Guest guest
Hello - I'm new here. My name is - my husband and I just saw in my 20 week ultrasound that our first will most likely be born a bilateral clubby in July. The level of severity is still unknown. At this point, I am trying to deal with the sadness and fear by keeping myself busy researching treatment etc. At first, even looking at photographs just made me cry and cry. I am very interested in both Ponseti and the French Method - can anyone point me in the direction of a good doc/physiotherapy program in or around Phoenix, AZ?? What has been your experience with insurance coverage for treatment? Thank you so much - I have learned a lot already from reading your posts and I admire the strength of each and every one of you. Guest guest
Hi I remember when my son was diagnosed at our ultrasound. I remember crying and crying in the parking lot. Now I look at my little boy and wonder why. I know a lot of people have probably said this to you already, but clubfoot really is TOTALLY managable. You WILL have to watch your baby spend a few months in casts and some boots and a bar (that is if you go with the Ponseti method.) But it is totally managable. I have just been typing out my son's clubfoot story in order to put together a scrapbook for him. As I tried to remember my first impressions of his clubfoot I realised that when Ben was born, I never once looked at his foot. I was just so pleased to see him. I knew it was clubbed, it looked turned, but it also looked like my newborn baby boys foot.....and it was ok. Today s foot is slightly smaller and chunkier than the other, and his calf muscle will always be a bit smaller, but he is happy, naughty, and totally mobile in a totally normal way. (see pics in file section under Ben H, these won't make you cry, I promise) So persevere, and prepare to answer a lot of questions, everyone is curious about a newborn with a legcast :') I can't help you with doc in Arizona, but go to Dr. Ponseti's website and have a look, the site is listed in the archives a billion times. Keep in touch and good luck Ruth Mum to born March 31, 2003 unilateral clubfoot, left > > Hello - I'm new here. Guest guest
Hi - I totally understand your feelings and was there myself when my son was born with a unilateral clubfoot. I had three ultrasounds and it was detected, so you are ahead of the game by knowing now. All I can say is that clubfoot is no big deal, if you are in the hands of the right doctor. By 6 weeks of age my son's foot was totally corrected by casting and a simple tenonomy (Ponseti Method). I assure you it is nothing to freak out about. My son will be 2 in a couple of weeks and you would have no clue he was born with a clubfoot. He has no scars and runs faster than any other child his age. He has an older brother without clubfeet and they did everything at exactly the same age. They both walked at 10 months, they both crawled out of their crib at 21 months and my cf child even did it with his brace on. What I'm trying to say is that it won't slow your child down at all and his feet after proper correction will look just like everyone elses. As far as insurance goes my insurance (Blue Cross HMO at the time) denied to reimburse me for my Ponseti doctor. However, after a simple letter of appeal they agreed to reimburse me. I think most of us who have appealed have won. If you need a letter I can share mine with you. I personally think the best doctor on the west coast is Dr. Colburn in Pleasanton (bay area), CA. How far would that be for you??? He has been practicing the Ponseti Method for 5 years now and has the same success rate as Ponseti because he doesn't try and change what already works. He consults with Ponseti regularly and Ponseti comes to his clinic when he is in CA to see his patients. Dr. Colburn treats you like an individual and not a number. He truly cares about these babies feet and has done it long enough that he is excellent at it. He is more than willing to consult free of charge by email or phone prior to your baby being born too. If you would like contact information let me know. Congrats on your baby to be! My aunt gave me the best advice when my son was born unexpected with clubfoot. She said thank god he was born healthy and with all his parts, all his foot needs is a little adjustment. It is so true it really just is an adjusment. > >Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot >To: >clubfoot_French_method (AT) e>,clubfoot >, foot > >Subject: Dr. referrals in sdale, AZ??? >Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 14:40:32 -0700 > > >Hello - I'm new here. Guest guest
, I especially like a statement made by Dr. Ponseti where he says, " Parents of infants born with clubfeet may be reassured that their baby, if otherwise normal, when treated by expert hands will have normal looking feet with normal function for all practical purposes. The well-treated clubfoot is no handicap and is fully compatible with a normal, active life. " http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/parents.htm l Please try not to worry so much. You now have the time to do research to be prepared which is what most of us did not have. There is not yet a doctor in Arizona listed on Dr. Ponseti's web site but it is possible that some there are starting to use his method. http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/physicians. html Here is a listing of the ped orthos in Arizona who are members of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. There will also be other doctors who are not members of that group who also treat clubfoot. Dr. Herbert J. Louis Phoenix USA Dr. Jack K. Mayfield Phoenix USA Dr. Milliner Phoenix USA Dr. L. Guest guest
Hello, We are in Tucson, AZ and see Dr. Valencia. He's a very kind, caring doctor who prescribes to the Ponseti method to some degree but does not seem to follow it to a tee. Having done a lot of research helps us to know what should be happening next in the process and advocate for that should he suggest otherwise. We are fully committed to following through with the Ponseti method as it should be carried out. I didn't know about Dr. so may call him to get a second opinion though Audrey is doing very well under Dr. Valencia's care to this point.
