>Hi Tanja,

I am on OxyContin for pain. Also use Vioxx and Amitriptylene each

night. I have been on OC for almost three years now, since it was

approved here, and I am very happy with it. It is a depot type

medication, so you only need to take it twice a day.

Before that I was on a medication from the UK called DHC

(dihydrocodeine), also a 12 hour working med. I had to use a lot of

codeine for breakthrough pain though. Back then I was also on

Tegretol for a while, but had side effects (nausea and projectile

vomiting), so it was discontinued... Before DHC I used different

other pain meds, all of the kind that worked 3-4 hours only. That

does not work well at all when you have chronic pain, that is for

sure. It is as if you are on a pain roller coaster all the time.

When I started OC, I wanted to try not to use anything for

breakthrough pain except Tylenol. Since OC works so much better for

me, I in general have a pain relief I can live with. I am not pain

free, but it is down to a level I can handle most of the time. I do

have some dreadful days though, but as long as they are not too many,

I can handle that.

OxyContin is a type A drug here, meaning that it is in the group of

the strongest narcotics, together with e.g. Ketogan, Morphine,

Fentanyl (Duragesic) etc. It requires a special prescription which

you can't e.g. have faxed to the pharmacy.

There are different opinions on the use of narcotics for chronic

pain. But it is my experience that it really can make a huge

difference in the quality of life and function level. I had never had

a chance to still be working and doing the things I do, if it weren't

for the pain meds. I would e.g. have had huge problems driving a car

and such every day things...

So for me it has made a huge difference... I am very glad that I have

had the opportunity to get these medications, thanks to the pain

clinic. It just makes life so much better. It sort of feels like a

paper that just sucks up the pain...

The only thing I have experienced some of lately, is that it feels

like the med stops working after around 10 hours, not 12. Anybody

experienced that and discussed it with their doc?

>Hi Lana,

If your doc thinks your headaches are either migraines or cluster

headaches, why hasn't he let you try any of the medications used for

such headaches? It is awful to just have to live through bad migraine

attacks. And cluster headaches are even worse, as I understand. I am

totally desperate if I have one of my really bad migraines and can't

control it somehow. I can't imagine not having anything at all to

help with them...

Has your doc ever considered referring you to a neurologist who

specializes in headaches? That might be a good idea...

Hi Aase,

Well, to be fair, I haven't gone back about them. I wanted to go the

next time I had one, but they seem to happen either in the middle of

the night, or while I'm at work. I really do need to talk to him

about them. I should be going back for my yearly dexa scan, so I

plan on talking to him then. I did used to go to a neurologist for

trigeminol neuralgia, but since I had the brain surgery for that, I

haven't seen a neurologist. I will mention it to him. Thanks, kiddo!

Love Lana

Hi Tanja, I will get to that list ASAP. I have a very full weekend. We are

moving everyone in to different bedrooms this weekend, hoping to make Dylan

safer. Painting, cleaning, you know. When do you see your Dr next? If you are

going soon, I'll be sure to get it to you sooner. Cindy C.
