Guest guest
Our sons best nights are clearly those in which he has had an epsom salt bath. I let him soak for about half an hour. I use Baby Magic Bath to make bubbles also and it does not interfere. My doctor highly reccommended doing epsom salt baths and it does have a overall calming effect on him. Guest guest
Exactly what effect does an Epson Salt bath give and what is it's purpose? If I remember correctly it is a great way for their bodies to absorb magnesium, is this true? Any other info would be great as well. Thanx. Guest guest
We've found nothing but good for Gillian (2.4) with the epsom salt baths. 1 cup, half hour soak and play, then shampoo and soap. Do note that epsom salts are a laxitive if ingested (i wouldn't reccommend them). Gillian has hard, difficult stools. She also has lots of sensory issues like needing lots of oral stim. so when she's in the bath she is always sucking her fingers, toys, etc. Last night, you guessed it...the warm water, the epsom salts, some nystatin and waalaa! The biggest pooper to date!! Ha! Ha! Ya know you're an asd mom when you are soooooo excited about poop!! And then shared it around the world, literally. What is the pepcid ac supposed to do? in Chicago Epson Salts >I am getting ready to start Epson salts with Philip and was wondering if it >has any bad effects. Guest guest
I noticed something similar when I used the recipe posted for Epson salt cream. I apparently made the mistake of also putting some on Evan's hands because he certainly was NOT constipated the next day. Sure paid closer attention to what I was doing the next time. ;-) Betty from Central Cal. ----- Original Message ----- .......... .. Guest guest
The epsom salt baths seem to have a laxative effect for my son and I'm pretty sure he's not in ingesting them. Perhaps even abosrbing them through the skin can have this effect because it seems to work for him! ( & Malachi's mom)

Guest guest
Some parents have reported hyperactivity or restlessness with Epsom salt baths. We see the opposite calming effect with better sleep. Your best bet is to start with only 1/2 Cup per bath and watch for any negative reactions. If all seems well, work up to 2 cups per tub (water about up to belly button.) Good Luck!

Guest guest
Actually, I thought there was some question as to whether the Mg could be absorbed through the skin in significant quantities. I'm not sure about that. Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulfate and the Sulfates can be absorbed easily. Sulfates are needed for the Phenol Sulfate Transferase (PST) system to function effectively. Most people recycle the sulfates in their body, but some (many?) ASD kids excrete the sulfate in their urine instead. Therefore they need constant replenishment. Sulfates can't be absorbed by eating them. Our bodies make them from sulfur in the foods we eat, so supplementing with sulfur might help, or eating high sulfur foods like eggs, although there is some question as to whether all ASD kids can metabolize the sulfur to sulfate. Anyway, the build up of phenolic compounds in the body often causes hyperactivity, hence the Feingold diet. Epsom salt baths replenish the sulfate allowing the PST system to eliminate the phenols and hopefully producing a calmer child who actually sleeps through the night. If the Mg is absorbed, it would have a similar calming effect, so the baths are a good thing all around. Dr. Sidney Baker, who co-authored the DAN! protocol, highly recommends them. And they definitely work for us!
Guest guest
My DD sleeps through the night. I'm wondering if the Epsom Salts bath will help with hyperactivity that occurs during the day. Any thoughts? Cari PS She definitely reacts to red grapes. We are in the process of testing tomatoes and oranges.
Guest guest
Thank you very much. That was more than I expected but definitely great to finally understand.
