, THANK YOU for being so willing to share it with us! I cannot know

the pain you must feel right now, but actually feel selfish in being comforted

by your ability to see a silver lining in your tragedy. Please know that you

and your family are in my thoughts and prayers and that we are all here for

support as you may need.

God bless you all!

We've lost our baby but have gained an angel ...

This is the hardest email I have ever had to write so please bear

with me at this most difficult time.

On Wednesday July 16, 2003 we had an amniocentesis done as I am 40

year old first time pregnant mom. I was 19 weeks at the time of the

amnio and all previous ultrasounds had been fine. I felt great

through out my pregnancy, no morning sickness but occassional light

spotting. We were told we were having a baby girl and we were so

elated to hear that :) I went home and rested for two days as the

doctor told me to do , then on Friday I went back to work in the

NICU, by 5pm that night I had a little tightness in my abdoment and I

noticed a small amount of blood tinged mucous upon wiping after

urinating. I called my doctor and went in for a ultrasound and

doppler. We heard the heartrate and saw my baby girl swimming around

and sucking on her thumb. My doctor told me to go home and go to bed

and rest, when I got home I undressed and was about to get into the

shower when I felt a small sac of fluid that was still intact

protruding through my vagina. With this we called the doctor and got

into trendlenberg position (legs up in the air ) for two hours before

driving to the hospital. When we arrived to the hospital the sac had

moved within and the perinatologist did a sterile speculum exam and

viewed what she thought was 5-6 dilation of my cervix. Upon

ultrasound I was only dilated 1 cm with 5-6 being the bag that had

protruded through the cervix. My options were to induce the labor

and deliver my baby which would not survive at that point outside of

my womb, or I had less than a 50 percent chance that with the

treatment of ampicillin and zithromax , and indocin the bag would

reduce in size and possibly I could have a rescue cerclage

performed. They would attempt to sew my cervix closed if they could

get the bag to reduce. I opted for the chance and was in

trendlenberg position for the next 2 days. It was extremely

uncomfortable as my bladder got distended as well as my bowels backed

up. I required being catherized and suppositories to move my

bowels. Unfortunately after this was done , the intense pain was

relieved but my bag of water ruptured within 30 minutes, which I

suppose was being supported by the enlarged bladder and intestines.

The next morning after many tears I was induced with cytotec a

cervix ripening agent every 6 hours , after a couple of doses I began

labor. I delivered my daughter on July 21,2003 at 6:15 pm , she had

no heartrate upon delivery which was a comfort to me knowing she did

not suffer. She weighed 276 grams which is 9.7 ounces. She was 10

inches long.

My perinatologist believes that I may have an incompetent cervix

and possibly the amniocentesis aggravated the situation. She

encourages us to try again after a couple of cycles and an early

intervention cerclage could be performed , and no amniocentesis would

be encouraged. The amnio results are still pending but overall my

baby looked perfect , just too early was her arrival.

I am extremely anemic at this point my hemoglobin is only 8 down

from 11. I am on ferrous gluconate 3 times a day and I just asked

for a prescription for ferrous fumerate 2 times a day , so hopefully

my iron level will increase, if not they may have to give me iron

injections. My blood pressure was 80's over 40's so they were a bit

concerned as well.

One thing that I know is that even though my family has suffered

a great tragedy in our life, I do feel that God has given me a gift

to give back to others , now when I have to be there for that mom who

has just delivered a severely premature infant that will not survive

or has already gone to heaven I will be able to offer her true

compassion and sympathy as I now KNOW how she may be feeling at that

time. I have always been the nurse in the unit to work with the long

term patients who were dying and I would often pray that I could

truly understand what they were going through to be able to offer

them as much comfort as I could during this most difficult moment in

their life ... and my prayers were answered and now I know . Through

the experience with my lil angel I will be able to once again help

others make this transition.

Thank you for allowing me the time to express myself and for all your

support that you have given me so freely.
