Guest guest
You will be tender for awhile I think. I have cream they gave me to put on to numb it before they stick needle in, but never used it but bet it would help numb it so would not hurt so bad while healing. It should be okay in a few days and gradually less tender as time passes. Cheers Jolene

Guest guest
I too have that numbing creme to use when getting stuck with a needle. But it still hurt to have the port accessed. I told the nurse that the numbing creme does not seem to help. She said that it may hurt worse without. You would think they would give me stronger stuff. Of course they are not the ones feeling the sharp sticking pain. Ingrid > You will be tender for awhile I think. Guest guest
When they stick me they just count 1,2,3 and take a deep breath and in it goes. Just a twinge. Never did use the cream, kept forgetting. Course they clean off skin with 3 swabs of betadine so what would be left anyway. The gal who stuck this time got it just right, as this is first time they were able to get blood when they pulled back on needle. Guest guest
I too, used a numbing cream on my port. I had to drive 45 minutes to get to my treatments so I would put on a liberal amount and it would be completely numb by the time I got there. I did find that if I did not really goop it on thick, it would still hurt. Now I make the 45 minute drive to have my port flushed every month since the doctor does not feel that we should remove it yet. I am out of the cream now so I have to endure the pokes without it. I have found that if I use visual imaging and rythmic breathing, it is not as painful. Sharon > > You will be tender for awhile I think. Guest guest
My port is what they call positional(sp?) I have to lay back in the recliner with my arms raised for them to draw back blood. And often set off the alarms in the pumps during chemo when I move around. So, glad that this chemo thing is over with. Guest guest
Sounds like you and I are the lucky ones, Joleene. I harly feel it when the nurse sticks the needle into my port. Same thing when they remove it. I have had problems getting a return, though. For some reason my port has decided to be a one-way street. Sometimes we have a little luck after treatment with CathFlo, an enzyme that's supposed to dissolve the thin tissue sheath around the end of the catheter, but the nurses have even given up using that. There are no issues with my " fickle " port other that all my blood samples have to be taken from my arm even when my port is accessed. All in all, I wouldn't be without my port. It has been a blessing for over 18 months now. -joe- > When they stick me they just count 1,2,3 and take a deep breath and in it > goes. Just a twinge. Never did use the cream, kept forgetting. Guest guest
If they don't get blood from your port it can be a positional thing. My old port was like that sometimes I had to lie completely flat and then put an arm over my head it was tempermental. Nonnie IF THERE ARE NO DOGS OR HORSES IN HEAVEN THEN WHEN I DIE I WANT TO GO WHERE THEY WENT. HOPEFULLY, there IS a RAINBOW BRIDGE!! RE: Restaging/Jay Depends who is taking the blood. When I was in during surgery recouperation they put a line in for different stuff, but whenever gals or guys came from the Lab they said they could not use that line, had to take it from arm and by then it was getting pretty difficult to do as the one's in training just messed up all my veins.Grrr. Jolene Now the Onc nurses can take blood from the Port a Cath but as I said previously it just didn't work until this very last time when other nurse put the needle in to use the cath for chemo and drew back and got blood, Evidently you have to put it in just right. Anyway this time they didn't need to take any actual blood sample. Jolene

Guest guest
Does your insurance pay for the numbing cream or not? Guest guest
I am sure, NOT... the port is killing me now! I was told it would be a few days for pain. Hangin in there! Guest guest
My picc line was also only a one way deal for a solid month but they can give you something and an hour later it will dissolve it. Just keep complaining loud and often. Sometimes everyone would just rather not do anything. The major chemo nurse is the only one who could prescribe it for me. I was really angry that I had this line and still had to be poked all the time. Joan > > When they stick me they just count 1,2,3 and take a deep breath > and in it > > goes. Just a twinge.
