IBD and Kefir

I was wondering how many IBD'ers (I have Crohn's) have had success with Kefir?

Also, was it a difficult process intro'ing Kefir?

This past weekend I spent in the ER due to a bad batch of yogurt. Since I am

still in the throws of being post bowel surgery my surgeon is ultimately in

charge of my case. None of the docs except a young resident thought there was a

connection to the yogurt.

No one really knows what happened to me. It was awful none of the less

especially considering I have been feeling very good bowel wise lately.

This has reaffirmed some of my worries about how powerful probiotics are. I

only truly experience more of a sense of well being when I have added probiotics

in my diet especially from Food sources like SCD yogurt and saurkraut/fermented

veggies.

Any experience greatly appreciated!

I was a little confused by your explanation. It was bad yogurt

because you put too much probiotic powder into it before

it began fermenting?

Yet you've been eating yogurt all along?

There's a limit to how much bacteria

can grow, in any case, since the lactose in the milk

is limited, and after that, it can't support any more

bacteria population growth, er, for lack of a better

term. So it's hard to know why that would cause that

level of nausea.

Did you eat anything else that might have

caused it?

Yes.

No this was a new batch- I always use the same amount of culture.

This has happened to me in the past when I used too little culture or when my

actual yogurt went bad- it's just the severity even once causing a mini bowel

obstruction was never this bad. Could be because I am still healing post

surgically that my reaction was so violent.

My docs do not think I got food poisoning they think it is just a fluke and will

treat it as such unless it happens again.

I had some salmon puree that I made the day before that I ate. Seemed to be ok.

I am very sensitive to yogurt and probiotics it has been one of my biggest

challenges on the SCD finding that balance of intro and how much I can use. It

is always this crazy thing that can make me violently ill and yet cause serious

destruction like causing me to end up in the hospital. LDN mitigated this

response a couple of times so I believe it has something to do with my immune

system.

I just don't know what else did this. I got a belly ache about an hour after

eating the yogurt.

Kefir is very advanced.  I tried it but couldn't get passed the taste--like buttermilk.  Didn't bother me but have to be very careful with what you tolerate because it could have easily gone the other way.

Kefir is like drinkable yogurt but tastes like thick buttermilk with medicine--not sure on the exact difference besides more probiotic strains I think.

I love the taste of kefir! I tried it before going into scd, and it seemed very

effective/powerful!

Then I discovered scd, and I stopped kefir. I don't miss it so much, because scd

yogourt is also very satisfying.

I don't know the details about kefir.

Is it legal?

Should it be home fermented?

Kefir has different strains of bacteria then yogurt. Elaine said that kefir was advanced for that reason. You also have to ferment an extra day then normal to use up the lactose in the milk. On Dom's site he has instructions for scd, I think Seth does also. Katy
