Guest guest
My mom was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer with mets to the liver in 2002. She has been off chemo for about the last 6-8 months. Her CEA has almost doubled every 6 weeks, her last blood test showed a CEA in the 900's. She has been feeling fine, however, this week she vomited on Monday then Tuesday. We took her to emergency because her doctor is on vacation this week. They did ran some tests and all they could find was a urinary track infection. The doctor thought the vomiting was due to the infection given her age (81) and gave her cipro by IV, then pills for the next 10 days- this was Tuesday. We thought she was home free until today when she vomited again. When she gets sick it is the projecting type and feels fine afterwards. I am wondering if anyone has seen this as a symptom of colon cancer with liver metastases? Guest guest
I spent the last 1 1/2 day in the emergency room with my mom due to pain and vomiting. When they released her we didn't know anymore than when we went in. They said she has quite a few stones in her gall bladder, but they were leaning more toward the liver since they couldn't make a positive diagnosis. She has an appointment tomorrow with her oncologist so I hope we can keep the pain and vomiting under control until then. He has been on vacation returning tomorrow. She is still in a lot of pain on her right side, she left the hospital with vicadin and compazine. I am so distraught...I am afraid this is the beginning of the inevitable. I really don't know how I can cope with it, my mom is my life..... If anyone can give me some words of advise/support I would be grateful. Guest guest
, On 4/20, just two days ago, I lost my dad to causes other than cancer, but it was such a struggle for him to keep going and he was probably miserable, though we couldn't know how much so. It was so, so difficult to see him that way and I prayed daily for his suffering to end. My mom was so in love with him still after 60 years of marriage, it's been very hard for her to watch him also. An hour before he finally left us, she cradled his head and whispered to him how much she loved him and that it really was okay for him to go if he needed to. It was probably the hardest thing she's ever had to do, and it was the greatest gift she's ever given him. We will never know how much he heard or understood at that point because he was definitely not conscious, but he was so peaceful, I think he really did understand it was okay. The wonderful memories you have will never go away and they'll get you through the really tough times. I wish I could tell you more to help ease your pain, but there aren't any words for that, only prayers for peace and strength. You and your family have extra prayers because I know what you're dealing with. Mom having symptoms My mom was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer with mets to the liver in 2002. Guest guest
I was told when my Uncle was ill in a nursing home. I was there every day from morning to night because I would have cared for him at home but my health didn't permit it at the time so he was there and I had all their services at my disposal and I knew how to make demands. I knew he was at a failure to thrive level and finally I said to him cause he was comatose that it was okay to let go and I knew he was holding on on my behalf. He died that night shortly afterwards and the nurse said the sense of hearing is one of the last to go. Guest guest
I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad when I was 16 and at that age, I thought I knew it all and he knew nothing so all we did was argue. Now I always wonder if he is watching over me, and if he can see that I did ok. I wonder if he is proud of me. That was 43 years ago and it always hurts to think about him. I wish you only good memories and be thankful for all the years you had with your dad. Pat Dawson mystc1celt@...> wrote: , On 4/20, just two days ago, I lost my dad to causes other than cancer, but it was such a struggle for him to keep going and he was probably miserable, though we couldn't know how much so. Guest guest
The pain in my moms side has decreased some, she has vomited on average once or twice per week since the ER visit 2 weeks ago. She had an upper GI today, the doctor performing the test said it is highly probable that the cancer has spread to her stomach. I was so devastated with the news.....I asked if the test was conclusive, and wouldn't a CT scan or a PET scan be a better indicator. He said no, cancer is a progressive disease and there is nothing we can do. We need to meet with the oncologist for next steps. Any thoughts or advice on this latest news?? Guest guest
Please do not jump to any conclusions yet. Wait and see what the test results bring. I am Praying for her and you both. Guest guest
Thank you for replying. We just talked to the oncologist and there is a mass in her stomach with polyps and rigid edges, which they suspect is cancer. They can't be completely sure without a biopsy. To do a biopsy they would sedate her and put an instrument into her stomach. If the results are positive, the only treatment is surgery. Do to her age (80), and other health issues, I don't think she is a candidate for surgery. Defiantly not the news we wanted to hear. I am devastated to say the least...she has done so well up to now. I knew eventually this day would come, but I am not ready for it never the less. I love my mom so much that I can't bear to think of losing her and the pain she will endure with this disease. Guest guest
Please, Please hang in there. You are going to have to stay strong for your mom. She will need your strength. You may want to get another opinion. As for the surgery... It may be her only option. Without it she may have more problems. Getting a second opinion might be the way to go. I am Praying for her as well as you who must be strong. Guest guest
Oh I know it is so hard to deal with such news as you just heard. Well we can hope it isn't cancer but then what? She is still not up to surgery. But at least it won't be as hard to deal with as cancer. You have to excuse my chemo brain - I sometimes don't make sense when I try to answer a question. I will pray for you, your mom and the family. Give her a gentle hug from me. My mom was gone with a snap of the finger and I never did get to say good bye to her. Take care and God Bless JOlene michelle_bucholz@... wrote: > Thank you for replying.
