Guest guest
I agree with others who compare correcting the head shape with braces. That is what I always come back to because I think there are such strong similarities. Braces are often for cosmetic reasons, but there can also be underlying issues that the braces are trying to fix or prevent. Let's just say a child has crooked teeth, but no other medical issues. Do your relatives think the parents are being scammed if they get braces for their child? Some kids might have their unusual head shape covered by hair, but what about the kids who don't or kids with facial asymmetry? I don't think most people are trying to get an absolutely PERFECT head shape. I think we just want it to be "normal" appearing - a lot like why people get braces for teeth. I wonder if your Grandpa would think that seatbelts in cars are hogwash if he never knew anyone who was killed in an accident. I'm not trying to be too harsh toward him. I think older generations think we're challenging the way they did things and saying they aren't correct. Instead we are just saying that new info has come to light. It was the first time most of the aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc had seen Ellie in her band. My husband did (what I think) is a phenomonal job on decorating her helmet. The kids thought it was a "cool hat". Granny thinks she will start a new fashion trend--I wouldn't go that far! One of the uncles thinks all of this is rather silly and that in a couple hundred years from now, people are going to dig up these bands and think our society was obsessed with the perfect head shape. Naturally I tried to sway him from that mentality, but I am not sure it worked. Grandpa is a lawyer and he thinks that because he didn't know of any kids who died of SIDS (personally) while my sister and I were growing up that this whole "Back-to-Sleep" thing is hogwash. He wants to see the foremost doctors and the leading universities publish the adverse affects of "non-perfect" heads before he will buy into it. He isn't convinced that we are all being scammed. What a mix of reactions, huh? I was also reading some of the articles in the files section of this group as well as the "allaboutplagiocephaly" group and was a bit dissappointed that many of them stated that banding kids was more cosmetic than anything. I hope I am not doing this purely for cosmetic reasons. I was told that there are adverse affects if we do not correct the Brachy while we can. Am I mistaken? Oh, I think I am just too analytical and I need to chill out! LOL.I hope everyone is doing well today and thank you for letting me vent.
