Remember too, if someone hasn't already mentioned it, that many vitamins are

fat-solubable, meaning they need fat to be used by the body. It doesn't have

to be a lot of fat. No need to eat a pat of butter ;)

- you are right about the medications - I take Synthoid for my thyroid.

It has to be taken on an empty stomach to be properly absorbed. My iron

supplement is taken later in the day when it has been 3 hours from the last time

I ate. For me, I have to have something on my stomach when I take my vitamin

or I will get sick. I have tried various brands (nothing really costly) before

I realized it wasn't the vitamin but me.

Note to everyone - if you have been taking your thyroid medication a certain

way - with food/etc. and your doctor has set your amount by this habit, don't

change without letting him know.

Happy New Year everyone - hope everyone has a healthier and happier year than

the last!

This is the case with several meds. For example, my blood pressure med and

" water pill " (diuretic) both require taking on an empty stomach. On the

other hand, my beta blocker (coreg) is taken with a meal. With vitamins, if

you take a multivitamin is generally best to have a little food on the

stomach BUT, if you take separate vitamins it's a whole other deal. :) For

example, vitamin C is water soluble whereas calcium needs to be taken with a

bit of fat as it is fat soluble.

Of course, the best thing to do is to spread meds and supplements throughout

the course of the day and to research each to ensure you take them properly.

For those who utilize supplements and homeopathic remedies, it's also very

important to watch out for interactions between these solutions as well as

with pharmaceuticals.
