Hi! I'm not sure of everything to expect either. My daughter,

Emma, was just casted twice by Dr. Ponseti. She is in the set she

has now until August 2nd. Then a couple days later she will have

the tendon transfer on her right foot (she is bilateral, but only

needs it on her right foot).

I recently found out from my doctor that they have a new process

they use that will allow the foot to be able to put more support on

it. Which I think is important since at this age, Emma is a walking

maniac with those casts. Her last tendon lengthening, she was

walking on her casts that afternoon! Anyway, they now use a

dissolvable screw rather that the 'button' thing they had before.

It's my understanding (not for sure) that they would have to go back

later and take out that 'button'. Now the tendon will attach itself

better to the bone and the screw, and eventually the screw will

desinigrate. My doctor told me that children who have this will not

have to be off of their feet as long as before.

IF ANYONE HAS HAD THE TRANSFER SURGERY WITH THE SCREW, CAN YOU GIVE

US ADDITIONAL INFORMATION?!

I hope I've helped a bit, but like you, I still have many questions

for the doctor as well! Good luck and keep us posted about the

transfer if you have it!

Hi Theresa,

I think we will be at the synopsism too with our son Collin (he will

be 3 next month) we had spoke with Dr. H about it a while back and

I know we were on the list then. They said September before, but

never said a date, do you know when, I'll have to put in to take off

work.

Michele,

They didn't say what exact date it would be. Only that it would be

on a Saturday in September. What are the reasons for Collin

attending, if you don't mind me asking?

How old is your son and why the operation, did he relapse? My son stayed in

the hospital about 24 hours after he had this operation, then wore casts for six

weeks afterwards.

Back with Questions....

Hi all! It's been quite some time since I've posted here as things

had been uneventful up until this point.

We had our check-up with Dr. Herzenberg last week and he's

considereing doing the tendon transfer on Dylans feet. He wants us

to come to a symposium in September to get some opinions of other

clubfoot docs.

What I was hoping for from all of you was any information you have

about the procedure itself, the recovery and such (how long in

casts, is it outpatient, how much pain, etc). I didn't think to ask

anything at the appointment as I was caught a little off guard and

nothing was definately decided.

Also, will anyone else here be at the symposium in September?

Thanks in advance for any info or guidance you can give me. If you

would prefer to e-mail me off the board my address is

He hasn't necessarily relapsed. His heal and everything in the back

of his foot is fine, but when he walks his forefoot sometimes turns

in. Dr. H said it's because the muscle that goes from his ankle to

his big toe is stronger than the outer foot muscles. It's pulling

his toe in so that he walks on his big toe, the pad below his little

toe and his heel instead of walking on his heel & the pads below his

big and little toe. It's causing some sort of bunion on the joint

of his big toe. Did that make any sense at all? I can't remember

all the technical info he gave us.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping this wouldn't require a hospital

stay since Dylan does so much better with recovery at home. Guess

we'll have to wait and see.

Oh and he's almost 3 1/2. I know this surgery is typically done

around age 2 1/2 but we didn't start with a Ponseti doc until 14

months.

That was my problem, I didn't find Dr. Ponseti until my son was 21 months old

and ruined by another. The surgery did allow him to walk though, and took away

the constant pain he was in prior.
