If that is it, surely once it feels purified the sores will end. Are you getting enough Vitamin C? There are other weight training types on the list who can answer for you husband's weakness. I hope it just takes care of itself before too long, hang in there, Marty -----Original Message-----From: brittgower@... My bad side effect is sever eczema/psoriasis. Within a week of starting this diet (so about three or so weeks ago) I started getting sores popping up. First it was just a couple, but now it is MANY. He lifts weights after work each night and the other night he came home ready to quit this WOE because he is not getting stronger, but weaker. Guest guest
Britt, I've struggled with eczema most of my life. I am sensitive to many chemical substances, including most perfumes and many cleaning products. Although you've never had the problem before, it could still be the result of something other than this WOE, or only indirectly the result of the WOE - a specific food allergy rather than a general reaction to ketosis. Allergies and sensitivities tend to develop with exposure. For example, if you are eating a lot of eggs, and never ate many before, you could have become sensitized over the last several weeks and are just now reacting. In my case, the skin problems are better, not worse, with this WOE. Hydrocortisone cream (not a steroid) and drinking lots of water help for me. You might also try reducing your consumption of typical allergens like dairy (especially if under this WOE you consume much more than you did before) and see if that helps. Strength training is a different issue. A lot depends on the specific program he follows. As a preliminary step in going into ketosis, the body eliminates the glycogen in the liver and muscles. That glycogen provides ready energy to the muscles under certain conditions. The loss of that energy source does interfere with performance in certain types of weight training programs. This does not mean that he is getting weaker, but it can seem that way. There are several ways to address this problem, which will most probably disappear in several months as his body adjusts. He can alter his program to emphasize short duration, high intensity OR very long duration, low intensity rather than medium duration, moderate intensity exercise - 1 set, 5-8 reps per muscle groups of very high weight OR 4-5 sets, 15-20 reps of very low weight rather than 3 sets 8-12 reps of moderate weights. These plans reduce the need for glycogen to sustain performance. If he doesn't need to lose weight, or only lose a little, he can up his carbs to stay out of ketosis - just make sure that none of those carbs are simple sugars or refined flours. As an alternative, he could " carb up " once a week and alter his program to put glycogen-using workouts at the beginning of the week and aerobic workouts toward the end, ala Body Opus. > O.k. this diet is having some bad side effects on dh and I. Guest guest
Britt, I know I've read somewhere that red meat and egg yolks have something in them that can trigger eczema. I suffer from eczema myself, but it doesn't seem any worse with this WOE. Mine seems to get triggered by weather and how many dishes I'm washing:-). -- Kristn 257/234/230(mini)/145 Started 8/5/2001
Guest guest
I also have unexplained sores, mostly on my left knee, looks like maybe I fell and scraped it but then I don't remember doing that, is that the kind of thing you have as well? I have been a little off balance between a severe ear infection and the pain meds I lose my balance quite a bit, maybe I did fall or bump into something and don't remember. Doesn't really hurt, but really annoying esp. if it rubs up against my jeans. Becca

No. Mine are on my uppper body. They are mostly on my neck, back and stomach (although I noticed they are creaping down my butt now too -- lovely!) They start out really small and red, then they grow much larger (the size of a quarter...sometimes round, sometimes oval) and have a red, itchy outer ring and the middle is a strange, discolored skin tone. They are multiplying like rabbits!! Much like my stretch marks did with the twins - LOL. I figure that if they get to where they are on my face I am off this WOE until they are gone and I will start over and slowly add stuff in. Hopefully that doesn't happen because I'm enjoying my jeans being loose Ask your doctor what he/she thinks it is...can't hurt. Although mine really had little to say about my condition...who knows what she would have said if I had told her that it started after starting this WOE. I'm sure it wouldn't have been very supportive of staying on it. Britt

Guest guest
Nope. I thought that at first too, but the doctor looked at them very closely and I'm sure she's seen ringworm before. Besides that, it doesn't really look like the pictures of ringworm I've seen...some of them are really odd shaped. Thanks for thinking of me though Britt > > > > > > No. Mine are on my uppper body. Guest guest
O.k. I changed my mind. I finally found a good site with lots of examples of ringworm and some of them look exactly like what I have. Hmmm...strange though because her scraping should have shown it was a fungus (which it says is how ringworm is diagnosed). I don't have any pets, but now that I think about it, I was around my mom's two cats and two dogs the weekend before I started Atkins...how's that for a good coincidence!! Well, at least I have an idea what it is now...now just gotta have it confirmed so I can take care of it. Thanks for inspiring me to look harder.
