Guest guest
Amy, Do you know what stage he's in or if it is so large that it is nearly blocking his colon? Since it is near the rectum is it in the sigmoid colon? The constipation could be from the tumor, but most likely from the chemo. Ask his doctor is he could take a stool softner, or a laxative on a regular basis to help with this. Also ask him about something for the heartburn. How old is your Dad and what is his weight? Remember it is important that he maintain good nutrition because the chemo destroys a lot of good stuff along with the bad. Get him a good multiple vitamin with amino acids and fatty acids in it. And make sure he eats a lot of fish, meat, peanut butter, protein foods, etc... to keep up his blood counts. Hope this helps. > > My dad was just diagnosed with colon cancer. Guest guest
Amy, There are a few different schools of thought about what to eat if you have cancer. Generally though it seems there is a large consensus that keeping up ones nutrition is very important. So it follows that he should be eating lots of fruits and veggies, raw preferably. Some say to stay away from white table suger as cancer is a suger feeder and that kind of suger spikes your blood suger level too much and give the cancer a nice meal. Then there are those that believe meat is bad and you should get protein from nuts, grains and beans. It is bewildering but the bottom line is to make sure he is eating very healthily, and I myself believe suger is to be avoided at all costs. You can learn quite a bit more than this by doing research and getting a few cancer books sudh as " Beating Cancer with Nutrition " by Quillen. Guest guest
Thank you all for the responses. I've printed out all the info and things for him. I have such limited computer access lately that I'm not on as often as I would like to be. Dad has his good days and bad days. He does take a laxative, but he has to take so much to get any results he was looking for other alternatives. As for what stage he's in, I'm not entirely sure, but I seem to remember hearing something like Duke's C? But don't quote me on it. I'll ask him and let you know. The cancer has spread to his lymph node. His tumor is so large that it's mostly blocking his colon. They're hoping the chemo and radiation will shrink it so they won't have to remove any of his anal tissues. He just turned 62. Thank you all for the food info, I've also just began to dig through all the info in this group. Thanks for all your help.
Guest guest
After talking to my dad, he said it is a tubular adenoma and stage 3. He's been keeping with a healthy diet, my mom is doing weight watchers, and she's been giving him their recipes. Thanks Amy
Guest guest
Just heard about this support group and diet...haven't started yet but am interested about it because I suffer from bloating and gas pains...IBS runs in the family as well. Have been tested from doctor but says I don't have celiac. LOVE eating carbs but they really affect my stomach, and I gain serious weight and bloating. Any tips on getting started? Guest guest
Do you have the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle yet? http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_0_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=\ breaking+the+vicious+cycle&sprefix=breaking+the There are also some cookbooks that are SCD compliant listed on that page. Have you studied the SCD BTVC website, looking over the lists of legal and not legal foods - familiarization with this will greatly help you at the beginning of your diet. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_a-c.htm Also, look at pecanbread.com for help with general beginning info, as well as the stages approach to implementing the beginning diet. In general there is tons of useful info here: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html and http://www.pecanbread.com/new/begindiet1soup.html but all the top menu selections are helpful. Good luck on your intro to SCD. Guest guest
Welcome Lori! You'll find many of us are in the throws or rehabilitated carb addicts. Been thinking about this lately.. Like who wouldn't want to eat carbs and just be healthy? I know I would it's just for many of us that sentence doesn't work- the two are just total diametric opposites carbs/healthy. Remember in the SCD we deal with SPECIFIC carbs.. this isn't a carb free diet Like Mara said you should get yourself a copy of the book. It is super enlightening and Elain G did a fabulous job writing just the bare bones in lamens terms so we can get started on our way. Ask many questions here.. I am sure there will be someone to answer and clarify things for you! Jodi
