Well, I currently still have Mirena coil (also known as IUS) - had it

for nearly 2 years. I have had quite a few problems on and off with

it, so am dubious about recommending it to anyone now. Previous to

that was on the combined pill (apart from stopping to conceive DS's).

DH had the snip on 9 March this year, so have to wait 16 weeks before

samples are sent off for analysis. We need 2 consecutive negative

samples before we can stop using contraception.

Hope that answers your question. DH hasn't had too many problems

following the operation and would happily recommend it to anyone.

I was on the pill till about 37 ish, then the coil, which was fine for

2 yrs then gave me no end of problems, including piercing my uterus

and going AWOL in my abdomen. I ended up having to have a

hysterectomy (they found the coil by my bladder).

Hysterectomies are great once you are sure you have finished having

kids! No periods, no worries. In fact I have had LESS menopausal

symptoms after it, than before.

I was on the pill for ages - but I refuse to pump hormones into my body

especially while I am still feeding Kitty. It took me AGES to get

pregnant with Kitty and I think that had a lot to do with the fact that I was

still feeding . (I got pg 6 months after I stopped

feeding ). I would like another baby, and apart from the fact I don't

want to be heavily pregnant when I go to Australia for

Christmas then I don't really mind when it happens.

Oh, hey, I've got a Persona baby too! No. 4 was conceived on a green

light would you believe. DH had refused to have the snip after No. 3

but he was off to the docs like a shot after No. 4!

Hmm, I guess I am one of those still in touch with their teenage side

as we use condoms. Have been on the pill and hated it, not that it

disagreed with me or anything it's just I disagree with it!

Always thought I should try the cap but too put off by bad comedy

sketches about it shooting round the bathroom while woman tries to put

it in.

Am also dabbling with a bit of proper temperature charting (in the

style of Fertility Awareness Method) so i can actually understand my

body - spurred on by enthusiasm for this approach on HomebirthUK.

Finding it really liberating. I remember the first time I worked out

that my mid-cycle pain was indeed ovulation - and promptly announced

" I'm ovulating right now! " to DP while we were in Sainsburys. I hadn't

noticed we had just passed the egg section but he had and was v.

amused by the connection!

Re. Persona. One of my friends from university got pregnant while

using it about 5 years ago. She was involved in the big court case

against them. I don't know whether it has been settled yet though, she

had to drop out of when she stopped qualifying for legal aid and

couldn't cough up for the vast legal fees.

Hmmm! I suppose it is a moveable feast so to speak.

If we do start off in the same room/bed one of us invariably " decamps " to

the spare room.

I keep threatening to get a bigger bed but haven't yet for lots of

logistical reasons.

The bed only sees the sleeping activity so I don't see the point of sharing

if you can't sleep!

Bit of a sore point with me I'm afraid.

Which bit sounded familiar Kirasten? BTW

Is this forced or not though?

I've been charting occurrences on my monthly chart - still time for the

twice!!

And nobody has mentioned withdrawal yet either add that into the equation

and you stay baby free.

We probably only share about 2 nights out of 7 at the moment! If

it's cold and the such like!!

Also having 3 in the bed makes it impossible to sleep anyway!

Plus there is always the argument factor, which probably counts for

at least three of the non-sharing nights.

Just interesting to see that not everyone shares every night!

Thanks for letting me intrude.

We have used the rythmn method, if that is what you call it

(withdrawl if not).

Has worked so far, so I have better keep my fingers crossed.

This is turning into a veritable NCT-Persona Baby group! My son is a

persona baby - although to be strictly fair he was conceived after we'd left

the machine at my Mum's house after a weekend there, so missed 3 days of

sticks.

Cue hilarious conversation with Mum on the Monday: " , I think

you've left your mobile phone behind "

Vicki: " Huh? "

M: " Yes. Your white one. It was by your bed. "

V: " OH! Mum - that's not a mobile phone. "

M: " Well, is it important? Shall I post it or can it wait till next time

you come? "

V: " No, Mum, I think you'd better post it. "

M: " Well, what is it? "

V: " It's my Persona, Mum - it's a method of contraception. "

M: " Oh my God! Shall I send it registered post?!! "

Bless...

from what I;ve heard, Persona doesn;t seem to take into account that

sperm can live up to 5 days in the right conditions, and so if you

have sex 5 days before you ovulate there is quite a high chance that

the Marathon runner sperm are still around!

check out www.lifecyclesoft.com for some free software that helps

chart temp/mucus etc, highly fascinating even if you don;t use it as a

sole contraception....

I always thought I ovulated on day 14 or 15, and so would plan dthe

deed for then ( but its more like day 17 or 18, which explains why we

have girls...IYSWIM)

I was on the pill for a while but hated it. I don't like putting pills into

my body unless I am very ill.

We then moved on to the Cap which I think is under rated. I found it

easy to use and felt far more comfortable with that than the pill. We also

had condoms issued by the Family Planning Clinic (are GP's still unable

to issue condoms?) which were useful to have for an " unplanned " quickie!

At the beginning of the year I slept in the spare room and DH was very

miffed about this because we are married!! Now it is him who goes to the

spare room - probably admiring the decorating as he has just done in there -

and it doesn't bother him so much now. He likes his sleep and I always seem

to disturb him. I did have a cold for about 5 months so this didn't help.

, I don't know who told your DH that sex post vasectomy was

'different' but a quick poll amongst husbands who've had vasectomies (ok

I've only got one) came up with the opinion that they were either fibbing or

had been extremely unlucky. reckons it's *exactly* the same apart

from the lack of worry that you've just conceived (therefore better?!?) We'd

used condoms before - so it made quite a difference not using them, massive

improvement there actually, especially after having not used them during the

baby making years. They just didn't seem like a very 'grown-up' method, and

we'd had enough of the 'fiddling about'!

I'd tried the diaphragm after Izzy was born but the nurse who fitted said " I

usually tell girls (sic) to pop them in every night after brushing your

teeth - just in case! " hhmmm major waste of contraceptive jelly I thought

to myself and they're a bit of a faff to use 'as needed'. Never fancied the

pill, I've got quite enough of my own hormones already thank you very much

so those new-fangled injections and Norton implants (aren't they

discontinued now?) were out of the question too. So snippety-snip it was,

decided all by himself that he'd have one after refusing when I'd

tentatively discussed it previously. We were galvanised into action after a

scare when nne was about 11 months old (got drunk didn't bother using

anything v.v.rare occurrence) He got done soon after she was one and he was

30 which is quite young I think. Different areas seem to have different

rules about ages (of dh's and dk's) amount of counselling beforehand and

waiting lists, round here you can wait between 6 weeks and a year depending

which hospital (anecdotally)

I can't recommend the snip highly enough, it took a while to get used to not

having to *do* anything and after nearly more than a year of relying on it

I've finally stopped greeting my period with a sigh of relief BUT you should

really only do it if you've categorically decided on no more babies, you

already knew that though didn't you ; )

, KWYM about gagging for it during ovulation, rhythm method just

wouldn't work for us and 'withdrawal' would just be like watching the last

bar of Green and Black's finest on a plate for ten minutes then chucking it

away. : D
