Guest guest
I'm no expert, but I would think that if the foot wasn't rotated out at the 70 degree angle in the last cast, that the heel wouldn't fit properly in the shoes no matter what you do. I've missed your other posts, so I'm not sure which doctor you sought treatment from? Guest guest
Cari, I think that at this point, you should definitely send photos to Dr. Ponseti. If the foot is not fully corrected, he will let you know and most likely would be able to tell you how many additional casts may need in order to obtain full correction. You should probably let 's doctor know also that the heels are not able to be seated in the shoes. Good luck hon! Guest guest
I agree with the others that it would be good to send photos to Dr P. If there are issues that can be fixed with casting then you need to know about it now. having said that, yes, the shoes will work with a foot that is not fully corrected in certain cases. Something about the design allows then to help further correction rather than just maintain it like the Markell shoes do. However, the foot should still be as fully corrected as possible with casting first. Angel Heel not seated in shoe I am sorry to post again; I have so many questions and I have gotten such wonderful feedback from all of you!! I read on this board that if a foot is not fully corrected then the shoes do not work. Yesterday, my husband cut holes in the backs of my son's Markell shoes. We noticed that the heels were not touching the bottoms of the shoes. After several attempts to seat his feet properly, we gave up. It seems that his heels just won't go down. My son hashad two tenotomy operations and his heel is still tight. I have contacted and he is going to make us a pair of shoes. YAY!!! :)However, I am wondering if they will work right now since his foot is not sitting in his current shoe correctly. Any ideas/advice? Thank you! Guest guest
Hello, I am wondering - how did your husband cut the hole? I am thinking that I need to be able to see my son's heel, as his club foot keeps slipping. Thanks. > I am sorry to post again; I have so many questions and I have gotten > such wonderful feedback from all of you!! > > I read on this board that if a foot is not fully corrected then the > shoes do not work. Guest guest
Where are you at? Alot of us have made the trip. It is a very big step to take, but it is more worth it than you can imagine! To make an appointment call Dr Ponseti's # from the website and just make one. We talked directly to his secretary Joyce and had an appointment within 2 weeks - it would have been sooner but we needed the time to get the money for the trip. On the website you will also find information about the Mc house. There is a program - Angel Flights - that will fly you fro free, but there is some issue if it is over 1000 miles ... we flew from Seattle to Cedar Rapids so we had to pay for tickets; but dont just go by the price the airport gives you - I checked at Orbitz, Flightline and a whole bunch of others for cheaper prices. The only problem I found is since you don't know how long the stay is and cant buy round trip tickets is does cost more. I cost us about $240 each way(Seattle to Chicago, Chicago to Cedar Rapids, back the same way), and the local Memorial Foundation (A charity thru the local hospital for sick kids) reimbursed us $200.00 From Cedar Rapids there is an airport shuttle that can take you to Iowa City, I believe, but I actually ran into a retired nurse from the UoI and her husband on the plane who lived in Cedar Rapids who gave us a ride first to the Mc house, and then to the motel we stayed at the first night. Some people fly to another airport that is cheaper to fly to (I dont remember the name) and rent a car to drive into IC. Once in IC you can usually stay at the Mc house for $13 a day (if I remember right) and they have kitchens where you can cook and quite a bit of 'accessory' food making it alot less expensive a trip. They also have a shuttle that makes scheduled trips to the hospital everyday if you need. The Hospital is also within walking distance if you appointment is at a time between shuttles (some of them are a few hours apart). They do not always have an opening right away, so you might have to stay in a motel for a few nights. They can give you a voucher for a hotel but I noticed something: The price at the Motel 6 was less than I paid on the voucher at Holliday Inn. the difference was that the Holliday in had a shuttle that was able to take us to the hospital for our first appointment. Our time in IC was absolutely wonderful, with the only downside being missing my husband and other 2 kids. Dr Ponseti often casts every 5 days, but on some children he goes every 7. We were there a total of 9 days counting the day we flew in and the day we flew out. The total cost for us - and this included about $200 in gifts and the plane tickets - was around $800. If you can use Angel Flights it puts a huge dent in that price. Also, the treatment itself is less expensive than it is in Seattle. Our insurance paid 80% (Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO) and we only had to pay around $250 for 2 casts and a new brace/shoes. Anything else you need to know, someone here is bound to have information about! Angel Re: Heel not seated in shoe Have you or anyone gone to see Ponseti from another state? Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. We live in Texas. I contacted Joyce who said there are no certified Ponseti doctors in our state. Which is odd, because my son's ortho's nurse said all of the doctors at his office were. I think the nurse was mistaken. > > > > I am sorry to post again; I have so many questions and I have > > > gotten > > > > such wonderful feedback from all of you!! > > > > > > > > I read on this board that if a foot is not fully corrected then > > the > > > > shoes do not work. Guest guest
Some doctors say they are certified when they aren ot, not really sure why. All they have to do is send Dr P documentation that they are obtaining the expected results with the method. Anyway, from Texas you can take Angel Flights no problem. I also know of a family who drove it (at least once - dont remember if Audra drove the first time or not, but they did the second time). Here is the link for what looks like your closest Angel Flight: http://www.angelflight.com/contacts.htm Angel Re: Heel not seated in shoe Thanks for your reply. We live in Texas. Guest guest
Some of us have used Angel Flights, look them up on the web. There's a small airport in Iowa City and a larger commercial airport in a town (?) not far away. s. Re: Heel not seated in shoe Have you or anyone gone to see Ponseti from another state? Guest guest
Forgot to add there is also bus and train stations in Iowa City if you travel that way. s. Re: Heel not seated in shoe Cari, Many people on this board have traveled from out of state and out of country to Iowa City to see Dr. Ponseti. What region do you live in? There are organizations such as Angel Flights where volunteer pilots fly children and their parents for medical treatment for free. Some of the families on this board have used their services. There is a lot of info in the links section, Dr. Ponseti's secretary Joyce might be able to help you with travel information also. Have you looked into seeking out experienced Ponseti doctors who are closer to you? There are a handful of doctors that come highly recommended who have a lot of experience in treating older children just like the doctors in Iowa City. > > > I am sorry to post again; I have so many questions and I have > > gotten > > > such wonderful feedback from all of you!! > > > > > > I read on this board that if a foot is not fully corrected then > the > > > shoes do not work.
