Guest guest
How long did you have the problem with diarrhea? And, after starting SCD, how long did it take for your problem to clear up? I'm new. I'm not sure what my " problem(s) " is/are, but I think it's candida with gluten intolerance. No insurance to get it verified and I've only recently begun the search for healing. I'm on day 5 of the intro for the SCD... man, it's difficult. I guess I'm looking for some hopeful signs. I have only had one solid stool since I started this intro portion. Today has been the best since then (I think that was on day 2), with diarrhea only in the morning. Thank you for responding!
Guest guest
Hi there, and welcome. I had chronic diarrhea for about 12 years. In the year before I found SCD, I could barely leave the house. When I drove 4 miles from my house to my best friend's house, I had to stop at a bathroom a minimum of 2 times. My career went almost totally away. I had to stop teaching seminars because I couldn't stay out of the bathroom. I sometimes didn't make it from my desk to my bathroom -- about 10 feet. I've been to many doctors, both on the allopathic and on the holistic side. No one has diagnosed me with any specific condition. I've used IBS on the insurance forms, because they didn't have a code for chronic diarrhea. I don't test positive for celiac disease or any grain allergies. Yet when I eat wheat, rice, corn, potato, I am confined to the bathroom for hours or sometimes even days. When I first started the SCD, my symptoms got worse. I thought I was going to dissolve into eternal poop. It took about 6 weeks before I noticed a major positive shift. I tried to quit more than once. Thanks to this list's support I was able to persevere. Now, 9 month later, I still have a bout of diarrhea about once a month or so, usually when I think I'm smarter than all the experts on this list and eat something stupid. Or when I'm stressed. I'm teaching seminars again. I'm meeting with clients again. I have a life again. Would you believe ... last month I drove all the way to Seattle (196 miles) without having to stop one time! Hang in there. The beginning it tough. The end result is amazing. Hannah At 04:20 PM 5/22/2009, you wrote: How long did you have the problem with diarrhea? Guest guest
Hi Hannah, Thanks for posting this. I have a question for you. You mentioned that you have D about once a month. Are you BM's formed and solid the rest of the time? I'm trying to understand how people measure their progress. Thanks, Now, 9 month > later, I still have a bout of diarrhea about once a month or so, > usually when I think I'm smarter than all the experts on this list > and eat something stupid. Guest guest
, BMs are formed and solid. I had to get used to that. At first, I kept thinking I need to do a bowel cleanse. I wasn't used to only having BMs three or four or five times a day. 20 to 30 was more like it. I measure my progress this way: 1) BM's less frequently. Doing well. 2) BM's formed and solid. Doing well. 3) Less urgency. This one is much better but is the one issue I still struggle with. When I have to do, I have to go. Although alert time has gone from about 0.5 seconds to about 3 minutes. That's MAJOR progress, in my opinion. 4) Tolerate salads and raw fruits and vegetables. Raw vegetables and salads are still a trigger for me, although I've just recently gotten to the place where I can tolerate raw vegetable juices, also raw tomatoes and cucumbers. I can eat fruits without a problem now. 5) Tolerate eggs. I still can't eat eggs much. My egg sensitivity showed up during intro. For several months I couldn't look at an egg without running to the toilet. Now I can eat them once or twice times a week without a reaction. Overall, my digestion-related quality of life (using a 0 to 10 scale, 0 being bad and 10 being wonderful) has gone from about 1 to about 7. I'd like to be at 10. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hannah, Thank you for that info! It's really helpful and REALLY helps me see progress as I wasn't noticing before. Thank you so much for replying to this question. I've already felt so much support here and I'm so grateful. I was feeling really down and frustrated about doing SCD (it's been really difficult for me so far), but I'm feeling more hopeful as I hear from yall and read some of the older posts. THANK YOU! > > > >Hi Hannah, > >Thanks for posting this. > >I have a question for you. You mentioned that you have D about once > >a month. Are you BM's formed and solid the rest of the time? Something which I discovered, after Hurricane Katrina, when cooking time (because of on-off electricity for months) was at a premium, and I was eating a LOT of raw salads, since they didn't have to be cooked, was that taking some acidophilus at the same time as the salad improved my digestion of same. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
