Guest guest
We just had to do this with .. Ponseti himself recommended the second tenotomies. I definately see a much bigger stretch in his feet. I was very nervous as well. But we've done it and i'm glad.. Good luck to you.. Second Tenotomy??? Hi everyone. I took Ethan to the ortho and orthotist today. He is still pulling that right foot out. I tried all of your suggestions but nothing helped. Anyway, the orthotist cut a hole in the back of the Markell shoes so that we could see if his heel is all the way down and it isn't. I figured it wasn't and kind of thought they would have to recast for a time. However, Dr. Showalter feels that he needs another tenotomy on that foot and I don't know how comfortable I am with that. If it didn't stretch enough the first time, is it going to the second time? Just thought I would see if any of you had heard of having a second one done. He also feels that we should have the sandals so I am going to be checking into that as well. I was also thinking of emailing Dr. Ponseti and send him some pictures of Ethan's feet and see what he thinks. Anyway, any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated!! Guest guest
My daughter Olivia also had two tenotomies. Her first was done at a Shriner's Hospital, but did not achieve full correction. We then took her to see Dr. Ponseti himself and Dr. Morcuende did the second tenotomy. Dr. Ponseti told us that it is rare for a baby to need a second tenotomy, but it does happen. Good Luck! Guest guest
Hi! We just had a second tenotomy 3/25/04. Emma was born 9/20/02 with severe bilateral clubfoot. Many casts, a tenotomy, a DBB that wouldn't stay on (the flat one), more casts, another DBB that stayed on (!), and just walking shoes for several months, and more casts... another tenotomy was finally recommended. Emma's feet stretch so much more now. We are about to finish our 2nd month in the DBB (2nd of 4, as dictates the Ponseti protocol). We have an appointment on the 18th. We are spending a few weeks in Iowa this summer with my mom (I'm originally from Iowa... born and raised just a hour away). We are going to have an appointment with Dr Ponseti. I really want to meet him, but I would also like to get his opinion on Emma's feet. Our doctor is AWESOME, and I don't question any of our treatment. I just want Dr Ponseti to tell us what he sees when he looks at Emma's chubby little feet! Her right foot is stubborn, but at this point I think that she needs to walk on it more and " teach " it to be flat when she walks. She walks on the outside of her foot, but not drastically. As far as the correction goes, she is over- corrected, as she should be! :-) I don't think you should worry about having another tenotomy. We had much better results after the 2nd, than the first. I don't know what the difference was. Good Luck! Kratochvil www.pediatric-orthopedic-foundation.org > Hi everyone. I took Ethan to the ortho and orthotist today. Guest guest
Hi , I was wondering if you could clarify a couple of things from your post. I was wondering what you meant when you said " We are about to finish our 2nd month in the DBB (2nd of 4, as dictates the Ponseti protocol). " Do you mean the 3 months of wearing the brace 23 hours a day? I can't think of anything we were told which involved 4 months. Also you mentioned wearing only walking shoes for a few months- do you mean that she was wearing the brace only at night, or was Emma completely out of the brace? Caroline, mom to Zeke, 13 months, now a walker, bcf > > Hi everyone. I took Ethan to the ortho and orthotist today. He is > > still pulling that right foot out. Guest guest
Hello again! My doctor has always told me that it was 4 months in the DBB. I went back to Dr Ponseti's website to find the 4 month info, and to my surprise it said 2-3 months! According to our Dr, who has trained with Dr Ponseti, but is not listed on his website, he has been taught 4 months in the DBB following the tenotomy. I am emailing our doctor to find out where I can get the information in print. If it is in fact only 3 months, then maybe we can go back to our walking shoes after our next appointment! We were just about ready to begin another round of casts last fall, when we took a trip to see my mom in Iowa. At our appointment right before we left, Dr said to keep her in the bar 23/7 and when we got back we would cast. We went in for the appointment expecting to be casted and since she was " surfing " and " cruising " in the bar, he suggested gong to nights and naps for 3 months and then we would re-evaluate. So that's when I got a script for the Markell straightlast boots and she did well in them. She was walking within 3-4 days after the bar came off during the day. We went back the first part of February and I was concerned about her leaning too much on the outside of her right foot. Her feet were pretty severe when she was born, but the right one is the once continuing to give us problems. At that appt. we casted only the right foot. After the two weeks were up at the next appt, I told him I wanted both feet casted so as to not compromise the progress of the left foot. So then we did 2 sets of double casts, lasting 2 weeks each, then we had our second tenotomy 3/25. Her feet are doing great now. She is in the bar for probably 21-22 hours/day. We take it off when we get home at night, around 630p, she plays for awhile, has dinner, and has her bath, then right back in the bar for bed. She is usually in bed by 830-900. I am hoping to get the go-ahead for nights/naps only at our next appointment on 6/18. We are going on vacation the following week and will be in Iowa for 3 weeks with my family. I am going to see Dr Ponseti while we are there. I am so excited. As far as the length of time in the DBB following the tenotomy, I will let you know as soon as I hear back from our doctor. You can see a picture of Emma on our foundation's website at www.pediatric- orthopedic-foundation.org. There is a picture of Emma in her one- legged cast in February. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I am interested in finding out if things have changed one way or the other! www.pediatric-orthopedic-foundation.org > > > Hi everyone.
