,

Ellen
