Guest guest
The Komen Foundation does fine work, and funds - in addition to scientific studies, community halth education efforts to women, traditionally on the margins of society. Indeed, I wrote a grant 4 years ago, which was funded, which provided outreach to woment in the Methadon maintenance CLinic of the hospital where I work, where they were provided with free mammograms, and taught self-examination, etc. this is from the Lancet: Lancet. 2004 Mar 27;363(9414):1007-1 Breast cancer and abortion: collaborative reanalysis of data from 53 epidemiological studies, including 83?000 women with breast cancer from 16 countries. Beral V, Bull D, Doll R, Peto R, Reeves G; Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer. BACKGROUND: The Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer has brought together the worldwide epidemiological evidence on the possible relation between breast cancer and previous spontaneous and induced abortions. METHODS: Data on individual women from 53 studies undertaken in 16 countries with liberal abortion laws were checked and analysed centrally. Relative risks of breast cancer--comparing the effects of having had a pregnancy that ended as an abortion with those of never having had that pregnancy--were calculated, stratified by study, age at diagnosis, parity, and age at first birth. Because the extent of under-reporting of past induced abortions might be influenced by whether or not women had been diagnosed with breast cancer, results of the studies--including a total of 44000 women with breast cancer--that used prospective information on abortion (ie, information that had been recorded before the diagnosis of breast cancer) were considered separately from results of the studies--including 39000 women with the disease--that used retrospective information (recorded after the diagnosis of breast cancer). FINDINGS: The overall relative risk of breast cancer, comparing women with a prospective record of having had one or more pregnancies that ended as a spontaneous abortion versus women with no such record, was 0.98 (95% CI 0.92-1.04, p=0.5). The corresponding relative risk for induced abortion was 0.93 (0.89-0.96, p=0.0002). Among women with a prospective record of having had a spontaneous or an induced abortion, the risk of breast cancer did not differ significantly according to the number or timing of either type of abortion. Published results on induced abortion from the few studies with prospectively recorded information that were not available for inclusion here are consistent with these findings. Overall results for induced abortion differed substantially between studies with prospective and those with retrospective information on abortion (test for heterogeneity between relative risks: chi2(1) =33.1, p<0.0001). INTERPRETATION: Pregnancies that end as a spontaneous or induced abortion do not increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. Collectively, the studies of breast cancer with retrospective recording of induced abortion yielded misleading results, possibly because women who had developed breast cancer were, on average, more likely than other women to disclose previous induced abortions. and...from the International Journal of Cancer Int J Cancer. 2006 Oct 1;119(7):1741-5. Breast cancer risk in relation to abortion: Results from the EPIC study. The role of spontaneous and induced abortion on breast cancer risk is examined among 267,361 women recruited into the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition between 1992 and 2000. The data were collected from 20 centers, across 9 countries, and included information on a total of 4,805 women with breast cancer, of whom 1,657 reported having ever had any type of abortion. Overall, the relative risk of breast cancer in women who reported ever having had a spontaneous abortion was not significantly elevated when compared with women who reported never having had such an abortion (RR = 1.07, 95% CI = 0.99-1.14). However, there was some evidence of a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer among women who reported having had 2 or more spontaneous abortions (1.20, 1.07-1.35). The relative risk of breast cancer among women who reported ever having had an induced abortion when compared to women who reported never having had an induced abortion was 0.95 (0.87-1.03). Overall, the findings provide further unbiased evidence of the lack of an adverse effect of induced abortion on breast cancer risk. Guest guest
I don't know if B. Komen donates to Planned Parenthood, but breastcancer.org states abortion does >not< cause breast cancer. " In February 2003, an expert panel at the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) reviewed all available studies on links between pregnancy, abortion, and breast cancer. The experts concluded, based on the evidence from all the studies, that there is no link between natural or induced abortions and breast cancer risk. You can read more about their findings in the breastcancer.org April 2003 Research News. Guest guest
Hi nne, I went to the komen web site to see what I could find out. A search there came up with 2 references to planned parenthood in their 1997 & 2001 annual report. It looks like the 2 references for health professionals associated with Planned Parenthood was for awarding them for work done on BC awareness & outreach. I think we all need to keep in mind that planned parenthood services include reproductive & sexual health. - & nne Svihlik wrote on 10/2/2006, 6:48 PM: > What bother me about this is that Komen says ALL of their money goes > for cancer research. Guest guest
That's right. Planned Parenthood is one organization that advocates for the rights of women. And " planned " means that they also provide information on birth control. I contribute to the local chapter. And this year, I got involved with Komen, by doing the " sleep in " for a cure. Guest guest
That's right. Planned Parenthood is one organization that advocates for the rights of women. And " planned " means that they also provide information on birth control. I contribute to the local chapter. And this year, I got involved with Komen, by doing the " sleep in " for a cure. Guest guest
My 2 cents........... Abortions do not contribute to future breast cancers. Although statistics have proved that women who have never had children are at a higher risk for breast cancer than women who have had children. I don't know if this is related to the fact that childless women never lactate. If someone knows more............please enlighten Mimosa. peace...........kimmy Colleen wrote: That's right. Guest guest
Hi Kimmy, I don't think lactation can effect bc rates. The factors I've heard are that women who don't have children, and women who have children after 40 are more at risk. Also, women who menustrate early and women who go through menopause after 55 are more at risk. I think these all have to do with increased estrogen. Though I wonder if that impacts women whose tumors are er/pr negative. I had my children late (39 & 40); my tumors were er/pr negative. - kimmy wrote on 10/4/2006, 11:56 PM: > My 2 cents........... > Abortions do not contribute to future breast cancers. Guest guest
Must have been nice, I breast feed and my periods came like clockwork. -- Re: Please be aware --- wrote: > Hi Kimmy, > > I don't think lactation can effect bc rates. well, it does in a positive way - especially if you've been an extended breast-feeder - because breastfeeding normally supresses menstuation (my period didn't come back till ~ 13 months after I had my son - I nursed him for 3 years) - there's a reduction in exposure to estrogen... of course, risk/benefit statistics are just that -= statistics - look at me! nd I know there are other women on this list who nursed for years marisa __________________________________________________
