Angel,

How old is your son? He has suffered many relapses?

If you could refer us to a doctor in North Jersey (Bergen, Passaic, Essex,

Hudson County) or just point me in a direction of where I should call to

locate a doctor that doesn't modify his method we would appreciate it very

much.

I got a preliminary reply from Dr Ponseti today. I have to call him

tomorrow to exchange some more information, and I am still awaiting Dr

Mosca's opinion, but for now it looks like another 1-2 casts for Kai - this

time toe to groin because the forefoot is involved - at 2 week intervals

again. The forefoot is in adduction again for certain, and we will find out

more when we talk to him.

Dr Ponseti wanted us to check the strength in the toe muscles so we did what

he said and, well, it wasnt good. Apparently Kai is not capable of

dorsiflexing his big toe ... I dont know what this means, but I guess we

will find out.

He did say that hte other child who got a blister on the dorsum (top of foot

just in front of ankle) from the shoes also has a foot like Kai's.

His exact words " It occurs only in these short, chubby, difficult to treat

feet "

Thankfully I got over the boohoos last week, now it is just getting ready

for the inevitable. I do look forward to the time that we can go more than

3 months without a relapse though!

My son is 19 months old and this will be the 4th set of casting. The first set

(Jan-Mar '03) of casting was only partially successful because the doctor did

not know/understand the dynamics of atypical clubfoot. That has changed :D and

he is now able to identify and correct it. the second set of casting was done

by Dr Ponseti (Sept-Oct '03) and he finished off the correction that was never

fully attained. The first real relapse happened within 2 months of Dr Ponseti

casting and was due in large to the Markell shoes not being ideal for his kind

of foot. That casting was from Feb - Apr '04 by our doctor in Seattle. This

will be the 2nd relapse and will be casted by the doctor in Seattle. It is not

typical for a clubfoot treated well to relapse that often (or at all, for the

most part).

I could be wrong (my east coast geography is a bit weak) but I think the nearest

list doctors to you are in New York. You can find Dr Ponseti's list here:

http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/physicians.html#N

You can ask the list about the doctors listed there for a firm recommendation.
