Hi everyone, I am new to this board. This will be my first pregnancy after my

surgery which was May of 2002. I started out at 305. I'm now at 189 and holding.

I honestly haven't paid as close attention to my eatting habits as I should. I

don't gain...but I've stopped losing. I'm certainly not UNhappy where I am

though. But now, I've found out I'm pregnant and I could be with more than one.

Even up to three (which I doubt).

My husband and I started TTC when our 7 year old son was diagnosed with Leukemia

in Oct. of 2000. He went and had a vasectomy reversal. Six months later his

" promising " sperm counts dwindled to '0' and I thought our TTC journey was over.

I was devistated.

Then I saw a show on tv that said that some insurances cover Gastric Bypass

surgery. Turned out..mine was one of them! And after giong for my exams..I

qualified. My surgery was the WORST hospital experience I've ever had. Which

included an incompitent (or uncaring) nursing staff that wouldn't listen to my

cries for help as they gave me anti-nausia (sp) meds and I would go into 8 hour

HORRIBLE panic attacks. I did this for FOUR days while there. ANYWAY....

After surgery and losing the weight we looked into doing IVF

(invitro-fertilization). My insurance covered about half of the costs PLUS all

my meds. But my first cycle was disappointing! Long story short..I only had ONE

embryo to transfer and it wasn't of the greatest quality. I conceived...but lost

it very early. My second cycle went MUCH better. We retrieved 10 eggs. 8 of them

fertilized normally (by using dh's sperm which was aspirated by needle of the

testies..PESA) and we went on to transfer three very good embies. We also have

four on ice just in case.

I went to my first beta this morning (after getting a positive HPT) and sure

enough, I'm pregnant. The question will be...with how many? I have THREE

embryo's on board. Or I did. I'm not sure how many took. Our first ultrasound

will be Nov. 19th. This will tell us how many babies are in there. BUT...it's

the DAY before my insurance expires. My dh quit his job two weeks ago..and our

insurance will lapse on Nov. 20th. It was a job that was causing him to be VERY

unhappy at work and home...due to a virbally abusive boss. I didn't blame him

for quiting, but now I have to figure out what to do about maternity care. I

really want to see a high-risk specialist. And if I find out there's more than

one in there...I will HAVE to see one. This will include a nutritionist.

So..as I introduce myself to you all and now I can read your messages and feel

part of them (I have had these sent to my email since my surgery in 2002...) I'd

like to say hi to you all and I can't wait to be a part of this group.

I have another beta on Thursday to make sure the numbers are rising. I'm doing

progesterone shots each night to maintain my uterine lining. Will have to

continue this until the end of my first trimester. I'm just fine with that. I'm

more worried about what I can eat..and what I CAN'T! So if you guys have any

words of wisdom to me, from nutrition to anything else I must know...PLEASE feel

free to indulge me as much as you want.

Here's a bit about me AFTER surgery. I don't gain much of anything. But I am not

losing anymore either. My own fault. I can eat just about anything to a point. I

can pick up one of my sons halloween candies and eat a miniture 3 muskateers

bar..and my only effect is feeling tired afterwards. I don't do this often, but

I wish I couldn't do it at all LOL. I also can eat MANY regular food items. I

can go out with family and eat hot wings. I can eat french fries. i don't

gain..but I know it's not helping me to start losing again anymore either. I'm

not worried about losing at all now that I'm pregnant. I am not much worried

about gaining. What I'm VERY worried about is giving this baby OR BABIES

noutrients to have them grow strong and healthy. And I don't know how to go

about that.

I can't drink Milk. At all. Well, I can eat a bowl of cereal with some 2 % milk

on it (skim does the same thing to me) and I will feel both nautious and TIRED

afterwards. So I don't tend to do that very often. How will I get in enough

calcium to give this baby(s) what it needs. Also, I don't near enough protein

even for myself. How do I do this with a baby on the way or worse...more than

one baby on the way???

Also, I have no idea what to expect to feel with this pregnancy as compaired to

my PRE-surgery babies. I have three boys..all delivered vaginally. Cory (age 11,

first born...10 1/2 hour labor and delivery), (age 7, induced with

pitocin...7 1/2 hour delivery) and n (age 5, induced with prostiglandin

gel...2x's..7 1/2 hour labor and delivery). With my first born I weighed in at

160 lbs when I got pregnant with him. And 200 when I gave birth. I hope to not

gain much. But enough to gain what is needed. But my baby(s) will come first!

Thanks for your time....

Looking forward to the knowledge I KNOW I'll gain through you ladies!

Welcome Sydney,

You have so many questions in your post, I am sure some of the other

ladies will cover some of the other things you are asking. I just

wanted to say something about insurance. You said your husband is

quitting his job, and you will lose your insurance on Nov. 20th.

I just wanted you to know that according to a federal law called

HIPAA, your husband's employer will have to offer you continued

insurance coverage called COBRA. That means, if you want to continue

getting insurance coverage on your whole family, or just on yourself

alone, you can do it. It will be very expensive, since you pay the

full price without any contribution from the employer, but it may be

well worth it with all the maternity expenses and financial risks

that go along with that. It will also ensure that you have

continuous coverage so when your husband does get a new job, they

won't be able to exclude your " pre-existing conditions " .

If there is no way you can afford to pay for COBRA, then look into

getting Medicaid. Most states have some kind of medicaid coverage

for those who can't afford private insurance, and the qualifications

are not as strict as you might think, especially with a family size

of 6 (or 7 or 8!).

I hope this helps a little. Good luck in your pregnancy, however

many there may be in there.

Hello Sydney and Welcome!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I'm excited for you and the prospects

of you having multiples. My dear friend did IVF in 2001, they

transferred 3 embryo's and one took. But you have a good chance of

more than one. I hope all goes well for you! As far as your

insurance, can't you pay into a COBRA and keep your current

insurance? I definately would not want to go without, especially if

you're pregnant.

Now as far as nutrition and vitamins. I, too, have been worried

that I won't be able to consume enough nutrients, but after

listening to and a few others, I know that I will! I'll tell

you what my dietician told me about me being pregnant (with a

singleton) Calories 1800-2000/day. Fat 55 grams/day, Protein 75

grams/day, water, Prenatals and Calcium supplements. I take a

Chewable Prenate in the am and a Woman's One a day at night. I take

over 2000mg of Calcium Citrate as well. I also will continue with

my monthly B-12 shots. I guess just trying to eat as healthy as

possible, well rounded, added more fruits, veggies, an extra yogurt

and protein shake. This baby will take from me before anything

else. I have to keep me healthy and strong, so baby can do the same.

I hope this helps! Again Congrats on your pregnancy! We're

pregnancy Sisters!

Hubby changed jobs just to get us included insurance. *sigh*

A BIG STRESSOR relieved let me tell ya!

I wish you the best, but since you may have multiples and will need

extra care, I would consider doing anything and everything to have

converage. Medical care and expenses are astronomical!

Hi there,

I just wanted to say hello, from a fellow IVF-er and obesity surgery

person -- as well as a person who has twins :)!!

I went through IVF in Jan of 2002, got pg with twins and had them in

Sept. of 2002. I had my bariatric surgery (duodenal switch) just 3

months ago. I'll be doing a frozen embryo transfer in December of

next year. At that point, if I get pregnant, I'll have to worry about

multiples again as well.

Definitely look into the Cobra thing. It's expensive but very much

worth it in your situation.

How was your beta? Mine was very low, even with the twins. I was at

17 at 10 days past my 2 day transfer and 80 at 13dp2dt.

Do you ever go to a site called ivfconnections.com? It's a fantastic

site with wonderful ladies on it.

Best of luck to you!

HI Sherri, Thanks for the welcome...

First let me say congrats on your twins AND your surgery. I bet you are excited

to try conceiving again! I know it was a VERY emotional road to take...but so

worth it in the end. Not that I'm to the " end " yet...but it's been worth it so

far.

I wish we could pick up COBRA but we can't. Cobra is only offered to people who

worked at a company with 15 or more employees. This one that my husband worked

for..did not have that many! So unfortunitely we can't go that route.

We heard the news tonight that a little girl, with the same cancer our son has

just relapsed after being completely off treatment for 18 months. It SCARES the

HELL out of me because no insurance will touch if we lose what we have.

Hes way to high risk for them. He may NEVER get insurance coverage. Sometimes

there is a lifetime exclusion. I'm trying to come up with as much info as I can,

but it's just seeming helpless. My husband is DEAD SET not to go back to work

for my parents (whom he was employed before) but I am just thinking if he

doesn't, we lose this insurance and in the end might lose our house and anything

else we own...because if relapses (his treatment is over Dec. 11th)

after he's off chemo, we'll have bills that you can't even IMAGAINE. One 7 day

hospital stay for our son cost over $23,000. And he had about four or five of

those. And that doesn't include his weekly chemo treatments at the hospital as

an outpatient or the monthly visits he's now on.

Anyway...sorry to get sappy...the news of that little girl relapsing (she was

diagnosed at same age as our son...4) and is now the same age as him three years

later...7) just hit home hard and it makes reality set in...what are we going to

do if we DON'T keep this insurance.

I do go to IVF CONNECTIONS. I also do the message boards at iVillage (both

parent soup and parent place and here...

http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/245030

Hope it's ok to post links. Those are all IVF boards. And all TTC (trying to

conceive) boards. The one that seems to have the most knowledgable ladies about

IVF is the one I posted the link to. But I enjoy all the others as well. You can

see me on those...as " commitmeplz " . That's my screen name.

Well, just got home from work (6:00 am) and really need a couple hours of sleep

before getting up to get elementary kids to school. I have three boys...11, 7

and 5.

Hope we'll hear from each other again soon. Can't wait to hear how your journey

with TTC goes again!

Oh, and forgot to mention THANK YOU For the info on your beta. It has made me

feel MUCH better...mine was 36 10dp3dt and scared the HECK out of me. I just

thought it was so low. I go in tomorrow (thursday) for a repeat and then my

ultrasound is Nov. 19th!

Re: Introduction and chance of multiples

Sherri :)

19th!
