I am 5' 4 " . I started SCD at 126 which was a good weight for me. Initially, I

lost weight on the diet, but after 6 months, I was back up to 126 where I stayed

until the beginning of this year. I don't know what the problem is, but I'm

gaining weight to the tune of about a pound or so a month. I'm currently

weighing in at 134. My clothes are getting tight and there's a bunch of stuff in

my closet I can't even wear. I've almost cut honey out. Pretty much cut fruit

out. Eat nuts very sparingly. I'm scared the weight gain means I'm not absorbing

food correctly and my body is storing all the food I do eat as fat because it

thinks it's starving. Actually, the weight gain kinda corresponds with my C

coming back. I just don't know what's going on. I can't afford new clothes but I

can't loose the weight either. I just want to get back to the size I was before

Christmas so I can fit back in my clothes. I have started working out but it's

not consistent. I didn't realize how hard it would be to get to the gym during

the summer.

Sorry to complain so much.

Hi Misty,

You don't have to go to the gym to lose weight... Go for nice walks, go biking,

hiking, swimming... There are so many activities you can do during the summer

to make you feel good!

Also, if you can find Celtic Sea Salt and use that instead of any other kind of

salt, it will help with your C. problems. It helps me alot.

Hi Misty,

I am 5'3" and now I am up to 135- so I have the same issues as you ( I used to be 125 and now can't fit my clothes!!!)

I read that any activity is good but the rule is to do it every day (walking, biking and etc., at least 3 miles, taking a class in the gym) and then you will see the change!! Just try to be consistent. I know it is very hard and you want to do other things in the summer. I feel the same way but then I think about what is cheaper: replacing all clothes and be less stronger or losing extra to be healthy and to look better in the clothes that you already have?

Did you notice anything you were eating or eating more of when you started to

gain?

That makes perfect sense and makes me feel a lot better. It's good to know

there are other reformed bread maniacs out there. But I can see how too much

toffee nut crunch, etc. might be a problem! :) But I have noticed on SCD I don't

have the horrible cravings I used to have.

I think mine might just be because I'm flared, or cuz of the prednisone, or maybe because I'm on intro (sorta) right now. I've been craving things (very illegal things) terribly lately though. Part of the problem is that every time you -- inadvertently or not --

slide off the fanatical adherence band wagon, you feed the bad

bacteria.

They know " their " food is out there. You told them it

was.

So they want it. And they'll bug you until you starve them out... or give

in and feed them, and perpetuate the Vicious Cycle.

My husband Fred would LOVE to gain about 25-30 pounds.He's lost that

much twice this year, and cannot afford to lose any more. He was able to

regain the weight once, with help from a 1250 calorie nutrients bag,

started simultaneous to beginning the SCD, which we did in the

HOSPITAL, beginning 04/21/09. (You can imagine the challenges with

THAT!) He was on the bag for 7 weeks, and as soon as he was off it in

June, he promptly lost 25 pounds.

He initially felt better on SCD, especially with help of nutrients bag

and weight gain, but now he's back to looking gaunt and not feeling so

well. Also has primary sclerosing cholangitis, a very rare autoimmune

liver disease that actually caused his UC (the two often go hand in

hand). He is not having any current issues with his liver - thank God! -

but after his 4th Remicade double-dose infusion June 30th, he had an

allergic reaction, was given more Benadryl and 100 mg. shot of

hydrocortisone, and within hours went into a severely and scarily

depressive state. Be forewarned: If you have a mood disorder to begin

with, hydrocortisone can just about finish you off. He's now on two

antidepressants, Effexor and Remeron, and doing much better in the mood

department. (The shrink said: " Remove all weapons from your home!) He

also has a history of developing pancreatitis when his UC flares REALLY

badly, so we're always on the alert for that. I keep telling him he

needs to take digestive enzymes with his meals, but he tells me he takes

" so many pills already. " Gonna keep fighting that battle.

Still on SCD, but cannot eat much in the way of high fat content SCD

foods, as they cause him nausea and more diarrhea. However, he does do

well with the lemon souffle recipe in Elaine's book. Anything with more

than 1/2 cup nuts in the recipe is off limits!He's also telling me that

meat appears to cause him a little queasiness. We're also going to

switch to goats milk yogurt. Not sure if cow's milk yogurt is an issue

or not.

And by the way, we're done with the Remicade. His new IBD doctor, the

best in Atlanta, said " no more. " He's probably built up antibodies, and

the effect was minimal anyway. For $15,000 you'd expect a little better

punch! Would love to get him on LDN, but he'd need to wait 6 more weeks

til the Remicade is out of his system. Also, our new and improved gastro

won't prescribe it. So we'll be calling one of the recommended LDN

doctors.

I think Fred is a little more complicated than your usual SCDer, yes? :)

Whew! I know you're all tired just from reading this. Will try to keep

it lighter next time!

We're here to help.

First of all, have you been keeping a food diary of what he eats, when,

and how much? If not, start. If you have, trot out to FitDay.Com and get

a free account and start adding up how much he's actually eating in a

day.

Remember that a man requires at least 15 calories per pound of ideal

weight just to maintain the body... that's without including any

exercise, or shopping for food, or food prep, or whatever. (Ladies, a

woman needs 11 calories a day per pound of ideal weight. It's unfair for

those women who need to lose...)

To gain one pound per week, Fred needs to consume 3500 calories more each

week than he expends in all his running around, work, other activities,

etc. If he isn't doing that, he isn't going to gain -- and, as I have

noted with my weight-loss issues, if there's inflammation, I won't lose.

I think it's reasonable that while your husband's body is fighting the

disease, he will be slower to gain weight than a normal person would

be.

Nope, I acutally eat less now than I did 6 months ago. I did go through a honey

phase and a nut butter phase, but I was eating that stuff before when I was 126.

I stayed intro for 2 weeks a couple months ago and gained a pound or two during

that 2 weeks. I was only eating chicken soup, jello, eggs and a little cheese. I

dunno what's up????

We're here to help. First of all, have you been keeping a food diary of

what he eats, when, and how much? If not, start. If you have, trot out

to FitDay.Com and get a free account and start adding up how much he's

actually eating in a day.

Thanks for the info Marilyn. Had to laugh at your "Fred needs to

Fred doesn't work; he's retired from the IRS (6 years now), and if he

wasn't, he'd be on disability as he's been way too fatigued to work for

the last several years. He rarely leaves the house due to his UC

issues, and is quite inactive. Just major high metabolism I guess.

(Doncha just hate that in a guy?) No, he's not been keeping food diary

per se, but he has been keeping a poop diary (ever notice how close

"diary" and "diarrhea" sound? Coincidence? I don't think so!) But

maybe now that his mood is more stable, I'll suggest the food diary.

= minimum amount of calories per day.

Then add at least 500 calories per day extra if you want him to gain a

pound a week, and 1000 calories a day extra to gain two pounds a

week.

On a billboard the other day, I saw the word "lacoste" (not sure what that is) and immediately thought "oh my goodness, lactose! Why are they advertising lactose??" Lacoste is a French designer label most famous for polo shirts with an alligator

(or crocodile ) logo. Quite nice but you pay a lot for that critter on a polo

shirt.

You sound like you are doing much better and you will get there. I am also

looking at some great recipes with foods I'm not ready for yet.. still at about

stage 2-3 but getting there, slow and steady :)

intro can do that - I want everything right now and will have a tough time
