Hello All,

My son has brachy and tomorrow we are going to Cranial technologies for

a second opinion. He has been in a Danmar helmet for 2 mos and I am

not sure if that is the right helmet for him. Anyways wish us luck, I

hope the snow that is predicted for tonight does not come.

Take care

My son just got his Danmar Helmet on Monday of this week. What do you

mean about it not working? My son has moderate plagio and sever

brachy. Did you get your Danmar Helmet from Michigan? Let me know how

the Cranial appointment goes.

Hi ,

I can't answer for 's specific case, but Danmar is a passive

helmet, meaning it relies on more growth than an active band. Active

bands include starband from orthomerica, DOCband from cranial

technologies, and Hanger band from Hanger. With an active band there

is slight pressure on the prominent areas and the band has to be

adjusted by carving out some of the foam to make room for growth every

few weeks (1, 2 or 3 depending on the provider and babies age).

with a passive band there is more room in the band so there is

generally more time between appointments, and the baby has to wear it

longer or grow more to correct the problem. people do have success

with passive helmets, but the general opinion is that they are better

for younger babies (who will have more growth).

I know this can be frustrating because if you're like me you didn't

know anything about this until you already had your band made. (we got

a starband that worked well). It may work well for your child, but you

might want to ask your ortho about this and see what they say - how

long will the baby wear it, what kind of results can you expect, have

they treated babies with similar proble and age as your son and what

were results....

take care.

Before we decided to get this helmet, I asked the Orthotist if the

Danmar Helmet is active or passive and she said it was active. Do

you remember where you first heard it was passive? I wonder how I

can get a straight answer since I have already asked and she told me

it was active!

Hello All,

We just returned from Cranial Technologies, and I was quite satisfied

with the care there. However I am still quite conflicted.

My son has plagio and severe brachy and has been in the Danmar helmet

for 2 mos. I received the helmet in Ohio close to where we live.I

understand the Danmar to be passive based on reading I have done on

this site and many others. I am not saying the Danmar does not work

I was just concerned that it may not be the best treatment for my

.I have seen some improvement in as far as the flatness of

his head but his head seems to be very wide and I have not seen much

improvement. I was also dissapoitned in the ortho where I received

the Danmar b/c no measurements were taken and the follow up apts were

up to me and not on any set schedule.

If you have any doubts about the current helmet, switch providers!!

I was not happy with my son's STARband from the beginning (it always

rotated to the right smushing his left ear - folding it in half at

night), but I kept trusting the ortho who said it was OK and I kept

telling myself that there was 'some' progress. Long story short, he

wore the ill fitting STARband for 5 months before I finally went to

DOCband for a second opinion. By then he had facial asymmetries

that were not present when he'd started the STARband. I don't know

for sure if it was the band or the untreated tort (the doctors kept

telling me it was nothing, but the DOCband therapist confirmed he

should be in PT). Either way, I WISH, WISH, WISH I'd gone for that

second opinion and switched providers after 2 months and not 5.

He's had his DOCband for 3 months now and is looking much better,

but will need another band for a total of 5 more months and will

probably still have the facial asymmetry. It just kills me because

if we'd switched when I first started having doubts he'd probably be

done by now. Just my 2 cents...

-Sheila,

Thanks for sharing. I think we will go with the DOC band. If it

were not for this site I would have never even known about Cranial

Tech. It is comforting to hear that other people have switched b/c

my dh was making me think I was crazy, but I knew in my heart this

Danmar was not the best for .

Thanks again.

My husband thought I was crazy too, but he knows I just want what's

best for , so he relented. And now he has to agree that his

head DOES look better. :)

I've heard it was passive on this forum, not from first hand

knowledge. We had a starband and an experienced ortho who was somewhat

dismissive of 'active' vs 'passive'. i guess one way to tell is how

often are your adjusments. if they are more than 3 or 4 weeks I would

say there is a lot of room in the band and it can't be that 'active'.

I think DOCbands tend to leave less room each adjustment and have you

come in more frequently (every week or two). starbands seem to leave

more time between adjustments and therefore leave more room for

growth. Our appointments were every 2 or 3 weeks, but it differs based

on the ortho.

If you find out more about this I would be interested, since my

reading here indicates that they are passive.

I do agree if a helemt is active or passive may have to do with how

often your adjustment our made. For the Danmar we were told to come

in if it appeared to be ill-fitting or we had any problems or

concerns. The ortho did not have us make regular appointments which

I was not real happy with. There is alot of room in his helmet for

growth so in 8 weeks we have only been in twice.

i was just going through this site http://www.danmarproducts.com/index.cfm?pageSRC=cranialShapingHelmets

this line made it sound like its passive

The helmet is generally worn both day and night, for an average period of four to six months. The baby is monitored for any signs of pressure areas and the helmet will be modified or replaced to accommodate growth as necessary.

but it never really says for sure

is there foam inside that they shave out when they do adjustments?

There is foam inside that they shave out when they do adjustments.

I have an appointment with the neurosurgeon tomorrow and then after

that I have an appointment with the orthotist so I will ask them

both about this (active vs. passive) again and let everyone know

what they say.

The brochure that the orthotist gave me regarding the Danmar Helmet

says the principles behind the helmet are:

- Provide total contact in the areas where growth is to be curbed

- Allow space in the areas where growth is needed

- The symmetrical helmet creates a means for growth to occur

Does this seem different that the DOC and STAR bands? If not, what

does the Danmar Helmet seem to be missing?

Thanks for your help!
