Hello!

I have a couple questions. I'm in the very early stages of my

pregnancy (approx 4-5 weeks) and have this horrible cold. My dr.

told me to take Robitussin DM. Now anything I've ever heard stated

that you really aren't supposed to use anything not even cough

drops. Is this ok, or is my dr. a quack? Also; does anyone know if I

can use any cough drops and which one's. My throught is so itchy and

sore. I have another question. I am currently at about 1100-1200

calories (14 months post-op, down 125 pounds) should I up my caloric

intake? and how much should I be eating? I'm trying desperately to

be good. Since i'm kinda sick to my stomach most of the day it's not

hard to do but, as a matter of fact I have to force myself to eat.

But I know that once this stage is over I will have to watch

everything I eat. I've asked the OB this question and she said that

when I come in for my first check up (in 2 weeks) we could discuss

it then, I would like some info now. Any advice would be greatly

appreciated.

Thank you;

Irene

If your doctor told you to take it, then it is fine. Just FYI, you can

take benedryl, cough drops, Tylenol etc. There are a whole world of

medications that will not cross the placenta. Just make sure to ask

your doc each time. Focus on eating what you can. Nibble of crackers

for nausea and try to get in your protein. When you have your first

appointment, you can go over your diet more in depth with your doctor.

I always try to avoid any kind of medications during pregnancy,

especially during the first trimester. But, I think cough drops

would be fine. I also used some of that vapor bath stuff when I had

a bad cold during pregnancy. It is made for babies, but it works

great for mommies too! I just added a couple cap fulls to a warm

bath, and soaked a while to open up my sinuses and soothe my throat.

Good Luck!
