We received a bottle of Dutch Gin (Genever) as a gift.

It was given to me as it is a great digestive aid- elders drink it in The

Netherlands for the health properties.. They thought it would do me good.

I actually bought 3 bottles of this stuff (in the original clay bottles) when I

was in Holland years ago.

On the legal/illegal list it says Gin is occasional. What does occasional mean?

I don't really drink- but sometimes it would be nice after a meal or like some

fatty meat or something.

It would be nice to break open this bottle when I am ready to drink a bit and

try some post surgery. I haven't been able to tolerate alcohol in like forever.

I used to be a wine enthusiast. Argh.

Hi Jodi,

My 89 year old grandfather likes his Bombay Sapphire Gin –

he’ll make a drink, take a sip, smack his lips and say, “Ahhhhh,

mother’s milk!”

I don’t have the heart to tell him I’m lactose

intolerant.

Hi Jodi -

I would be very cautious about this. I used to work for a company that had an

office in Belgium and genever was a big favorite when we visited. From my

experience, genever is usually flavored (apple, pear, etc.) - and you know what

that means. I'm not sure if there is a " plain " version, but I would do some

extensive research before trying it.

With regard to alcohol in general, I've consumed both hard alcohol and wine from

my very first days on SCD, usually several times a week, and unless I really

overindulge (to where I feel bad like a hangover the next day), I haven't

noticed that it bothers my gut. But given your history, I agree with Mara, that

I would take it slow and see how you react.

Hey Kathy,

Thanks for the warning.. This Genever is plain.

But I will totally pay attention!

I love some wine with dinner but when my upper GI issues got bad I had to cut it

out. I had a sip of alcohol the other night and it was ok but I still feel I am

not ready...
