Guest guest
(and Charity), Yes, there have been a couple letter writing campaigns over the last several years. The letter Holly mentioned was from early 2000 (right after I started this list). There is more info about this in message 152 (WAY back in the archives). I also remember writing a letter to Oprah way back when as well. I believe Allyson Egbert and Lori Stime organized this one (I've been searching the archives to no avail for more about this one). There have also been a few local tv or newspaper articles over the last several years, but nothing national that I'm aware of. I hope this helps at least a little. Guest guest
I've sent out my fair share of letters in the past 4 years also. I've tried everything from local television and newspapers to national tv shows, magazines, and newspapers to no avail. I could never understand why it didn't catch the eye of the media as it has all the makings of a fantastic " feel-good " story: 1) elderly doctor with a colorful personal history in the midwest....in a state stereotypically known for cornfields, not medicine 2) babies (everyone *loves* babies) whose quality of life will be dramatically improved 3) one of the most common birth defects- it affects many thousands of children 4) benefits to third world countries demonstrated- helping many thousands more of the world's poorest children 5) bashing of the " money-hungry " medical community While I appreciate reading/viewing inspiring stories in the media (especially in parenting magazines) about children with rare diseases who overcome the odds......how many families do those stories actually *benefit* with the information? I haven't figured out why this information hasn't been more wide-spread in the media since most people know at least one person in their life who has a foot disorder related to clubfoot. I also haven't figured out why the AP hasn't picked up on some of the great local stories that have run in the newspapers. I've been waiting for a celebrity/famous person to have a child with clubfoot so that it might bring the method into the media spotlight. Then you have a " champion " for your cause- like J. Fox for Parkinsons & Reeve for paralysis etc. I'm done rambling now...maybe we just need to publish our own book of inspirational stories " chicken soup for talipes equinovarus afflicted " and see if we can make it to the best-seller list! I think we've got a headstart with Seema's reference to Dr. P's method in her biography in one Chicken Soup edition! ha ha
Guest guest
Maybe if we all wrote are own letters with our own experiences and sent them, it would show that there is an audience for this kind of show. If someone wanted to compile a list of address to send the letters to I would be willing to write mine.
Guest guest
I have also written to Oprah and never received a response. We just need to keep plugging away. I know I am. www.pediatric-orthopedic-foundation.org
