Guest guest
Unfortunately doctors are GREAT cutters but not nutritionists. Listen to those long termies, , me and others lol. We drink protein shakes - 5 to 7 a day, and have not gained an ounce... unless we hit the sugar, milk and/or cookies (peeps in 's case). I only gained some weight when I STOPPED doing the shakes and over a year period of time, I gained it, got flabby, fatigued, no strength. Your body needs the shakes. I went from 200 calories a day when I was sick to about 1300 a day with the shakes, and I LOST weight... protein puts you in ketosis, which burns fat. that's all I can understand about it. Besides the fact I feel WONDERFUL now! Or at least getting there. Our bodies already are going on less food, less calories. The shakes we use the PROTEIN from, that is absorbed into our muscles and what we need for survival. I went off shakes and crashed and ended up off work for 15 weeks due to anemia and protein malnutrition... my friend ended up in the hospital with IVs coming out of everywhere. It's not pretty. Guest guest
A lot of docs say that about the protein drinks. You do have to watch and read labels. Anything that Vitalady sells you can trust that it will be low in sugar and she will tell you how much to mix in one drink to make 30 grams of protein at a time. That's the max we can absorb at one time. If you aren't able to eat much, drinking protein is the only way you're gonna get in what you need to feel healthy and energized. Try them, like 2-3 a day and see if it doesn't help. You may find that your weight loss speeds up as well. If they don't work for you, and I'd be really surprised if they didn't, then let us know. Maybe we can help you figure out why they're not helping you. Take care. Guest guest
Better to drink every day, at least 2, very min. Made with water, though, not milk Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. T www.vitalady.com If you are interested in PayPal, please click here: https://secure.paypal.com/affil/pal=vitalady%40bigfoot.com Protein Shakes My doctor tells me not to drink the protein shakes because they have calories but that seems like the total opposite of what I see and hear from other people. I have bought some of the protein powder but I don't drink every day. Is this bad?

I have bought some of the protein powder but I don't drink every day. Is this bad?<<< I think the general concensus is that most surgeons are great at doing what they are trained to do - this complex and life changing surgery. However, and that's a big however, they are not experts in nutrition and especially not in nutrition for wls post ops. In fact, most nutritionista and registered dieticians don't really know what we need - not much is taught in their programs about it. I just talked to a young man who has his degree in nutrition, has gone through his internships, and is getting ready to take the exam to become a registered dietician. He told me that they " touched on " nutrition after wls in one of his classes. He said they were told that we malabsorb protein and some of the vitamins and minerals. He did not learn how we should compensate for this except that we should be taking vitamin and mineral supplements. He had no clue that it should be different depending on whether we are distal or proximal or somewhere in between or that everyone with the surgery will need something other than just one multivitamin and a tums. He did not know that we need calcium citrate rather than other forms of calcium. And while he was aware that we should be getting at least 60 grams of protein a day (again not considering the length of our common channels), he hadn't thought about how difficult it is to get that amount in by food alone, much less that fact that we don't absorb nearly all the food protein we take in. He was wanting to come and talk to our wls support group in town. We told him that he needs to do allot more research before he is ready to speak to our group because he didn't have the answers to the questions we knew our group would bring up. The protein shakes aren't just empty calories. The good ones (blended whey proteins that are low carb and low sugar) are pre-digested proteins that our altered systems absorb more readily. Our muscles, including major ones like our heart, must have protein to operate effectively and efficiently. Because it is pre-digested, the protein shake can go directly into nourishing our muscles. Food protein must be broken down by the body's digestion - something we don't do very well at all any more - before it can be used by our muscles. If you drink the shakes mixed with just water and ice (not milk or fruit other things that contain sugar) there is little chance of those calories causing us to gain weight or to slow our loss. So, rather than saying it is 'bad' or 'good,' you need to do your own research and decide what's best for you. I look to those who are many years out for their experience and wisdom. Many have gained that wisdom through trial and error that cost them their health at times. They now try to help us avoid the problems they had from lack of solid advice when they had their surgeries. I want to learn from them and not have the same nutritional problems that many suffered with as they were learning. So, I know that for me, even if my surgeon tried to persuade me not to drink my shakes, I would continue to use the shakes because I want to stay healthy and truly believe that this is the way to do that. Often, I hear people who don't do the protein shakes and/or adequate vitamin and mineral supplements say, " I'm doing fine. My last labs were good. So I don't want or need to follow that advice. " Well, I have read about B.'s battle to regain her health after not supplementing properly. And and Don's (vitalady and vitaguy) problems with osteoporosis. And the " gray ghosts " that I see at the doctor's office who say they don't do anything but eat. People may feel great for awhile without supplements and their labs may even look good for awhile, but I believe that they will eventually crash, just like others have. So I think that it only makes sense to do what it takes to keep myself healthy. After all, that's why I had this surgery in the first place - to regain and keep my health. There is a yahoo group that focus on Protein. You can find it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ossg-Protein . You might want to join that to learn more about the protein shake issue. Best of luck in your journey. Sheri In Sunny Florida

Guest guest
> Um, have this baby RD come to your group and LISTEN. <<< I think he's scared to come now. He had an " associate " with him, a nice older lady who runs a family fitness center in Tarpon Springs. They are representing Isotonics. Not sure why she came along, but she rescued him several times when he dug himself a hole. I had him look over my labs and asked him what he would recommend. All he could come up with was to take antioxidants. I even had to point out my ferritin level of 12, and he still didn't know what to say. At least the woman said that he needed to do lots of research before he came to speak TO us. You are right. I should invite him to come and LISTEN. Maybe I could get him trained.
