Hi all,

I forwarded 's Reuters-link to a reporter of one of the biggest

Finnish newspapers, and to my surprise they called me the next day

and said they wanted to interview us. They published the story a week

ago. The story can be seen at

http://www.kaleva.fi/cf/juttu.cfm?j=389448 (in Finnish only, sorry!).

The story was good, but there were a couple of things that bothered

me. They had also interviewed Veeti's original doctor who said he is

the first doctor in Finland using the Ponseti method. That isn't

entirely so, as he is still modifying it quite a bit. I organised

funding for his trip to Iowa city to train with Dr.Ponseti, but for

some reason he didn't go. I heard from another parent that he had had

problems with the money, but I don't know why he didn't contact me

about it. Anyway, a local politican came to talk to me about the

article, and promised to contact the doctor and see if she could

arrange the funding for his trip.

The doctor also said that " it is the European mentality to be eager

to fix things quickly with a knife " meaning that many surgeons still

think that surgery is better than having to wear the FAB for years..

The doctors in Helsinki have also changed their methods, and are now

using tenotomies and FABs, but also major surgeries. It sounds like

they are using a modified Ponseti method too. The reason why they

feel the need to modify the time-tested method is incomprehensible to

me.

So I guess the good news is that the Ponseti method is definitely

getting publicity in Finland, and the bad news is that we still don't

have any doctors using it properly.

Sanna, I can understand your frustration, especially if the method is

not being utilized in its entirety. At the very least, it's a step

in the right direction and good for you for getting it underway!

All the best,

Sanna,

Congratulations on getting the article into the major newspaper.

And I am sorry that the doctors you mention seem to still be

modifying something. But what you are experiencing there is not

much different than what many other areas went through during the

transition over to the Ponseti method. Over time, they hopefully

will continue to keep switching over more and more.

You may not have seen it, but there was a parent from Sweden on one

of the other sites a few days ago talking about their experience

with the Ponseti method. I will copy her message from the Yahoo

Clubfoot group here with a link. They also have a nice web site in

Swedish.

" hi! "

" my name is veronica and i live in sweden. in december last yar our

first child was borned. he came out with bilateral clubfeet. we

already known about the clubfeet since the routine ultrasound in the

20th week of gestation. my husbands brother was also borned with

bilateral clubfeet almost 40 years ago. "

" wiggo, our son who is almost 3 months now, is treated with the

ponseti method. he got his first plaster when he was 26 hour old and

after that we replastered once a week. the right foot was easier to

manipulate than the left one. after six plasters/weeks wiggo had his

left achilles atendon cut off with a very good result. the heel

droped down to where it belongs nicely. "

" last week he got his dennis brown bar. and he likes them a lot. and

i like them too, it is great to have a child with bare legs *laugh* "

" i hope to learn a lot from you and looking forward to join this

group. "

hugs!
