Ok, so I'm in the process of appealing UHC. I have a silly question. Is a DOC band considered a Brace? I read somewhere that according to the FDA, a DOC band is considered a class II neurology device. Or am I having wishful thinking and they are considered a brace.

I'm trying to get around my so called policy exclusion. "Braces that straighten or change the shape of a body part are orthotic devices and are excluded from coverage."

Thanks for your help ladies

According to my policy with UHC, it is considered an orthotic that is used to change or reshape a body part. I thought it could be considered durable medical equipment, but it is not. Should we move forward with banding, we will pay out of pocket and file a claim. Once denied, I will appeal, but do not have my hopes up of any reimbursement and am not letting this be a deciding factor for us in banding or not banding. I will let you know if I find out anything else from insurance or have any luck.
