I'm in Lacey. Just south of Tacoma and North of Olympia. I was actually

able to find 2 docs down here that do the Ponseti Method. One by the name of

Molina Kochhar and the other Terrence Hess. The first has written papers on the

benefits of the Ponseti method versus the other. She's seen Dr. Ponseti have

success with casting kids up to 3 years old and feels we should receive

excellent benefits using the Ponseti. Unfortunately I can't go to Iowa as I

have 3

other kids and noone to watch them.

I know nothing about these Dr's that you just mentioned and I am sure they are

very nice, but you really need to go see Dr. Mosca at Childrens in Seattle. He

is the ONLY ONE ON DR PONSETI's APPROVED LIST. If you see one of these other

Dr's you are gambling and it would be a shame when you are an hour away from the

expert.

I respectfully disagree with Robin. Before worrying about changing

doctors, contact Dr Ponseti. His list is not always up to date, and

he may well know of Dr Kochhar. I don't have the link handy, but you

can get a list of questions to ask that will indicate if the doctor

is using the Ponseti Method up to par, so to speak. While 10 months

is usually considdered " advanced " for casting, it is definitely not

too old! if you are comfortable with the doctor and feel that she is

doing the method correctly, then go to her. If you have doubts, know

that there is a doctor at Children's Hospital in Seattle that you can

go to.

Lacey,

If I read your original post right, your son is 1 year and 7 months

old (born 10/02). At this age, I would not take the chance of using

a doctor who is not well-seasoned in the Ponseti method. You don't

have time to " try " with a doctor who is relatively new to the

method. On the west coast, based on my own personal knowledge, I

would only recommend Dr. Mosca, Dr. Pirani in Vancouver, or Dr.

Colburn in California. You should call/email Dr. Ponseti soon to get

his recommendations. Going to Iowa would be your best bet, however.

You can take your other children with you- lots of other families

have done it and I'm sure they can chime in if you're willing to

consider it. They usually stay at the Mc House. You

can get flight assistance from groups like Angel Flights as well.

I hope this is helpful in getting your thought process started. Has

he had any bracing, stretching, physical therapy etc.? Does he stand

on the outer edge of his foot? Do you have pictures that you can

email to Dr. Ponseti and/or Dr. Mosca?

Correcting your son's foot non-surgically is not impossible at this

age, but he will need to be seen by " the best of the best " in order

to do so.

Just posted the link to our story. We have had 3 doctors. First one,

non-POnseti. Second one, our daughter was their first Ponseti patient. At

that time, there was discussion on this list about going to an " approved "

doctor, but my point was that if we want the method to spread world wide,

then some children are going to be guinea pigs in order for more doctors to

learn.

Because this method is spreading so quickly and is new to many doctors, it

is imperative that the parent be as informed as possible about what

specifically the method entails. At least I was aware that my daughter was a

guinea pig AND I was able to learn how to monitor her treatment.

As a result of learning the details of this method from this list, I was

able to make an informed decision to switch to a much more qualified Ponseti

doctor when it became obvious that our second doctor was not following the

protocol. Every appointment she would deviate from the protocol in some way.

Partly because she was new to the method.

Like they say, forewarned is forearmed (or something like that...)

I could write a book about my experience and maybe I will some day, but not

now! Any questions? please ask!

Hope this helps,
