Guest guest
It is hard to say what exactly will work for you. The medical literature doesn't say too much about whether it is better to take Miralax daily or as needed. Since it is an osmotic laxative, it is probably better, certainly more effective, to take a small amount of Miralax daily, but how much the dose should be depends on how your body is behaving. I tend to take a full dose of Miralax once a day for several days after a constipation flare-up, then cut back a bit on my dose when things get moving again. Depending on what foods I'm trying or how my nervous system is behaving means I already have periods of worse constipation even though I'm taking Miralax daily. I periodically try stopping the Miralax, just in case I'm "better" only to suffer severe constipation and lots of discomfort and pain for several weeks until I can get re-balanced. So, for me, it has been best to take Miralax daily. I do adjust the dosage, though, depending on how loose my stools are or my level of constipation discomfort. For me, SCD has helped me get my symptoms under management, but it hasn't "cured" my upper GI dysfunctions or improved my motility issue. I wasn't expecting a cure and I'm thrilled to have achieved symptom management. (My gastroenterologist is amazed....) So I've come to accept that I need the help Miralax provides. My experiences with Amitiza and Zelnorm were good, but my body didn't tolerate the extremes these meds. caused. Miralax is better tolerated, that is for sure. And it doesn't impact what motility I do possess, unlike enemas or stimulant laxatives. And, unfortunately, my upper GI doesn't tolerate boosting serotonin either.... Kim M. SCD 5 years <<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hi Kim, I take miralax every 2 to 3 days. Sometimes I take a tbsp other times a cap full as recommended. I don't like the idea of depending on something... From what the doctors have told you and your research, is it better if I take say 1 tbsp every day? Thanks,GERDS and chronic C.SCD 13 months
